    • Let’s Get Real

      Posted at 5:28 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on December 15, 2022

It’s hard, sometimes, when nothing’s stopping you, to know what’s stopping you. ~Robert Brault, rbrault.blogspot.com

Are you stressed in your rush to meet a goal before the year ends? I haven’t decided if I am or not. Sure, I’m stressed, but it’s not the same stress I experienced the last two years of rushing to get books out before the year ended. It’s not stress of meeting any goals before this year ends. It isn’t illness, though I’ve had my share of doctor appointments in 2022.

      This Year it’s Personal Stress

My oldest son learned of a major eye condition. I came close to hopping on a jet bound for California. He’s going through treatment which includes shots in his eye. After the specified number of shots, they’ll determine if he needs more treatment.

A very ill close friend I’ve know for years is having a difficult time with her health and is losing everything she has including her cat because she can no longer care for herself. Giving up her cat at this stage isn’t good for her mental health. Of all times, she needs her cat. She’s devastated.

Another friend and I communicated with one of her family members, as we bounced ideas off of each other to find the best place for our friend to live. Her family member found a place two days ago. She’s moving in today. Through her illness, I’ve learned a lesson about doing a better job of caring for myself so this doesn’t happen to me.

Whoever this new me is, has had a lazy year. It isn’t like I haven’t been writing, but four partially written books later, not one of them is ready to publish. It’s no different with reading books with none finished. The year started out in a new apartment, so for the next ten months, I “waited” to see where I’d be at the end of the year and dreaded making a decision on moving or staying. It’s good to know this is no longer a stressor.

Back to the First Paragraph Above

Maybe I am in a rush to see a new year arrive, but can it change me back to me? Since COVID came to my state, I’ve lived as if I’m waiting for something. Know what I mean?

Next, it’s procrastination that has me stressed and the fact I can’t find a way to move on from it. Have you heard of Decision Fatigue? I think I’m experiencing this. Combining this with procrastination seems like a losing battle. Again, this has been common in people since COVID too.

One of my best friends is a psychologist. The other day on the way to the hospital to visit our ill friend, I asked her about Decision Fatigue. She wasn’t familiar with the term. As I described the definition, she said she wasn’t surprised that it exists and was familiar with the symptoms. Have you heard of it?

      Here’s some info:

“Decision fatigue is “the idea that after making many decisions, your ability to make more and more decisions over the course of a day becomes worse,” said Dr. MacLean, a psychiatrist. “The more decisions you have to make, the more fatigue you develop and the more difficult it can become.”

Lisa MacLean, MD via Sara Berg, MS
      Senior News Writer at AMA.

      Distraction

For the last half of this year, I’ve turned my TV on earlier and earlier in the day. To my credit, this doesn’t happen every day. This is odd for me, since I’ve never been a Daytime TV watcher since watching soap operas with my mom. It doesn’t help though I’m grateful – but my cable provider gives us the Premium Peacock streaming app as part of the package. Now, it has the Hallmark Channel on the app and free to me. Admittedly, it’s a nice distraction.

It took two years to make the decision on when and where to get my hair cut since my regular person retired. It’s been six months now since the haircut, and I’m procrastinating and questioning where to go this time. It’s a simple haircut! Ekk.

Here’s another article with a quiz:

“Decision fatigue is a new term based on studies finding that the more decisions we make, the worse our judgement gets as we become increasingly worn out from, yes, the very process of decision making.”

      Ellie Hughes via Women’s Health

The article in Women’s Heath was written in 2013, so I guess Decision Fatigue isn’t as new as I thought. I know I’m not the only one going through this. It’s too personal of a question for me to ask, but I wonder if any of you are experiencing anything similar. Maybe it is time to set goals for next year so this doesn’t happen in 2023. Then again, I’ll need to do more than look at a goal list.

Thanks for reading. Many of you are taking a blogging break for the holidays. Wishing all who celebrate a Happy Holiday season.

Don’t forget to take care of you, my friends.

    • August – Romance Awareness Month

      Posted at 3:44 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on August 6, 2022

Do you know August is Romance Awareness Month? Is it time to pay a little extra attention to the one you love? Why save your affection for Romance Awareness Month or Valentine’s day? Displaying romantic gestures can happen every day of the year. Am I right? Fold the laundry because I’ve had a hard day, or turn up the heat or toss a throw over me because I’m cold. Little things can say a lot. To me, these are romantic gestures. They don’t have to be huge.

Love notes and quotes warm my heart.

She lay in the darkness made bright by the filtering moonbeams, stretched her arms above her head, and gave herself up to dreams. She felt no shame, no regret, but a still ecstasy, a wild exultation because of her love. All life, all bliss, all beauty would be hers and his, because they had given their hearts to each other. ~Dorothy Scarborough, Impatient Griselda, 1927  [a little altered –tg]

      QuoteGarden Love Quotes

How do you get romantic with the one you love? Ooohhhh, wait. That’s kind of personal so just tell yourself.

Okay, okay, no more moaning and groaning now. Since it is Romance Awareness Month, and I’m an author of romance, I’m briefly covering the romance readers and writers side of romance. The majority of my followers aren’t romance writers or readers of the genre, so if that’s you choosing to read this, I hope I don’t bore you. I must be doing something else right to have y’all following me. Thanks!

The following romance reader stats are from *Romance Writers of America® (RWA)

      Who is the romance reader?

      • Female: 82%
      • Male: 18%
      • Average age of the romance reader: 35–39 years old
      • Ethnicity: 73% White/Caucasian, 12% Black/African American, 7% Latino/Hispanic, and 4% Asian/Asian American.
      • Sexual orientation: 86% heterosexual or straight; 9%  bisexual, pansexual, or other bi+ identity; 2% gay or lesbian.

Just an FYI. My newsletter demographics tell me many of my subscribers are close to my age. And heck, I read (and write) romance as a senior, so it’s good to know that I’m not alone.

Photo by Ylanite Koppens on Pexels.com

      RWA also says:

      The Basics

Romance fiction is smart, fresh and diverse. Whether you enjoy contemporary dialogue, historical settings, mystery, thrillers or any number of other themes, there’s a romance novel waiting for you! *Romance Writers of America® (RWA)

      RWA.Org

Writing romance might sound easy. Pick your characters, think up a story, find a setting, do some research, write it.

Whoa there, partner. Pull in the reins. Not so fast.

It’s not easy to write romance, but it’s a heck of a lot of fun to bring characters together and guide them to a happily-ever-after or happy-for-now ending. Don’t you dare forget the happily-ever-after or happy-for-now ending!

One thing I love about writing romance is the emotion, both in the story, settings, characters, and within myself. And the Happy Endings. Yes, I cry during writing. I figure if I don’t feel a deep emotion, you won’t, either. I’m proud to know I can write romance even though many snub their noses at me as if romance isn’t a real thing. In the past, I’d hold back saying what genre I wrote because I couldn’t stand seeing “ew” on their faces. Come on, it’s a billion-dollar business. (Not my business. Ha-ha.)

From Book Riot: It’s unquestionable that romance books sell. At $1.44 billion in sales per year, romance is the best-selling genre, nearly double the next highest genre of crime/mystery at $728.2 million. It’s even seen an increase in sales during the pandemic as more readers are looking for a guaranteed happily ever after.

      Gina Nicoll Oct 8, 2021

If you want to write romance, first you need to know what is necessary in the genre.

Once again, I’ll add another fact from Romance Writers of America:

      Definition

Two basic elements comprise every romance novel: a central love story and an emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending. Visit the link to read more statistics and facts. *Romance Writers of America® (RWA)

      Genres, Subgenres, and Tropes

By the way, in romance, there are many genres and subgenres. Fantasy, paranormal, sweet, young adult, new adult romance… The list goes on.

My genre is romance and subgenre is contemporary romance and contemporary western romance. Two books are also holiday romance. One of my favorite tropes to write is second chances. I also use the tropes: alpha-male, small town, and workplace romance/falling for the boss. I’ve used sports romance for my Bull Rider Series, but that keyword doesn’t work well for bull riding, or my bull riding books.

I don’t incorporate these tropes because they’re popular, but because they fit my stories. In fact, when I began writing these themes, I never heard of the word “trope” referring to books.

When I plan a book, I don’t look for a popular trope. Often, a certain trope becomes a trend. For me, I don’t write fast enough to get a book out because it’s the trend at the moment. It might not be by the time I finish a book. However, if I wrote faster, I would consider following trends.

Enemies to Lovers trope? Photo by Viktoria Slowikowska on Pexels.com

Examples of other tropes: When I typed “romance tropes” into Amazon search under Kindle Books, some books with these tropes came up. I knew some of them:

      • Enemies to Lovers
      • Secret billionaires
      • Marriage of convenience
      • Secret baby
      • Best friend’s siblings or friends to lovers
      • Workplace romance or falling for the boss
      • Rockstar
      • And more

Referring to the “second chance” trope… Most say second chance romance is a couple coming back together for a second chance after being apart. Jake and Beth in my book, Whispers of Forever: Mending Christmas, is a second chance romance. It isn’t my only book like this. Jake and Beth were high school sweethearts in love but torn apart. Thirteen long years later, they met again. Could this be their opportunity for a second chance (in their small town)? My series and standalones are set in small towns except for the Bull Rider Series.

Others say the second chance trope is couples finding love again as in losing a spouse or partner. This is the case in my book Seasoned with Destiny: A Gift of Love, where my widowed sixty some year-old ranch matriarch, and one of the two men vying for her hand fall in love—getting a second or another chance at love.

I’m curious. If you’re a romance reader or writer how do you see a “second chance” romance trope? I think readers who enjoy this trope will make their own decisions.

      • Do you see a second chance romance as a couple getting back together after a past relationship like Jake and Beth?
      • A couple finding love again with someone new like the widow and widowers in Seasoned with Destiny?
      • Or maybe you see it as both?

Does it matter? I lean toward getting back together after a relationship didn’t work the first time like Jake and Beth, but I’m not against reading and writing second chances in either scenario.

I could add more, but I’ll let you off the hook. Let me know if you come across anything that isn’t correct here. Until the next time… Take care and be safe.

      It’s time to get romantic!

You have the entire month of August.

      Hours fly,
      Flowers die:
      New days,
      New ways:
      Pass by!
      Love stays.
      ☙
      Time is
Too Slow for those who Wait,
Too Swift for those who Fear,
Too Long for those who Grieve,
      Too Short for those who Rejoice;
      But for those who Love,
      Time is not.

    • Day 31 Bloganuary The End

      Posted at 6:23 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 31, 2022

Oh, I love writing “The End” sometimes, but it’s bittersweet today. Time has flown by since I signed up for WordPress Bloganuary on January 15th and published my first post on January 16th. I’m glad I participated, even for only half of the month. For those of you who read the post I wrote after signing up, I’m proud to say that, yes, I did post my blog links on the #daily-prompt page for all to see.

I found it easy to fall into the routine of posting over fifteen days. With that said, since today is the end of the month, I’ll miss reading posts by other participants while I’m drinking coffee each morning. This brings us to the last January Bloganuary prompt:

How do you feel when you look at the stars?

Looking at the night sky has always been a favorite pastime of mine. Memories of sitting and watching the stars… Wait. “Watching the stars” sounds weird, but that’s exactly what we do, isn’t it? But yes, I have many memories of sitting outside at night taking in every bit of the sky.

Being at peace and feeling small in a big world is how I feel when looking at a star-studded sky, but I also feel lucky to know what a sky filled with stars looks like. If I ever lose my eyesight, I hope I can hold the sight in my memories.

I’m almost certain at least one of my characters in each book makes a comment on the night sky. I’ve always pointed out stars and planets to my boys. Now they both use star apps on their phones.

Photo by Hristo Fidanov from Pexels

Living in an apartment complex like I do, it isn’t dark enough to see many stars. I feel like I’m missing out. It’s been a habit for years to look for the Big and Little Dippers and Polaris. I’ve never been able to find the many other constellations within our viewing range. I’ve found satellites, though.

I guess this is where I’ll end this post and say farewell to Bloganuary and to the other participants. I don’t know if this is the first Bloganuary, but I’ll likely participate next year, too, if it comes to pass.

Stay well. Be safe. See ya! ~MJ

    • Day 30 Bloganuary

      Posted at 1:58 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 30, 2022

      Describe yourself as a tree.

      Huh?

Well… I chuckled when I first read this #daily-prompt for #BloganuaryDay30. Me? A tree? After reading one of the quotes I posted below, I’d call myself a willow tree.

Looking back at my life, I guess this prompt has a simple answer. The quotes I posted sums it up for me, but most importantly, I learned that:

I’m a willow tree. I’ll withstand bending instead of breaking when faced with difficulties, changes, and challenges.

      One can only hope, right?

I can relate to the following quotes for a description of me as a tree:

Be like a tree. Stay grounded. Connect with your roots. Turn over a new leaf. Bend before you break. Enjoy your unique natural beauty. Keep growing. Joanne Raptis

Adapt yourself to change as the willow tree adapts itself to the weather. When the harsh winds of circumstance sweep across the landscape of your life, bow gracefully, bend gently, adapt graciously.
You are wise to study well the ways of the willow. In the face of change, in the throes of adversity, in the midst of conflict and crisis, the willow willingly bends its branches, but refuses to release its roots. ~William Arthur Ward, “The Wisdom of Adapting Yourself”

Image by David Mark from Pixabay

      In the springtime, leaves unfolding,

      Growing, growing one by one,

      In the summer, always giving

      Cool, green shade to every one;

In the autumn, tall and stately,

Dressed in yellow, red and brown,

      In the winter, sleeping, sleeping,

While the snow comes softly down…

~Charlotte Lay Dewey, “A Song of the Trees,” in Kindergarten Review (Springfield, Mass.), October 1906

    • Day 29 Bloganuary: Simple Acts

      Posted at 6:21 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 29, 2022

This is Day 29 for Bloganuary. I can’t believe there are only two days left both in January and Bloganuary. Today’s prompt is:

How are you changing the world?

Let’s face it… On a planet of billions, little old me trying to change this big old world is beyond my limitations. If I can change someone’s day, human (or animal), with an act of kindness or a smile behind my face mask, I’ll be happy to lift their spirit the best way I know how.

How about this? In a grocery store, if someone stops their shopping cart to let me pass in front of them, I’ll say, “Thank you! I’m smiling behind my mask.” I see their eyes brighten and can tell they’re smiling, too. That’s a simple act, but kindness is remembered.

When I have to throw away the drink carrier plastic we find on a four, six, or eight pack of bottles, I cut it into pieces so it doesn’t become a problem for wildlife like in this video. Recycling would, of course, be better if I lived closer to a recycling facility.

In addition, I like to think that after all the years I taught children life skills and how to read, I had a part in giving them tools to contribute to changing their little part of the world, too, but who knows if one day they’ll want to take on a larger piece of the world.

Shopping at smile.amazon.com helps to support a charity you care about. At this point, my charity is Salt River Wild Horse Management Group. In the past, it was Make a Wish Foundation and will be again one day.

I didn’t expect to write this much, but here it is. Today’s prompt wasn’t easy for me to answer until I broke it down into simple things that can be done to change the world, even if only through one small act at a time.

      Have a wonderful night. ~MJ

    • Day 28 Bloganuary: Gravelly Voices

      Posted at 6:33 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 28, 2022

What is on your music playlist right now?

What is on all of my playlists? Country is my preferred genre. If I had music on now, it’d be Clay Walker since he heads my Pandora playlist. The reason I chose him is because I like to hear voices similar to his. I added an “s” to playlist because I have different playlists for different reasons and moods. Don’t a lot of us listen to a variety of music? For part of last month, I listened to Christmas music.

Gravelly, crackling voices like Chris Stapleton, Dierks Bentley, and Gary Allan send a shiver down my spine in a good way. Others on the list are George Strait, Brett Young, Luke Bryan, *Jimmy Wayne, and last but not least Alan Jackson, my all-time favorite male country singer.

You’ll find Carly Pearce, Miranda, Mickey Guyton, Maren Morris plus a lot of female country singers from my past, like Patty Loveless, Dolly Parton, and Reba McEntire, to name a few.

One of my favorites by Dierks Bentley called “Five.”

For quiet moods I like Pavarotti, Vittorio Grigolo, and Andrea Andrea Bocelli.

Bob Seger will always be a favorite, as will Adele, Jennifer Lopez, Diana Ross, Enya, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, and more. These days I listen to music more in my car than at home. It used to be I could listen while writing, but now I prefer no music unless it’s at a low volume in the background.

This prompt makes me want to turn on my music and relax. Maybe this weekend. How about you? Are you listening to music right now?

Have a nice weekend! Thanks for dropping in. ~MJ

    • Day 27 Bloganuary: Alone Time

      Posted at 8:14 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 27, 2022

Hello. Welcome. This is the 27th prompt for Bloganuary. The month sure is moving along at a good click. FYI: If you’re asking what the heck is #Bloganuary, click here to learn more.

Let’s get on to today’s Prompt.

Where do you go when you need solitude?

Solitude distracts me from the norm. For me, it’s walks in a park, near a lake, or uptown. Many people walk in my town. On some days, it’s rare to find an empty place there, but people watching and overhearing a bit of their conversations are part of my solitude, if that makes sense.

      Copyright Mary J. Dressel

I live in a four season climate with harsh winters, so walking year round is often too cold. When possible, I walk to get away and breathe in fresh air. Since I’m alone a lot of the time, anyway, I don’t always need to be outside of my home to find solitude. If I stay inside, I read a book or watch TV. That escape acts as a distraction from what is my norm and gives me peace of mind. It might be hard to believe, but getting lost in writing is a form of solitude to me, too, because it takes me away to whatever setting I’m writing and gives me an escape the same way reading does.

How do you find solitude or peace of mind?

This link takes you to other bloggers’ posts who are using today’s prompt. Thanks for popping in today. ~MJ

    • Day 26 Bloganuary: Gratitude

      Posted at 11:29 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 26, 2022

We’re on Day 26 of Bloganuary #daily-prompts. Wow. I praise those of you who have posted every day or even most of the days this month. I didn’t begin until the sixteenth.

Note to new visitors: It isn’t often I post daily on my blog. This is something I’m trying out for the month of January 2022. WordPress created Bloganuary and gives us daily prompts to write about. It’s a way to get in the habit of posting. Get all the information you need HERE. You still have until the end of the month to write your own Bloganuary posts.

The prompt for today asks what is a favorite thing about myself. I’d rather ask others what their favorite thing is about me. Of course, I won’t! Instead, today I’m using a previous prompt. Earlier, I noticed the introductory #Bloganuary message said we can use the prompts or write anything we want. Well, great, because today I’m backtracking again to a prompt I missed:

What are 5 things you’re grateful for today?

I got up on January 1st this year and grabbed a stack of sticky notes (before coffee). I wrote a title:

In the beginning, I added to my notes in the morning, but throughout the day, I came up with other reasons to be grateful. Now I write it down when a new reason comes to mind. For example when the sunshine melted snow off my car. This meant I didn’t have to go outside to do it myself. Brrr. ☃❄☃

I chose these five to share with you today.

I figured in this case I’d show instead of tell. Thanks for visiting. It’s Wednesday. Soon, I’ll get back to posting Wordless Wednesday posts. ~MJ

    • Day 25 Bloganuary: Strength

      Posted at 4:33 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 25, 2022

Howdy, folks. Here we go with today’s Bloganuary prompt:

Write about something that makes you feel strong

I could sum this up with one word, but I’ll add a few more:

      INDEPENDENCE

      That’s right.

Independence gives me inner strength and makes me feel strong. Without the inner strength that led me to this point in my life, I wouldn’t be the person I am today, and I’m grateful to God for His part in my survival.

I hope you don’t mind seeing two posts in your inbox today. Inspiration caused the first one.

      Thank you for reading.

    • Day 24 Bloganuary: Dreaming Dreams

      Posted at 5:47 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 24, 2022

Our Bloganuary prompt for today is:

Write about a dream you remember.

This prompt can be taken a few different ways. To actually dream while you’re sleeping, a daydream, or a dream come true. Hmm. What does Merriam-Webster say?

Some memories of dreams while sleeping escape me when I wake. If it’s a dream about a writing idea, and I wake right up, I write it down.

Common dreams have me running away from or toward something and stumbling and falling. Or the falling off a cliff kind of falling. Fearful dreams because I’m running to get help or trying to call an emergency number. I rarely reach the phone or get the help needed for whatever my subconscious mind thinks I need. Sometimes someone is preventing me from running. You’d think I write horror with such dreams!

Other dreams are with the similar fearful energies where I need help for myself or someone else, but my voice freezes. This happened again two nights ago. I can’t remember the dream, but I had to sound threatening. Other people were in the dream and near me, but I don’t know who, why, or what they were doing, but it wasn’t good…

Over and over I tried to yell, but my words barely came out and when they did, they couldn’t be understood because of my fear. I remember trying, trying, trying to get sensible words out, and finally, I yelled, “GO! GET OUT” as loud as I could… In reality.

      I woke myself up!

I know others have dreams of running or falling, too. Please tell me I’m not the only one who screams out in the night. I have heard one of my boys yell out in his sleep before.

So, there’s my Day 24 response to a dream or dreams I “sort of” remember. Have a good one, folks!

      Pleasant dreams.
