    • Inspiration Strikes Again #2

      Posted at 12:09 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on September 6, 2022

Howdy, folks. Here is the follow-up excerpt I mentioned in the previous post. For those who missed it, I had intended to start book six in the Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight in 2023. The excerpt I’m posting is to give you a look at Rob, who stars in the sixth book in the series. He appears in almost every book in the series and the spin off series.

The setting for this series is my fictitious town of Canyon Junction in Arizona with the Sonoran Desert and Superstition Mountains as a backdrop. Check the link HERE if you want to know more about the series. Books are rated between a PG-13 and R rating by movie standards. Going forward, I intend to update all of my books to a PG-13 rating and below. My newest books are already there. Rob’s book will reflect the change too.

The image in the graphic isn’t part of the book cover for Rob’s book.

Set up: Nora and Tristan had a major argument, and she needed a ride home. Who better to call than a longtime friend.

Like Rob’s long hair, so is this excerpt.

      Excerpt:

This would kill her, but she’d have to ask for a ride. Who could she call? She took out her phone and called her old friend Rob Adams who recently opened Rob’s Place, a local sports bar in town. What choice did she have?

      He answered, “Rob’s Place.”

      “Rob? This is Nora Trinity.”

“Nora, hey, hi. How’s it going, girl? Grab Tristan and come up for a drink on the house. We’re kind of slow tonight.”

Nora dropped to the bed. The bar was noisy and didn’t sound slow at all. Glasses clinked and TVs blared in the background. “Can I ask a big favor?”

“Huh? What’s wrong? Are you all right?”

His voice held concern. They’d been good friends in school, but that was a long time ago. They’d run into each other in town a few times since she’d been back, and she and Tristan visited the last place he worked before opening his own bar, and the Grand Opening, but she had to ask. “I need a ride home. Please don’t ask me any questions.”

      “All right. Where are you?”

Don’t cry now. Oh, should she be doing this? Maybe Tristan would have a change of heart when he returned… That didn’t matter. He needed time to think. She did, too. “I’m at the Double Dutch. Tristan’s section of the ranch.”

      “Is everything all right there?”

      “Not for me.”

He must’ve been behind the bar because it sounded like he juggled beer glasses to patrons. “I’ll be right there.”

“I’ll be waiting at the office. Thank you so much, Rob.”

She looked up after disconnecting. Tristan waited at the door with his hands gripping the jamb. “I’m leaving. I had to call for a ride.”

“I know. I came back to give you a lift.”

He had removed his flannel shirt and looked so good standing there in a black t-shirt and black jeans. That shock of hair on his forehead needed to be brushed back. Would she ever be able to do it again? “I have a ride.”

Photo by Brett Jordan on Pexels.com

“I brought you here, I’ll take you home. Cancel your ride.”

“No. I had to embarrass myself by asking, and I’m going through with it.” She stood and picked up her bag. He didn’t move out of the way. She peered at him eye to eye. “Let me pass.” Tristan turned enough to let her slip by. “You know where I live if you change your mind.” She strode down the hall and ran into Destiny at the top of the stairs. That was the last thing she’d wanted. Hold it together a little longer. “Hi, sweetheart. I’m going home now. I’ll see you later.”

Destiny stomped. “No, Nora-Mom. You have to stay.” She looked up at Nora with wide eyes. “Why are you going? Can I go with you?”

Tristan came over to take her hand. “You’re not going with her.”

Nora knelt to hug her tightly. “I love you, Destiny.”

“Nora, don’t go with your suitcase.” She cried. “Don’t go!”

Nora rushed down the stairs. Destiny broke from her dad’s hand and ran down after her. “Nora, don’t go.” She took Nora’s hand.

“Destiny, you can’t go with me, honey. I’m sorry.”

Tristan came down the stairs to take her hand again, but she pulled away from him. “No, Daddy!” She ran upstairs and slammed her door.

Nora peered at Tristan. As much as she tried not to cry, she couldn’t hold it back. Oh, God, oh, God. She rushed past Judy who no doubt came to see what was wrong with Destiny. No, she couldn’t face her. She hurried toward the office, closed the door, and locked it behind her so no one followed her in.

Headlights shone through the front window. She rushed out and Rob pushed the door open in his truck, so she stuffed her bag and purse in ahead of her. Nora glanced toward the office door when she reached for her seat belt. Come on, Tristan, don’t let me go.

“Where to, Red? Don’t you live out on the golf course?”

“That’s right. Drive please.” Rob didn’t look clean-cut like he had during their high school days. Now, he had long hair and tattoos. It fit him though, and he was even more handsome all grown up.

“Tristan’s a crazy asshole if he let you go that easily. Wanna go back to the bar for a drink?”

Her stomach reminded her she hadn’t eaten, but she wasn’t sure if she could. There wasn’t much at home to eat, either. “Sure, I can’t promise to be good company right now. What’s your special tonight?”

“I’ll make you one of my special burgers.”

      “I’d like that. Fries, too?”

      “The best in town.”

“Thank you for giving me a ride.” She broke down and cried again to think of the future without Tristan and Destiny. “I can’t have a drink.”

Rob put his hand on her shoulder as a friendly gesture. “Oh, I see. That’s okay. I have soda…and milk.”

“Don’t mention it to anyone. No one but Tristan and I know.”

“I won’t, but now that makes Tristan look like an even bigger asshole.”

“He’s not to blame. It’s my fault for not trusting him.”

      End of excerpt.

Oh, the joy of writing romance! ❤

If you read this far, thank you so much.

Happy Belated Labor Day to my fellow Americans.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance, Easter, Short Snippet SaturdayHow’s your weekend going so far? Coloring Easter eggs? I remember those days. It used to be so much fun to do with the kids, both my own and students. My weekend? Same old, same old, but that isn’t bad. Here I sit at my computer with a document in front of me. I can’t complain. Well, I can complain about things, but I won’t.

Wishing you all a Happy Easter.

This snippet  has  nothing to do with Easter, but today I thought I’d share one of the rewrites from book #1, Cowboy Boss and his Destiny. Tristan has some issues going on in this new edition. No matter how hard he tries to convince his family they have nothing to worry about, some of them find it hard to overcome the past.

Modified from the original to avoid spoilers.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance, short snippet SaturdayNora’s mind had become unsettled. She glanced at Tristan when he entered his office through the interior door. He wore those damn chaps again. The sexy look of him wearing them lit her up inside. However, she needed to avoid him. She leaned back against her chair and stretched. This morning after her doctor’s appointment, she’d taken a detour to a gift store she’d found online to purchase a special gift for Judy’s birthday next month.

Two nights ago, while perusing an online catalog with her, Judy had mentioned, or hinted at how much she’d love a handmade necklace like the one in the catalog. Nora had wanted to see the necklace in person before purchasing. Besides, she’d felt terrific after seeing the doctor, but she should’ve avoided the detour.

After what she’d seen today, her good mood had crashed and burned. As she had driven past the casino toward the store, Tristan’s truck pulled out of the parking lot. There’d been no mistake. His truck was undeniable. Her world had dropped into a sinkhole, and her heart had fallen in first then got buried by the weight of dread. There could’ve been many reason’s he’d been there. To eat? A business meeting concerning his magazine? Having a business meeting at a casino wasn’t a wise choice for him, and he knew it, or so he’d led her to believe. Nora sat back and sighed.

She brushed it off to concentrate on catching up with work email, but she couldn’t focus. She had to trust him. If she approached him now, both of their worlds would fall apart. But why? Why would he risk everything? Knowing her, she’d blurt out the same question, but she couldn’t, not until she figured out a way to bring it up or pretend it didn’t happen. Trust him. There has to be a good reason.

Nora rose from her chair and paced around her office. She’d be taking a short hiatus from the blog. Everything had been caught up, and Tristan could handle the rest on his own. Of course, she’d help with the magazine from home. Thunder in the distance fit her mood today.

Nora fanned her face. What had happened to the air conditioning? She strode to the door and thought of getting iced tea from the kitchen. Tristan had removed his chaps and now stood at the window peering outside. His wide stance and an arm across his chest showed he was agitated. Maybe he had something to tell her, but he brought the phone up to his ear. She ducked back inside to listen. Albeit, she didn’t want to hear what she didn’t want to know. This felt like betrayal, when in fact, the betrayal would be to her. She wanted to go home and cry.

This will be fairly short to announce:

I republished Cowboy Boss and his Destiny on March 26th.  Amazon was the last retailer to update the new cover, so now we’re good to go. I didn’t want to promote this book without the new one since it fits the revised edition so much better.

I published over the old file. Those of you who have the original version won’t be able to purchase this version unless Amazon will notify readers of a new update. Then you can update the book via your Amazon account under Manage Content and Devices. I have to ask them to do this and I will, but they don’t always do it unless they think it’s necessary. If you read Tristan’s Destiny, then you are familiar with most of this new version, but there have been many rewrites in the original Cowboy Boss. I rewrote the beginning, too. This project was fun to take on but sure wasn’t an easy task.

Visit this LINK for the new blurb, now a combination of Cowboy Boss, Tristan’s Destiny, and more to reflect new goings-on.

As soon as I saw this couple, I knew this had to be my Nora and Tristan. I enjoyed revisiting them during this revision and learned some new things from a few of the characters, including Tristan.

I’ve had a rough time the past couple weeks, continuing into the third, but I’ve done my best to stay upbeat and positive. I have medical tests coming up in my near future, a blood test today, and had two doctor appointments this week. Bah humbug. At least with this posted, and the book republished, it’s one more thing off my mind. I mustered up the “feel good” long enough to get Friday’s post ready.  Yesterday my computer started acting up. As Gilda Radner says, “It’s always something.”

Again, here’s the link to the Double Dutch Ranch page if you want to check out the new blurb. Thanks for reading.

    • Revisions? Questions Answered

      Posted at 4:09 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 19, 2018

I thought I’d begin by sharing a quote I saw on Twitter today by Paul Coelho. I love this author. You can find his books everywhere and he posts quotes on his Facebook and Twitter pages.  🙂  I should’ve thought of him when I wrote the post about authors I’d like to meet. Here’s his quote:

Before a new chapter is begun, the old one has to be finished: tell yourself that what has passed will never come back.
Remember that there was a time when you could live without that thing or that person
Nothing is irreplaceable, a habit is not a need. ~Paul Coelho

      But now I go forward…

A couple weeks ago I wrote a post titled Making the Old New Again about a major revision I’m doing with Cowboy Boss and his Destiny and Tristan’s Destiny in my Double Dutch Ranch Series. I had a lot of questions unanswered by the end of the post. Now I have answers.

The questions to myself or anyone who had answers:

Will this new version be a 2nd edition?

      • No, this will not be a 2nd edition.

Will I delete the original 1st editions and start all over? Will retailers allow me to do this?

      • Yes and no. I will re-upload over the original version of Cowboy Boss and his Destiny. TRISTAN’S DESTINY, Bonus Book 1.5 will be deleted and no longer available as a single book.
      • We are allowed to delete eBooks. We cannot delete paperbacks.

Will I re-upload this over the original book #1 then delete or unpublish the original book #1.5, which doesn’t show up in my series, anyway?

      • Yes. Answered above. I will not lose the Cowboy Boss reviews this way.

This wasn’t included in my questions because I knew the answer, but I’ll clarify this now. What about my reviews for Tristan’s Destiny?

Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books, western romance, Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse

      • I have lost those reviews since both books are now unpublished and not available. However, I haven’t deleted the books, so reviews are still there with the unpublished files in my KDP Bookshelf in case I ever wanted to republish. I did copy them to be safe.

I will use the reviews in other ways like in the Editorial Review section on my book page where we are allowed to post snippets of a review. For those of you who have left reviews for Tristan’s Destiny, thank you. They are much appreciated. They will not go unseen.

Will I have a new cover designed?

      • Yes, I already have it!  ❤  ❤  My designer is amazingly fast. It took us her three drafts. It consisted of doing a lot more than sticking new people on the cover.  I’ll forever love my original cover for Cowboy Boss, but since the story has shifted, this new cover is perfect.

Did I mention this book went to the editor today?  🙂

Well, now that I’ve taken care of my own questions and answers, I must admit… It took me two weeks to decide to unpublish. Right after, I nearly hyperventilated. I had to take deep breaths and laps around my apartment. My chest hurt. I thought I might have a heart attack. Then, suddenly, the tension of making the decision rolled off my shoulders.

Revising this book was a good thing. Of course, I won’t know how others feel about it until I re-publish. What will I do if readers hate it? This is a question we ask ourselves anyway. No more questions, please (I tell myself)!

      A Positive?

I got to know my characters all over again. Well, I visit with them in every book because they continue to make their appearances if only subtly. In fact, I learned something new about a few of them. After all this time, I discovered Tristan had a dark cloud hanging over him I never caught before. This was something new to use in my rewrite. The biggest shock of all? Tristan’s ranch foreman threw in a huge surprise, then it was like Hell YEAH. BINGO! Problem solved for an upcoming book.

This business is a marathon not a sprint and life is continuously changing.

      Next Step?

I need to update the front and back matter to all my books. I started last night and it wasn’t a quick copy and paste thing because I also had to rewrite a bit of the front matter, part of my notes to readers, and whatever else I found to update.  In the meantime, I have another hero and heroine mad at me for making them wait so long right at the most inopportune time (for them). They should be all hot and bothered by time I get back to them.   ❤

I’ve turned off sharing. This is for you who have already read the first post , or newcomers.  A girl can change her mind.

Y’all have a productive and fun week Thanks for reading.

    • #AmWriting Books: Making The Old New Again

      Posted at 3:21 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 4, 2018

Hello everyone. I’ve been neglectful of posting on my blog, and I apologize for not getting around to yours, either. I do miss visiting with you. I’m making my appearance on Facebook and Twitter to stay updated. Yes, I’m still here, but my blog is lonely. Remember, at the end of 2017 one of the writing topics for the 52-Week Blog Challenge was about resolutions. One of my writing goals mentioned a major revision on two books. I’m deep into this as we speak. #LifeGoesOn

In other words, I’m consumed with this project and working long hours each day—ten to twelve hours while arguing with my muse at night to put down her lariat and go to sleep.

I’m not only revising one book, but two, because Nora and Tristan had two books.

Why would I do this to myself? When I finish my revisions, this will be one complete book where part of the first book will flow into the second book as one complete story.

Part of one book you ask? This was the culprit keeping me awake at night, but after two weeks, I figured it out. The books are Cowboy Boss and his Destiny and Tristan’s Destiny, Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight. I’ve deleted over 90K words from Cowboy Boss and his Destiny #1  and a little from Tristan’s Destiny #1.5. Take that, book pirates!

      New Cover

Cowboy Boss will never be the same book as it is now, and in fact, I’m getting ready to pull these two books from publication until the revision is finished, reedited, and formatted. It’ll be fine for new readers to begin the series with Heartbreak’s Reward, book #2 in the series or Whispers of Forever, book #1 in the spin off series.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books, western romance, Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse

Does this sound easy? I hope you said no. It is not easy.

Another reason for doing this is because I have learned so much and come a long way since I wrote Cowboy Boss. This book no longer reflects the other books in my series, nor does it reflect my writing of today. Therefore, this no longer fits as my series starter. So, yes, I’m doing this major revision for my future. Am I taking a chance by doing this? Yes. Am I hesitant about doing this? No. (not any more.) Am I scared about doing this? Terrified.

If you’re a writer, you’ve probably heard that writing is a marathon not a sprint. Consider this another mile in my marathon. #WritersLife

Oh, woe is me… The life of a writer. Oh, for joy… The life of a writer!

Cowboy Boss and his Destiny had originally been written as a standalone happy-go-lucky holiday story. It never turned out to be a holiday story or a single-title book. When I first wrote the book, I knew about half way through, this would start a series. Sure, it is a happy-go-lucky love story, but…

A reviewer called it a Hallmark movie with sex. However, the comment wasn’t meant to be positive. This book has its lovers and haters. (Read my Open Door Closed Door post.) To add some angst and more emotion and conflict to Nora and Tristan’s life, I gave them book 1.5, which will be added to the new version of Cowboy Boss as a complete story that flows together as one. LESS than a fourth of Cowboy Boss readers are reading book 1.5, anyway, but a lot of that book was necessary to further the series.

I’ve saved around 10K of Cowboy Boss before it blends into the new version where Tristan and Nora’s bond is put to the test and takes my characters on a more dramatic journey in this new version of Cowboy Boss and his Destiny, #1.

There are many dilemmas facing me as I decide how to publish this BRAND-NEW version:

      • Will this new version be a 2nd edition? If this is a 2nd edition, the original versions will remain with reviews intact.
      • Will I delete the original 1st editions and start all over? Will retailers allow me to do this? I want the original versions to disappear.
      • Will I re-upload this over the original book #1 then delete or unpublish the original book #1.5, which doesn’t show up in my series, anyway? Regardless, book 1.5 will go away one way or another. Of course, the reviews will go with it, and this book gets the best reviews. I’ve saved them.

While I’m on the subject of reviews: Reviews help tell readers, someone is at least reading the book. No reviews make it look like the book is just sitting there unread. Who wants to take a chance on that book?

Whoops, I digressed from the topic here—revising books.

I hear a lot about upcoming or new authors not wanting to self-publish. I get where you’re coming from. I had to make that choice once.

Making a revision like this to benefit my writing career would never be possible if I hadn’t published these two books myself. Nor would I be able to change the cover or pick the images for all my covers, especially my handsome heroes. I love having this control over my own books.

My next dilemma here is to change or not to change the cover. With this story now being so different, I think it deserves a new cover. Update: I changed the cover and it was the right decision!

If you’ve read this far, thank you for sticking around. I must be making up for lost time with all these words.

Have any of you published a 2nd edition? If so, what became of the 1st Edition? I don’t think Amazon will let us kill off the first edition if we publish a 2nd edition. In fact, I’m sure they don’t pull a first edition, and the upside to this is to have reviews available, albeit, new reviews will have to be garnered for the 2nd edition. I plan on finding out before I make a decision.

      The entire series to date:

There it is, folks. I laid it on the line, and I’m hoping for the best.

Super Bowl friends, enjoy the game!

See y’all when I see ya. Miss you.  ❤

      Meet the Heroines

      A Mini Blog Series

Meet Nora Trinity from Cowboy Boss and his Destiny Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight.

Four-year-old Destiny Carlson took to Nora right away when they met. She loved her red hair and once even asked Nora if she dyed it. LOL.

When Nora first hugged Destiny, she loved the baby soft smell of her shampoo, and it didn’t take long for her to become attached to the little blue-eyed girl with a big personality.

      Model portrayal. Image from Dreamstime.com

Nora is thirty-three when the series starts. She’s from our small town of Canyon Junction, Arizona but moved away after high school and worked her way through college. Moving back to her hometown was a tough decision for her.

If I had to choose an actress to play Nora in a movie, it might be Amy Adams or Darby Stanchfield (From Scandal).

      A few things about Nora:

      • Perseverance.
      • A professional and dedicated worker.
      • Confident…most of the time. One person in her life can take her down with only a few words.
      • Holds a grudge
      • She’s been a best friend to Roxanne Connor since childhood.
      • Nora is a sister.
      • Shy to a degree.
      • She reluctantly adapts.
      • She looks just as good in jeans & boots as she does dressed to work in Tristan’s Nora boots2office. He once told her that everyday was a casual day, so I think he likes jeans and boots best. She does have a cute little skirt he likes… I digress…
      • Sensual and sexy, without sexual hang-ups
      • Nurturing.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance, Newly Revised Edition

      Double Dutch Ranch #1

That’s about it for now. I can’t give away all her secrets. You’ll meet her best friend Roxanne Connor in this book. She becomes the star with Randy Drake in Lassoing the Last Dance.

Next time you’ll meet Brenna Page from Heartbreak’s Reward. Visit the blog page Meet Our Heroines where all our heroines will be added to the page as I write them in this mini blog series.

I appreciate your visit! Thank you for reading.

This book was published in February 2014 so it’s still a fairly new release. Sale Price is still in effect for a limited time. The second book will be out this summer.

Shortened Blurb (Full can be found Here)

CowboyBossandhisDestiny_MEDNora Trinity returns home after a long absence. Hired by a local rancher to help with his ranching magazine, she’s profoundly attracted to him. But, is she ready for this sexy cowboy and his four-year-old daughter? Tristan Carlson can’t keep her out of his arms. Before he can let his heart go, he has to know she’s different from women he’s met, who don’t want a package deal. But he’s falling hard.

Meet Tristan and Nora. Destiny is in the background.

      • A night Nora didn’t want to be alone…

It took at least two breaths and she gripped the rail, closed her eyes, and pictured what just happened. Omigod. When she opened her eyes and looked down, he stared up at her, a needy gleam in his she wanted to see more of. She backed away and took another big breath before going downstairs to face him.

She returned to the recliner and met his gaze—lost in the dissimilar glow of his blue or green.

When Destiny fell back asleep, Tristan took Nora’s hands. “Should I apologize?”

She ran her tongue over her lips, still experiencing the tingle, tasting him, smelling him. She met his heated stare. “No need to apologize for something pleasurable.” Something I want more of…soon.

Tristan lowered his voice. “I wanna do it again. Nora—you don’t know how much I’ve wanted to…kiss you. Our lunch together… I’m falling hard and fast for you. Fast…and damn, I don’t get it.”

“Yes I do know. I get it, because I’m doing the same.” She swallowed hard—knowing she had wanted to kiss him. Wanted to kiss him again, too. She reached for him—touched her lips to his for a second, enough to know it was real the first time—still wanting more of him. Heaven knows she wanted more.

    • Week 40 Warmth. Scent. Passion. My Sexy Saturday

      Having No Sexy ~ @MySexySaturday #Saturday7 #MSSWeek40 #MySexySaturday

      <><><><>

The “theme” this week from the My Sexy Saturday blog hop page: What happens when we’re having no sexy? When our characters are too tired, too ill or just not in the mood. We realized even though we talk about the sexy and doing the sexy and everything sexy, sometimes that just doesn’t enter the picture. Sometimes it is truly about the love between two people when the sexy fails them for some reason. One of the best songs ever to represent this stance has to be from the movie Notting Hill called When You Say Nothing At All. Follow the Link below to visit other participants.

Seven paragraphs from Cowboy Boss and his Destiny

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance, website

This isn’t really a set-up, but sometimes a man has to do what he has to do.

Grabbing his keys from the table, he hurried to his truck, started it and took off down the dirt driveway—turning right onto the first road, onward to U.S. 60. He struggled to keep it at the speed limit. For the second time tonight, he turned down her road but this time he didn’t spin around to go back the other way. Pulling up in front of her townhouse, he revved the engine before turning it off.

Tristan peered into the mirror, took cologne from the console and slapped on a small amount. He plopped his hat on. At her door, he took a deep breath and knocked hard. A light came on inside, and his heart sprinted. She opened the door—messy hair and rubbing her eyes.

“Remember I said I was a man of my word?”

She removed his hat. “Get in here.” She crashed into his arms.

Yeah, just want I needed. He lifted her, and her legs went around his waist, exciting him beyond comprehension. He kicked the door shut and took her lips in an ardent kiss on the way to the bedroom, plopped down on the bed, and lay beside her. “Let me lie with you. That’s all I want right now,” he whispered breathlessly.

“Yes,” she said, snuggling beside him.

He stretched out along side of her, one leg hooked over hers. He tightened his arms around her until he absorbed her warmth, scent, her passion. Tristan closed his eyes, and slept.

      Thank you for reading.
