    • #AmWriting Book Excerpt~ Heartbreak’s Reward: The Short Way Home

      Posted at 2:09 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 15, 2018

*Waving* I popped in to post an excerpt today. I finished my huge project, and it’s ready to go to the editor. Yay! Guess what? It has a new cover. The newly revised story deserves a new cover. I can’t wait to show it off.

Before we get to the excerpt, I’ll explain why I chose one from this particular book–Heartbreak’s Reward Book #2. A couple posts back I mentioned pulling Cowboy Boss and his Destiny and Tristan’s Destiny from publication. I did do this, but WOW did it ever break my heart. It didn’t take long for the dread to fall from my shoulders. In the meantime, I’m telling readers who want to start my Double Dutch Ranch Series in the interim, but can’t find book one, to start with Heartbreak’s Reward Book #2 or Whispers of Forever Book #1 in the Spin Off, Canyon Junction: Hearts in Love Series.

Another reason I chose this excerpt today is because of  a post I wrote for the 52-Week Blog Challenge tomorrow. A small part of the post pertains to a close-knit family and my relationship with my own sons. I never played matchmaker like my ranch mom.

Set up: Jase had come to the rescue of a sexy blonde,  a stranger to Canyon Junction, but he had to call his mom to bring gasoline. Once she met Brenna, her matchmaking skills kicked into play.  Jase stopped by his mom’s house later to return the gas can. The three beers at his moms wasn’t the only beer he’d had this night. Slightly modified from the original.

Judy nodded to the third beer in his hand tonight. “You stay off the highway going home. By the way…when are you coming back to church with us?”

What the hell? “As long as you’re praying for me, I’m good.”

She put the ice cream away and turned her attention back to Jase. “You never answered me. Are you seeing Brenna again?” She handed the bowl to Destiny and told her she’d be right along to the great room with her.

Destiny took her snack and left. “Night, Uncle Jase.”

“Night, sweetie.” He peered at his mom. “I said I don’t know. Leave it at that.” Jase set his hat atop his head. “Please don’t ever do that to me again.” He got his boots from the doorway and pulled them on.

Judy fanned her hand at him. “You hush, I was trying to help.”

Jase tossed his hat to the table and wrapped his mom in a big hug. “I know you were. I’m not sure if I’m ready…” He dropped his hands and his mom shoved a lock of hair off his forehead. “Well, Mom. I…I don’t know. One woman ruined my life, and I’m not sure I should chance it again.”

“Now, Jase, please don’t give up on love.” Judy rested her hand on his shoulder. “You’re too good of a man and never deserved what happened. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t want to hold those babies in my arms. I worry about them, too. When Destiny asks about Jaelle and Joey, it about breaks my heart.”

Jase picked up his hat. “Well, I’m heading home. Tomorrow I have to start breaking that last horse I bought.” He gave a woeful sigh. “You know, I’m not sure what to do with the kids’ horses. If I get rid of them, it’s like I’m giving up on ever finding them again. But keeping them…is one more reminder they’re…gone.” The beer had made him emotional and weakened his senses. Not what he wanted to show his mother.

“One day, somehow, we’ll find those kids.”

Her words choked him up. “I promised the last night they were home, I’d never get rid of our family horses.”

Judy hugged him and ran her hand over his back. “Then you answered your own question.”

He appreciated his mom’s comfort, but it’d be better if he hadn’t had so much to drink. “It’s expensive keeping the horses.” He dropped his gaze to the floor but glanced back at his mom. “But…when they come back home, they’ll be wanting them.” His throat constricted and he forced down a swallow.

“Absolutely.” Judy picked up her cup and made tea. “Well, I best get in there with Destiny now, unless you want to talk some more, honey.” He shook his head. Judy kissed him on the cheek. “Ah, Jase, honey… Brenna seems like a nice woman. Maybe you should think again about starting over, or at least getting out and having fun with someone. That doesn’t mean you can’t still look for Jaelle and Joey. It wouldn’t be giving up by letting another person inside. You deserve more than you’re allowing yourself.”

He pictured Brenna’s face and remembered her soft body when he’d touched her. How his had responded at touching her. “Mom, I… Maybe you’re right.” Jase gave a short nod. “We’ll see.”

Judy gave his arm a pat. “Good night, son. You best take the short way home.”

long stem red rose laying on sheet music, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance, Blog Post Short Snippet Saturday

It’s been so long since I’ve done a Short Snippet Saturday post. Today I’m giving you an extended snippet from Heartbreak’s Reward. This is too long to call a snippet, but I hope you enjoy. Jase Carlson is one of my favorite heroes. We’re in his POV.  ❤

Don’t laugh that I put this out on Friday. I got my days a little mixed up. LOL Or, maybe I hit the publish button at the wrong time. I’ll never tell.  🙂

Set up: Jase and Brenna met about an hour and a half ago after a rocky introduction. Jase is more or less coerced by his mother into having coffee with Brenna. Judy is known for her matchmaking skills. (She’d like to think so.) Brenna had to get settled into a hotel. Wasn’t it nice of Jase to escort her to her room?  🙂 After all, the restaurant is in this hotel. Modified from the original.

He continued to wait. “What is taking her so long?” Jase mumbled under his breath, forgetting what it was like to wait on a woman. He headed that way but changed his mind. The door opened, and he glanced over his shoulder. She’d freshened her make-up, and her hair had been smoothed back. Gorgeous plump lips the color of a summer sunrise quirked in a smile. “Oh, hell.” He waited where he was and she came to him.

“Thanks for waiting. It took longer than I expected.” She used her thumb to point back. “It’s a nice room. Shall we finally get coffee?” She stayed by his side all the way to the elevator, but took a step’s distance away from him while waiting for the door to open.

He inhaled the scent of her perfume. “Yeah, finally. It’s a little late for coffee. How about a beer?” Jase peered into her blue eyes. “Sound okay?” He held his hands up. “You can trust me. If any man ever meant it, I do.”

“Somehow, I believe you’re telling the truth. I did want to sleep tonight and coffee would kick my ass to wide awake.”

“A teacher who swears?” It sounded kind of cool to him.

“Well, not in school. I’m on summer vacation.” She laughed. “Once I walk through those doors, I leave the swearing to the students, the bigger ones that is. Yes, I worked in middle school, too.”

“Yeah, they have a mouth these days. I’d take my kids behind the barn and whip their backside.” Jase waited to see her reaction. He chuckled inwardly when it was exactly what he expected. “You believe me? I don’t touch my kids that way, ma’am, but I had to say it. Sometimes I can’t control what I say to get a pretty girl’s attention. Right now I wish I could touch them any way… Wait, that didn’t sound right either.”

“I must warn you that isn’t the appropriate thing to tell a teacher. We have to turn in anything we suspect…”

When the elevator opened, he held the door and motioned for her to go ahead. There was a couple on with them, and they all held their conversations. They stood outside the elevator door when they got off. “Guess I have to hope you knew I was joking.” Jase removed his hat. In an erratic move, he shoved fingers through his hair. “What I meant was, I’d like to have them near so I could hug them, kiss them good night like I used to.” He gazed into her eyes, not knowing where that all came from.

She straightened the purse strap on her shoulder. “How many kids do you have?”

He guessed she only heard what she wanted. He had told her earlier he had two kids. Why did he start this? Dammit, he should be home checking the computer, searching for his kids, not standing here with some hottie he’d just met. “Ah, Brenna, I’ll…ah, head on home.” He pointed toward the left of the desk. “The restaurant’s down the hall there.”

She opened her purse and removed her wallet. “Then I must pay you at least for the gas, but I’d like to give you something more for your help. Lord knows what might’ve happened if you hadn’t shown up.”

“Another good-lookin’ cowboy would’ve come by, ma’am. We have a slew of them around here.” He removed his hat again and held it against his chest. “Well, not as good as me and my little brothers but still good enough.” He shook his head. “There I go again. I had hoped you’d crack a smile at least. I was only joking.”

“Tell me, is this something you do often?”

“Well, yeah. No.” He peered down the hallway. “Not something I’ve done in a long time.” He took keys from his pocket. “You’ll be okay now. If you need to call the dealership tomorrow, you should find it in the phone book in your suite.” Jase sauntered over to the desk and wrote down his phone number. He went back to Brenna and handed it to her. “If you get stuck and need some help, or directions…give me a call.” He put on his hat then shifted it to the back of his head. “Glad I could help.” He turned to walk off.

      “No, Jase.”

Stopping, he sighed before glancing over his shoulder. “No, what?”

“No, I won’t ask you for help again.” She walked toward him. “You didn’t let me pay you for this offer of help. I’m grateful you stopped.”

The woman looked so fantastic standing there in dark denim jeans on long legs. Her height must’ve been at least five-foot nine. Not to mention the sexy blouse, hugging her curves, and she had magnificent curves. Dammit. He headed back to her. “Let’s get a beer, maybe a burger. Buy if you insist.” Like he’d let that happen.

western romance by Mary J McCoy-DresselJase took her hand and led her in the direction of the restaurant, but he released it almost immediately. Not that he wouldn’t have minded holding it longer. He took a big smell of her perfume…shuddered. The door from the hotel was blocked. He glanced her way and shook his head. “I don’t know what’s going on. Normally, you can walk through here.”

Brenna folded her arms across her chest. “You make a habit out of coming here?”

“What? No!” What’s with her questions? “I’ve lived here for nine years and have reasons to come sometimes. Not for what you may be thinking.” He took a step until he stood inches away from her, narrowed his eyes, and peered into hers. “I have a house with a nice bedroom and comfortable bed. If I need what you’re referring to, that’s where I go, not a hotel where the whole damn town can see what I’m doin’. You understand, Brenna?”

Brenna cast her gaze to the floor but glanced right back at him and made serious eye contact. She lifted her chin and narrowed her eyes. “I definitely understand. Now I need a cold beer.”

He took her hand and led the way to the parking lot. Sonofabitch. He liked her.

“How about slowing it down? I’m wearing heels.”

Jase stopped when they got to her car. “Get yourself a pair of cowboy boots. There’s a western store in Canyon Junction. They’ll look good on you.”

She rolled her eyes and huffed out a sigh.

“Look, all you have to do is follow me around the parking lot, and we’ll run right into the restaurant entrance.” He held the car door when she unlocked it.

Brenna sat behind the wheel and peered up at him. “Ride with me.”

Ride with her? He took a step back. “How do I know you aren’t a serial killer?” There he went again blurting out something inappropriate.

“You don’t,” she remarked, moving her head into a defiant tilt.

He headed to the other side and grabbed hold of the door handle, but it was locked. He leaned over and peered through the window, taking a deep breath.

She lowered the window an inch. “You’re going with me now?”

Jase stomped around the back of the car and to her side again. He raised his hands, agitated. “What the hell?”

“I’m sorry, the door is unlocked now.”

“Brenna, I detect a little mischief in those cat eyes. Am I going in your vehicle or not?”

“If you trust me,” she said, followed by a snicker.

“Well, that’s debatable, and I don’t know if I can trust you. Keep in mind I have a .357 on my side.” He attempted to close her door.

“Wait. You have a pistol on your hip?”

“It’s common here.” He crossed his arms. “Do you have an issue with this? I didn’t have to tell you.”

sensual western romance, Mary J McCoy-Dressel

“No issue here. Shooting is my hobby.” Brenna got out of her vehicle and clicked the lock. “Let’s ride in your big ass truck, cowboy.”

Heartbreak’s Reward is Book Two in the Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight. Jase is first introduced in Cowboy Boss and his Destiny.

      Blurb:

Rancher Jase Carlson doesn’t understand the ache in the hollow of his chest since his ex-wife ripped his heart out. She doesn’t follow the court rules where his children are concerned, making him even more pissed off. Harboring a bad attitude, he wishes he wasn’t a gentleman when he comes to the aid of a hot-headed, sexy blonde. He can’t allow her tight jeans and sweet smile to sway him, even after he’s coerced into spending time alone with her. If only he can remember that when he holds her in his arms.

Brenna Page has too many of her own issues to deal with at the moment. Not to mention being guardian to her rebellious sixteen-year-old sister, and both of them are living with painful memories. The last thing she needs is a grudge-filled cowboy interfering in her life…but his intense blue eyes and muscles to-die-for, say something she’s never heard before.

One Wrong Turn. Two broken families. Brought together by chance…and need.

Introducing Brenna Page from Heartbreak’s Reward.

sunset sky, silhouette of cowgirl sitting, knee up, arm leaning over knee, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance Blog post Meet the Heroine series

What can I say about this Midwest girl? Brenna came from Iowa City, Iowa. How does she end up in “small town” Canyon Junction, AZ with the heat, dust storms, and monsoons? In order to save Chloe, her teen sister, from herself she accepted a job here. Brenna and Chloe both needed a fresh start—

Model Portrayal: Jax from Period Images

      Brenna says,

This town’s full of damn cowboys and mountains.

Well, without that damn mountain, she might not have met Jase.

Model portrayal: Jax and Grigoris- models.

Oh, boy, Brenna is a girl after my own heart. Why? It’s easy… Jase Carlson. Dang, he’s HOT!

      Heartbreak's Reward, Mary J McCoy-Dressel

      Some facts about Brenna:

      • She nurturing.
      • Quick-tempered
      • Witty
      • Loving
      • Heartbroken
      • Spunky (The spunkiest of all my heroines to date.)
      • She’s one of two of the youngest of my heroines to date. (31) Minus Chloe, of course.
      • Target practice is her hobby.
      • She takes no crap from a particular hot-headed cowboy.
      • She drives a red Mustang.
      • Brenna would love to be a part of a family. So would Chloe, but she’s too stubborn to know she needs one.

Since you met Brenna, you have to meet Chloe, too. She insists.

      Chloe 2 resized 2

      Model portrayal: Image from Dreamstime.com

Chloe wants nothing to do with Brenna or Arizona.

      • She’s sixteen, or as she says, “seventeen” since she’s nearing her seventeenth birthday.
      • Stubborn as already stated
      • Chloe thinks cowboy’s are ridiculous. (Haha, the joke’s on her.)

I’d rather not give more away about Chloe. This sassy little girl really grew on me as the story went along. I admit to shedding tears for these sisters.

I’m thrilled you stopped by today. Thanks for reading!

You can read a short excerpt on the Heartbreak’s Reward page. Or a sample from the book HERE.

Gracelyn Clark makes her debut in the next episode of Meet the Heroines, in my mini blog series. It seems she likes the military type.  🙂  I can’t say I blame her.  ❤

    • New and Available ~ Heartbreak’s Reward is Released.

      Posted at 3:07 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on September 8, 2014

You’ve seen my cover and read excerpts for months now. I started this book on November 1, 2013 and Jase Carlson has taken me on a ride I’ve enjoyed. Yes, Heartbreak’s Reward is released.

Thanks for standing by my side even though you’re probably tired of seeing my Jase and Brenna standing on a book cover in front of a “damn big mountain.” (Brenna’s words.)

HeartbreaksReward_LRGInstead of writing a post about my new release, I’ll send you right to the source–the book page. I have pages on both my website and here, so since you’re here… You can find links at the top of the page for all my books.

      What’s Next On My Agenda?

      Double Dutch Ranch Series:

      1. Book 1.5: Target date: November 2014.
      2. Book Three: Target date: Spring/Summer 2015.
      3. Book four, and possibly one more book planned in this series. Maybe the 5th one depends on who readers would like to see in number five. I already have an idea. The place in my brain where my muse lives is getting kind of crowded.

      The Bull Rider Series:

      Book #3 Christmas 2015

Whatever else comes up in between. There’s a dramatic romance/women’s fiction novel on the back burner begging to get finished.

    • Heartbreak’s Reward Deleted Scene Teaser

      Posted at 5:06 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on September 6, 2014

It’s only days away until the release of Heartbreak’s Reward. RELEASED and available.

I thought I’d come in with a teaser. You won’t find this in the book though. This is a deleted scene. My own heart bleeds for this heartbroken cowboy. If you’ve read Cowboy Boss, you know the details that led up to this. Otherwise, it’s self-explanatory. This book can be read on its own.

      <>

Jase Carlson rolled in with the empty horse trailer at 2:30 a.m., unhooked it, and took a stroll through the barn to check on the horses, maybe hand out a cookie or two. Before exiting, he patted his horse then gave him a cookie. He dragged himself into the house, tired, worn out, driving longer than he should have. Dropping into a chair at the table in the kitchen, he removed his dusty boots. He grabbed a beer, and set it on the table in the living room to regroup for a few minutes before going to bed.

He went down the hall to kiss his kids goodnight. Turning the knob, he slowly opened the door to Joey’s bedroom. “What the hell?” He flipped the light on then ran down the hall to Jaelle’s room. Everything was gone. “She took my kids!” He burst through his bedroom door. Rebecca’s closet was empty. He pulled open dresser drawers. Nothing.

Venturing through the rest of the house, the only things gone were the kid’s toy boxes and their bedroom furnishings, some items from the bathroom, food from the cupboards. He opened the door to the back—her car sat there. “She didn’t take her damn car?” He stumbled back against the wall. What hell did they go through when she took them? What did she tell them?

Jase grabbed hold of his head with both hands. “Dammit!” He slammed his palms against the hallway 0013 smaller website textwall to hold up his quivering body, lowering his head and pushing in and out, torn to bits in an instant. Sonofabitch! No… He backed into the opposite wall and dropped to the floor, his face going into his hands. My angel’s gone. My boy…

After he quit shaking, he dialed his brother’s phone. “My kids are gone. She took them, Tristan.” And he hung up.

What is this book about? Oh, I’m so glad you asked…

Jase made his first appearance in Cowboy Boss and his Destiny. He’s the oldest brother at the Double Dutch Ranch, and he has a story to tell.

      • Tagline: Sometimes a wrong turn takes you to the right place.

Rancher Jase Carlson doesn’t understand the ache in the hollow of his chest, since his ex-wife ripped his heart out.

The last thing she needs is a grudge-filled cowboy interfering in her life, but his intense blue eyes and muscles-to-die-for, say something she’s never heard before.

      • Set-up: Brenna and Jase have a few extra minutes before her sister returns.

Brenna nodded and went into the room ahead of him. This time his bed was made and the room was bright. Jase removed his boots and crawled into the middle of his bed, holding his arms open. She kicked her shoes off and lay beside him.

He pulled her close, tight up against his body and held her. She relaxed in his arms, yet, a part of her wanted to draw away. At least the shuddering was only on the inside. “You’re amazing, Jase…your touch, smell, everything about you. I can’t wait to know all about you.”

“Baby, you can’t wait? Come inside my body and see the torturous battle going on.”

“Mmm, I’ve fallen so hard for you.” She slipped her arm around his waist. “Please explain how this happened.”

“I wish I could.” He nuzzled his face against her hair. “Let me hold you and dream.”

Brenna whispered, “I want to be in your dream, doing things I’ve only imagined.”

“You’re in it. It’s all about you.” Jase lowered his voice. “It’s you and me making love in my dream. Join me for now in the dream world. See it in your mind’s eye first.”

She cuddled closer. “Describe it to me.”

    • Heartbreak’s Reward~ MFRW Book Hooks ~ Alone With Him?

Today I bring you a short “hook” from my upcoming release Heartbreak’s Reward, Book Two in the Double Dutch Ranch: Love at First Sight series. Coming early September 2014.

      It’s Wednesday again!
      Welcome back for Book Hooks.
This is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog.

Come on. Take a chance. Get HOOKED on a new author.

Tagline: Sometimes a wrong turn takes you to the right place.

Setup: They haven’t known each other long. Jase invited Brenna for dinner. He hesitated to tell her where they’d be going…

      Excerpt:

He placed his hand over her arm, playing two fingers over her skin. “Is it all right with you? I would have asked sooner, but I feared you’d say no.”

“Um…um.” Oh, damn, now what? Alone with him under the stars. In front of that big Superstition?

“Brenna?” He stretched over and stroked her chin, turning her face toward him. “You can trust me. I’ve had more than one chance to ravish you. I could right now, right here.”

But what about trusting herself? Her insides tumbled like an offset dryer. “Okay,” she managed to get out. “I like homemade steak—especially the badass kind.” Her voice was higher than she recognized as her own. Was it fear? Kind of—but maybe not the kind of fear she had expected. He wasn’t the one she was afraid of. Her body’s reaction to him is what caused her fear.

      Sensual Contemporary Western Romance

      Coming Early September 2014

      What is this book about?

Rancher Jase Carlson doesn’t understand the ache in the hollow of his chest, since his ex-wife ripped his heart out.

Brenna Page has too many of her own issues to deal with at the moment, not to mention being guardian to her rebellious sixteen-year-old sister. The last thing she needs is a grudge-filled cowboy…but his intense blue eyes and muscles-to-die-for, say something she’s never heard before.

One wrong turn. Two broken families. Brought together by chance…and need.

      ______________________________________________________________________________

Let me tell you ahead of time that Jase is one to be reckoned with. He’s a hero after my own heart.

    • Sneak Peek Excerpt: Heartbreak’s Reward, Book 2

You are not imagining things. Mary is actually writing a blog post. I’m sorry it has been so long. Hope you’re still around to read this sneak peek into Heartbreak’s Reward. I don’t talk much about Jase and Brenna, the hero and heroine here. Of course, Jase is introduced in Cowboy Boss and his Destiny, but I’m writing this as a standalone book—same as Cowboy Boss.

Double Dutch ranch series: love at first sight #2 Peek

Set-up: Brenna is new in town. She’s been having a hard time finding her way around.

      Here we go:

Brenna no sooner got near the entrance and the tall cowboy came out through the door. His face lit with a big smile. “Wow, good timing,” she said.

Jase gave her a nod. “Hi there, Brenna Page. I see you made it all on your own.”

“I didn’t know you came here, too.”

      “It’s closest to the ranch.”

“Thank you for the directions. I loaded up my car so I need to get the food home to the fridge.” He looked so good, rugged, dirty, and all rolled into a handsome guy. She hadn’t noticed how white his teeth were last night. Maybe it was his tanned skin making them look that way. Either way, he was smoldering hot. The intense blue of his eyes just sparkled in the Arizona sunlight.

“Yeah, me too, girl. I have a couple big steaks in here. Sure don’t want them to spoil.” He tilted his head toward his truck a couple rows over. “I have to get these home.”

They walked beside each other until he turned off toward his vehicle. “I’ll see you later, Jase.”

      “Hey.”

Brenna looked over her shoulder. “What is it?”

He stood there, two paper bags in his arms, head cocked a bit, and he licked his lips. Hard to miss that. “Have lunch with me. I’ll run this home, you do the same.” He nodded across the highway. “There’s a place right over there. Good food. How about it?”

        ~*~

Hmm, what does Brenna do next? Is she hungry…for lunch? *snicker*
