long stem red rose laying on sheet music, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance, Blog Post Short Snippet Saturday

For today’s post, I’m posting a snippet with my Army Ranger, a soldier-cowboy from the Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight – Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord.

Dane Carlson gave up ranching to serve his country. He swore he’d never get involved with a woman until he retired from the military. Then he met Gracelyn Clark while waiting for his flight back to Ft. Benning. From there he’d be deployed for nine months. Gracelyn’s flight had been delayed too. We’ll say they had an enjoyable night together. This snippet picks up two weeks later. Gracelyn is arriving for his deployment.

      Snippet

      Slightly modified.

Dane gulped, still not sure how it happened. If the weekend worked out, he’d mention her to his mom. He hoped his mom wouldn’t break a leg dancing on the dining room table. Everything about this woman said forever…if she was real. He shuddered.

Then, her picture appeared on the screen when the phone vibrated, telling him the shudder was for the right reason. She was real. He put it into gear and drove to her gate. There she stood. “Criminy almighty.” Hotness times ten or fifty. Gracelyn wore a body-hugging, blush colored dress with piping in a darker shade that ran across the front and above the waist. Holy… High heels made her at least three inches taller. “Whoa-oh, baby.”

Her hair waved down her back with a few locks falling over her shoulder. His heart raced at first sight. He wanted to run his hands over the smooth material of her dress and over her curves. Three privates stood to the side, and he had a good idea of their thoughts. He’d be thinking the same thing. Hell, he already was. They’d think differently as soon as he stepped out of the vehicle. His new rank of Master Sergeant garnered even more respect than he previously had as Sergeant First Class.

He opened the door and hopped out, taking a minute to salute the guys back. With her arms held open, he went into them like a little boy seeking comfort. “Gracelyn,” he murmured. “You’re real. Thank the gods I didn’t imagine you.” The little boy rapidly turned into a man. Holding her this way, he felt protective. Her supple, petite body fit nicely into his arms. He leaned his cheek against the top of her head, his arms tightening so his body could sink into her.

“I’m real, baby.” She held him close. “You feel fantabulous in my arms. ACUs look great on you.”

“Fantabulous, eh. That’s a big deal.” Dane gave an extra tight squeeze. His fingers moved up and down her back, taking note of the zipper. The dress held the smoothness he imagined. He held her an arm’s length away. Her eyes were as striking as he remembered. “You look great. Wow, as stunning and sexy as you were in my dreams.”

She smelled heavenly—feminine and floral but with enough spice to make it sexy. Pushing her hair back, he stared at her eye-catching features. “You’re so beautiful.” His lips parted to kiss hers. “Mmm,” he mumbled before their mouths connected.

She rested her palms against his chest, her gaze following as she clenched the material. “Your muscles are bigger.”

“They’re the same, honey. I’ve been working day and night for two weeks. Got to.” He took one hand from his chest. “Come on.”

Dane opened the passenger side door, and she took his arm. “I’m glad I came. I have an apartment lined up to look at in Phoenix when I fly back. Timing is perfect.”

“Check out the other areas closer to work. Avoid that Phoenix traffic.”

“All right.” She peered up at him. “Thank you for asking me to come.”

“My pleasure. Get on in there. I got you a room close to the base.” It was one of the best in the area and a lot of families stayed there when there was a reason to come.

She slid inside but caught the door. “Room for me? What about you? No leave time?”

“Let me get in.” He closed the door. What about me? He couldn’t assume she’d want him staying with her, so to be safe, he hadn’t planned it. It wasn’t far from the base, so it wouldn’t take anything to run back and forth.

Inside before shifting, she reached over for his hand. “Aren’t you staying with me?”

Dane pulled out and headed down the highway. Yes, he wanted to stay with her. He wanted to learn what he hadn’t known yet. Touch her. Feel her in his heart. Dammit, what happened to me? This would be a difficult weekend. He should’ve said good-bye over the phone. Everything he didn’t want had happened. But he hadn’t known he’d want her.

      END

Believe it or not, it took me most of the day to post this. It was fun looking for a snippet, though. Again, I might as well show my old stuff since I have nothing new to show. Unfortunately, this holds true for the rest of the year.

I’ve been “under the weather” all week. It could be from my booster shot, or I picked something up before or after. I did get to see my youngest son for a short visit when he and my DIL were in town. He worked virtually while my daughter in law worked at another of her company buildings here. It’s sad when they leave, but they’re happy where they are. I want them to be happy.

I hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend. Thanks for visiting.

    • Short Snippet Saturday & National Drink Wine Day!

Greetings! It has been eons since I’ve done a snippet on Saturday. Well, this headline is fitting in two ways. For today’s snippet, I planned on doing an excerpt from Dane’s book because I have two promos going on. One at Bargain Booksy and one at Robin Reads. And, the book is on sale! The book sits at #16 right now in Contemporary Western Fiction at Amazon. Wahoo.

      mary j mccoy-dressel, western romance

Another reason Dane’s book is fitting is because it’s National Drink Wine Day. Gracelyn, the heroine in this book, is a Guild Wine Master. Cheers!

Today my snippet comes to you in the form of a graphic. I checked to see if I posted this before, and I didn’t find it in my search. My apologies if you did read this in a previous post or my newsletter. Settle back with your favorite wine and sip as you read.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance

Gracelyn enters at the perfect time. She thinks she’s pulling a fast one over on Dane about her choice of wine. Sometimes Dane speaks before he thinks. A couple more beers at this meeting with Gracelyn, he might’ve said more. Yes, he’s drinking beer after his flight to Ft. Benning is delayed. Delayed all right. Delayed until the next day. Need I say more?   ❤ ❤

I have an opened bottle of Prosecco, a sparkling wine, for later. If you drink wine, do you have a favorite you’d like to recommend? Remember– “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk.” Salute!

I appreciate your visit today. Thanks for taking the time.

      • Gracelyn prefers to be called Grace…

She indicated no to another glass of wine but drew her attention back to him. “Call me Grace. Everyone does.”

He hesitated a few seconds, thinking about her full name. The sound of it reminded him of innocence, even though her persona kind of spoke the opposite. “Do you have anything against Gracelyn? It’s nice.”

She fingered a silver chain necklace. “No, not really. Most don’t use my full name.”

With a tilt to his head, he gave a cocky grin. “Maybe I’m not like most.”

      Oh, that cocky cowboy/ soldier.

I enjoyed creating Gracelyn Clark, but I have had a blast creating and getting to know all of my heroines.

    • Short Snippet Saturday: Mom’s Turn

      Posted at 10:04 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 5, 2016

Hello! I hope you’re having a fantastic Saturday. I’ve skipped Short Snippet Saturday for the past two weeks, but now I’m back with another short snippet.

Today’s snippet was inspired from a post I read the other day on the Myths of the Mirror Blog. I commented on “Those Darn Cussing Characters” while there. You can read the post for yourselves.

      Cussin jar2

It got me to thinking about my own books. Readers know my people curse when the need arises. People who know me personally are probably shocked that I write curse words. 0_o When I started writing, I worked in education, so I had to be careful what I wrote because I didn’t use a pen name.

Judy Carlson–the mom on the Double Dutch Ranch has a cussin’ jar. Well, it finally caught up to her in her own kitchen surrounded by two of her boys who have themselves contributed to their kids’ college fund via the jar. They don’t slip too often in front of Mom or their ladies, but for those occasions they do…Judy is prepared.

      short snippet saturday2

I mentioned in a comment on the blog that I didn’t curse on my blog except in an excerpt, but would probably only use hell or damn. Well, let’s say I’ll use curse words within limits in an excerpt. Apparently, a$$ is within limits…

This comes from Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord. Dane, an Army Ranger, had recently been made to pay up on his first night home after a long deployment. He tossed in ten dollars worth of “pay up” because he knew it would happen again.

But, what goes around, comes around. It’s Mom’s turn…

Slightly modified from its original version:

Jase pulled on his leather gloves. “I brought a horse for you to ride, Dane. It’s the other palomino I bought. Brenna brushed him up real good for you. She’s a good old girl.”

“Who’s a good old girl, the horse or Brenna?” Dane snickered. Teasing Jase was too much fun and he had walked right into that one.

Jase laughed. “I’ll send Brenna over here to kick your ass if you wanna call her old to her face. She’s pretty touchy about that.”

“Yeah, okay.” Dane grabbed his hat from the rack and glared at Jase in a brotherly love kind of way. “Let’s ride.”

Judy placed her hands on her hips. “You boys stop right there. Must everything you talk about center around kicking somebody’s ass?”

Dane had waited a long time for this. He nudged Jase, then he grabbed the cussin’ jar off the counter and held it out. “Your turn, Ma. Put in the money.” He almost jumped out the back door when she smacked his right arm. Apparently, good old Mom had forgotten about the pins in his arm.

Tristan came in the back door in a rush. “Got my horse ready. Dane, I pulled your saddle out of storage. Let’s get going so we can get back.”

“Going so we can get back. Take a break, Tristan. Live a little for Pete’s sake.” Dane turned to his mom. “See you later. I’ll be counting the money in that jar. At least a buck for your cussin’. Stick one in there for Jase, too.” With a wink her way, he went out the door after his brothers.

      dane snip and crop

Yep, even “good old Mom” can’t get away with a slip of the tongue on this ranch. Do you know anyone who has a cussin’ jar? I have two boys but I never had one in my house. Judy, my ranch mom told me she needed one.

Enjoy your weekend. Thanks for your visit today.

      Posted at 2:12 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 30, 2016

This week I decided to do a snippet from the third book in the Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight, a contemporary western romance series. Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord features the youngest brother at the ranch. I hope you enjoy the short snippet. Dane is my Army Ranger slash #Cowboy and a hero who stole my heart. This is from his mom’s point of view.

Judy went to the stove and poured herself a cup of tea. “Can I get you something to eat, son?” It was almost like a dream to have him in her kitchen. Closing her eyes a moment, she popped them back open to see if he was really there.

Dane already went to the fridge and took the flyer for pizza from the magnet. “Let’s get this.” He removed his phone from his pocket and ordered. When he put the phone down, he picked up his Duffle bag. “Same room?”

“For goodness sakes, you have the same room. It’ll always be your room.” She detected that smirk. He teased. At least he still had that tease in him.
She watched him leave. From the back, it looked like nothing was wrong. A handsome soldier decked out in an Army service uniform. He had all his limbs, and that was good enough for her. “Dane?”

He glanced over his shoulder from the doorway and lifted his chin in question.

“Your girl? She never came. Were you able to get in touch with her?” Dane didn’t like talking much about his personal life, but his personal life had been the military for years now—meant to be private. Maybe he didn’t have an issue with non-military life.

    • Book Hooks: ~ Stop by for a Hook!

      #MFRWHooks

Book Hooks is a weekly meme hosted by Marketing for Romance Writers as part of the MFRW Authors Blog. My chance to hook you? Today I’m here with another excerpt from my #Western #Romance newest release, Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord. At the bottom of the post you’ll be able to visit other participants in the weekly Meme. Thanks for stopping by.

      Here we go:

“You are giving me a lot of orders. I’m not one of your soldiers. No one can control my emotions—apparently not even me.” She swiped tears from her cheeks.

Crying? So, she cried. Of course she didn’t want him to go. He held his hand out for hers, and she entwined their fingers when she took it. “It’ll be okay. We’ll take the next days as they come. Worry about the last day on the last day.”

“Yes, we will. We’ll take the next nine months of your deployment as they come, too, until you get home. It sounds like a plan to me. Time will go by fast, right?”

“Of course.” The first night they’d met—the song they’d danced to—the words haunted him. “I want to make love to you tonight good enough to make it last until I get home.”

    • Memories, Books, and Numbers~ Not in That Order

      Posted at 4:57 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on June 26, 2015

Somewhere in this blog post I’ll be writing something I’ve never written before. Bear with me—I’ll get there.

In the meantime, I’ve been busy packing and organizing. Sounds easier than it really is. Yeah, either still or again. I’m all set now. Hard to believe I did all this while being sick. Sick in a weird way because there were/are times when I can go about working for a couple hours. Both of these facts are beginning to sound like old news. Still sick. Still packing. Life goes on.

Of course, you all know I published a book through all this, too. I pat myself on the back for that. This book has been a challenge in many ways. Publishing it showed me no mercy, either, because it was a day I didn’t feel well.

      Back to packing.

So many memories were found and old wounds opened. Some of the bad ones went into the shredder. Trust me, it’s possible. Some of the good memories will remain with me physically and in spirit forever. One thing that stood out and nearly brought tears to my eyes…okay, it did—was a poem I wrote to my “first love” and it covered every decade since we had met. This decade didn’t make it into the poem.

100_2998Heartwarming memories came upon finding lots of greeting cards from special people. I saved so many cards from my kids. I’ve packed them all in a box. I even stuck some photos of them as kids in there, and some photos of myself. I’m not vain, but after all, when they go through this, I won’t be around. My boys had this picture taken before my oldest son moved to CA. I keep the picture of them as youngsters with it now. They are in reverse order in the small image.

IMG_20150514_073316My two boys are one reason I started having photos taken of myself. At one time I didn’t. Do you? Once, I read an article about a wife/mother who neveIMG_20150514_073423r had her picture taken; therefore there were no photo memories for her family. This article was written by her husband. Maybe it was “Dear Abby.” So, I’m taking care of that. I even added some of when I was a kid. Some cards were from when they were born. Apparently, I’m a saver, and I have dragged them along with me through various moves. LOL Admittedly, I didn’t save all of them.

When I get moved, I might go through some of the items and “organize” again. It’s easier to stack empty storage tubs. I’ll have a big storage/laundry room in my apartment, so there is room. It will get small real fast once moving these items into said storage room takes place.

      Next step in moving.

      morgueFile

      morgueFile

Who will move me? I talked with two popular moving companies, but my son said he had planned on moving my stuff for me. My oldest son offered to travel from California to help. Looks like I’m set there too. Now, it’s a matter of waiting for the move-in date. Jeez, this is a lot of rambling about moving. Hope I didn’t lose anyone.

      About that first paragraph above…

How do I put this without sounding like I’m tooting my own horn, but in reality, I am tooting my own horn. Remember, I said how challenging my current book was to write and publish? It was all worth it, for yesterday when I went to one of my book pages to tweet it, I saw this on the middle of the page. See that cute little red sign beneath Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord? That says Best Seller. For two days I hung out at #2 and hoped for the #1 spot, but didn’t think it would happen. Sorry, my phone camera sucks. I should have used my iPad.

      best seller pic 2

In a rush, I tried to get my fingers to work and go to my book page then to the category page to see for myself. It has also been #1 in Hot New Releases in the same category.

It still said #2, but changed almost immediately to #1 Best Seller. I was so happy I literally cried. Literally! Sure, it’s Amazon Best Seller in Contemporary Western Fiction, but all I see is #1 Best Seller and it was/is a big deal to me.

Number #1 Best Seller is something I’ve never written before. All of my books have ranked in this category, and most are still there but to see this book in the number #1 spot warmed my heart more than I can even describe. Today it was still there, but now is knocked down to number #3. I’ve noticed it varies throughout the day as the page gets updated maybe hourly. I have a couple big promos coming up, so I can only hope to get back there. Either way, I am going to proudly say that Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord is a #1 Amazon Best Seller in Contemporary Western Fiction.

      Thanks for reading.

    • Writing a Real Love Letter

      Posted at 10:08 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on June 1, 2015

Happy Monday or whatever day it is when you’re reading this. 🙂

      ONLINE:

Being separated from the one you love can be saddening and lonesome. Been there, done that. Online communications have been known to bring each other closer– Been there, done that, too. Have you? I used to have my own “soldier boy” and writing letters was the only way we could communicate back then, other than an occasional phone call. Back then? Yes, a long time ago.

      SNAIL MAIL:

What about writing actual letters today? Isn’t this important anymore? Sure it is. My hero and heroine used any means of communication they could to keep in touch…but sometimes there can be a breakdown in communication…

Being deployed is different than what it used to be. As one of my resources told me, Afghanistan now has more cell towers making it easier to communicate with home.

My characters have learned how important it is to write real letters to each other…

His eyes widened. “Hey, will you write to me? I’ll write as often as I can, but I can’t promise that’ll be often.” He brushed bangs away from her eyes. “I’d love so much if you’d write me.”

I came across this infographic some time ago, and even included it in one of my newsletters. Now, I’d like to share it here. We should all give it a try. Do you have someone who might be waiting to receive a real love letter? What do you think they’d do if they got a real letter?

Check out this website for even more. I’m not affiliated with this site and don’t receive anything in return for posting the link. It’s just something I came across and liked.
