    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: A Series is Born

      Posted at 11:43 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on June 14, 2016

Y’all might wonder how a post this long can be a Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse post. The answer is near the end but it has to do with the making of a series, and some of you.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books

Howdy, Ma’am was going to be the only book when I wrote Caulder and Velia’s story.

      No series.

      One book.

      One ending.

Though the first book is a full novel, complete in itself, the hero and heroine in the Bull Rider Series books had so much more to tell after the first book. Hey, Cowboy materialized when I neared the end of Howdy, Ma’am, and a two book series had been born. Can two books be called a series? Mine was called a series. Now, it could be called a trilogy, I suppose.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel books, Western Romance

During the writing of Hey, Cowboy, all of my promo stated this was for the final book in the series. Doggone it, I began thinking about how I could write a third book if the mood struck me to continue the series—so I removed the words “final book” from my website. When I wrote the end to Hey, Cowboy, I truly meant it to be the “end.” But, I still kept an open mind.

Just in case, I laid the groundwork, and in the back of my mind, I knew which two characters deserved a story…if…if I made a future decision to include a third book, which I didn’t want to write. But, what if?

Back when this ideMary J McCoy-Dressel Books, western romance, Tuesday Inspiration for the Musea materialized, the idea of connecting these two characters was far-fetched, but my muse sat on my shoulder, tapping now and then against my temple. The taps turned to hard flicks and she hounded me, repeating on occasion, “Book three, book three.” You can imagine how I struggled with myself over this said third book, when there was only supposed to be one book and one ending.

After publishing Hey, Cowboy, Book #2, readers asked to see one of the other young bull riders get his own story. How could I say no? This happened to be the same bull rider I had imagined getting his own story early on. What could I do but sit down and begin writing? This was done before I announced a third book. I mean, what if I couldn’t write this character a whole story? No way could I tell readers I’d started a book only to learn I couldn’t “bring it”?

Bull Rider Series, Mary J. McCoy-Dressel,

As it turned out, I almost couldn’t “bring it” due to being sick, blah, blah, you know the story. I suppose it was destiny to write a third book. These two characters didn’t get their own book, though, but instead they share their story right alongside Velia and Caulder in Christmas at Love House: A Bittersweet Interlude.

This week’s “inspiration” stems from fans of this series. Without you, Velia and Caulder’s story would’ve ended with Howdy, Ma’am. Bull Rider Series fans? This book was written because you asked for book three. Thank you.

      Oh, by the way…

Cowboy Boss and his Destiny was only intended to be a short, sweet and sexy holiday tale about a single father who happened to be a rancher. One book. One ending. We all know what happened next…it became a series. If I had planned on a series, I would have plotted out the whole series in advance. Instead, I had to go back while still writing the first book, and fit in leads, plus add a couple more brothers to the story.

With the new spin-off series to the Double Dutch Ranch Series also coming out in 2016, I intend the first book to be part of a series from the beginning, and I have at least two other books planned. Personally, I love writing a series where my characters continue to pop up in the other books.

Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart. ~William Wordsworth

I have heard other authors say they hadn’t planned on writing a series when they had written the first book.  This is probably common among some authors who have written a series, but of course, I can’t speak for other authors.

How about you, series authors? Did you plan out a series from the beginning, or did you get part way through the first book and say, “Hell no! There’s more to tell”? Or did your readers encourage you, too? I’m curious to know whether your series started out to be a series.

My days are all messed up this week. I had to look at my computer date to see what day it was, which proves I really need this quote. My muse is trying to absorb these words. Yep, it’s been that kind of week. I hope yours has been better.

      Posted at 8:52 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on April 26, 2016

I found something new to inspire me over the weekend. As I finished up another edit on my manuscript before the editor gets it, I came across a scene that I totally loved. Yes, I wrote it! LOL.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books

I’ll share only a teeny tiny part of the scene in a graphic I made for Bull Rider Series #3. Teeny as in two lines. Maybe the image says enough by itself. I’m leaving out the full scene since this isn’t time for a snippet anyway.

This scene really inspired me, making me glad I wrote this story. A third book had never been planned for this bull riding cowboy, but readers wanted it. Oh, also? Browsing Romance Novel Covers by Jimmy Thomas is inspiring enough. Whew! He does passion with a capital “PASSION.” Jimmy is the sweetest guy!  ❤ I will use him again in my new series.

A short while ago I introduced Velia in Meet Our Heroines. This is her. By the way readers of the Bull Rider Sseries, it won’t be much more of a wait. Cover Reveal soon. As usual, my mailing list subscribers see it first.*wink* That was a lot of wording to introduce one simple graphic. 🙂

Here are the teeny tiny novel lines.

Bull Rider Series, Mary J McCoy-Dressel

As I say on the book page:

Let’s not look at this book as being early for this Christmas, but instead let’s say it’s late for last Christmas.

Remember I got sick and had to relocate at the same time? This book had to go on hold. What a spring/summer it had turned out to be. So, yes, I will release a Christmas romance in springtime, but with the storyline of this book, I believe it can be read at anytime of year.

      Have a wonderful week.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books

Waving! It sure has been a busy week in my world with writing book four in the Double Dutch Ranch Series, getting together images for a new cover, approving a new cover, editing Christmas at Love House before it goes to the editor, putting up a new blog post for my Meet Our Heroines mini blog series, and many other jobs that go along with being an author. Oh, and a pleasant breakfast out with friends who make me leave my laptop home. 🙂

Isn’t it supposed to be spring in my area of the world? It snowed this weekend and the temperatures plummeted to the low 20s F. One of my cousins who lives “Up North” had eight inches of new snow. I had a dusting but more stayed on my car than on the ground. But, I did get a brand new heating/ AC unit in my apartment. Just in time for the cold to come back! Funny how that works.

By the way, while we’re all here, I’ll take this time to say “Thanks” to those of you who voted for Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord in The Romance Reviews Readers’ Choice Awards. Unfortunately, I didn’t receive enough nominations to move to the final round, and it does feel bad when you’re so close. Maybe next year, I tell myself. I probably won’t do it again, ask that is, but if I do, please don’t hold it against me.

So, a little inspiration for the muse sounds like a good idea today because my muse and I need to get a book finished. Let’s get with the program then, right? You’ll find this quote on my About Page. It’s been there forever, and has been posted as far back as my old website. That means I really love it. (And I agree with it, too.)

Maybe your muse will like it too. Enjoy this short but sweet quote.

Perhaps imagination is only intelligence having fun. ~George Scialabba

Thanks for stopping by on my Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse Day. Have a fabulous week.

    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: This Day Belongs to You!

      Posted at 9:24 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 22, 2016

If I had to choose my great place, my first thought would be right here in front of my laptop. Here, I can soar to anywhere I choose to go, in my mind. If I could fly away to anywhere of my own choosing, physically, I’d have to sit back and give it a lot of thought, but I bet it would involve a soft breeze blowing through my hair and a warm moonlit evening. How about you?

I didn’t know who said this quote because it didn’t come with the image I found on Pixabay, though it was familiar. Duh! No wonder. A search took me to Goodreads and quotes by Dr. Seuss. I added it to the image to give proper credit.

      Y’all have a joyful day!

    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: Who Do You Trust?

      Posted at 10:53 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 8, 2016

      Trust yourself?

If you don’t, who will? Sounds easy to see two little words scribbled out on a banner, huh? It is easier to say than to do. For many human beings, trust is only a word. The phrase “Trust Yourself” has a deeper meaning.

      Trust 2

To trust myself? How do I prove trust to myself? If you could see the inside of my mind and body when I prepare to put my written words–a novel–out into the public, those words disappear from my vocabulary…momentarily. Okay, in truth, for many minutes, hours, days… They are replaced with the word Fear.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance, cowboys

In reality, I need to have an inner trust knowing that every day I’m exposed to the public–the world, which is exactly what I’m doing this minute. But, as I said above, if I don’t who will? It doesn’t take much for that trust within myself to waver, but when writing chose me to spill out those ideas my muse throws at me, I force myself to shove fear/panic aside so I can trust myself. Trust yourself. Right. Easier said than done. Trust yourself anyway.

Am I proud of admitting how “fear” can take over sometimes and blur that inner trust? No, of course not, but I’m only human. Am I the only one with that panic button lurking inside when it comes to exposing oneself?

    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: Reading

      Posted at 9:27 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 16, 2016

      I have a motto:

I believe that In order to be a writer, you have to be a reader…

I know some don’t agree. Maybe I should say “I believe this for myself.” Other writers have always been my inspiration and from a young age, I knew I’d have my name on books.

So what the heck do I read?

I like to read what I write. Contemporary Western Romance. Cowboys. Horses. Bull Riders. Ranchers. This doesn’t mean I won’t read historical fiction. It also doesn’t mean I don’t read other genres. I have historical fiction on my “Want to Read” shelf at Goodreads among other genres.

You should see what I have in my Kindle and iPad. What a variety! I DO read a LOT of books written by Indie Authors. My reading time has been cut short since I’m writing and revising now, but I have made it my goal to fit in time to read. So far this year, it’s working.

❤ As a teen, I read historical romance. Historical? Contemporary? ROMANCE? Yes, I see a pattern—romance. It’s my favorite genre, and why wouldn’t I read what I write? I love happy endings. I also read Nora Roberts, Grisham, Sparks, Patterson, to name a few.

I’ve mentioned in other posts that I started out reading Kathleen E. Woodiwiss and loved:

      • The Flame and the Flower
      • Ashes in the Wind
      • The Wolf and the Dove
      • A Rose in Winter, and many others.

And, Rosemary Rogers. I loved many, but specifically:

      • Sweet Savage Love
      • Wicked Loving Lies
      • The Wildest Heart

Do I have a favorite author? I know, I know, how do you pick one? Well, I can’t pick one, but the author at the top of my list is #1 New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Linda Lael Miller.

When I discovered Linda’s books a lot of years ago, I fell in love. When I discovered what kind of life she had from being an author, I fell in love all over again, and I knew I wanted to do that too. Don’t laugh—of course I’m not even close and never will be, but dreaming is not a crime.

Even though I was born a writer, she was my inspiration to put the pen to paper and write a novel. Well, my first two novels were time-travels, so Woodiwiss and Rogers had something to do with it too. It wasn’t until about 2010 that I started writing western romance, but believe me when I say—western romance happened by accident, but WOW, what a good accident!

Honestly, there are too many others to list today. If they write western romance, they’re probably on my list. 😉

What am I reading at the moment?

      On my Fiction List:

      • Big Sky Summer Book 4 by Linda Lael Miller (Almost finished.)
      • Christmas of the Red Chiefs by Linda Lael Miller
      • Disguised with the Millionaire by Debra Andrews (Every now and then I have to bring more suspense into my life by way of books.) I actually set this one aside to read Book #1, Weekend Wedding Deception. You might remember Debra from a past guest post.

      Non-Fiction:

      • Fried Twinkies, Buckle Bunnies, and Bull Riders by Josh Peter
      • The Second Collection: Thoughts and Other Writings by Robert Brault (This is a book I’ll read again and again.) I recently wrote a blog about quotes and Robert.
      • Master List for Writers, Thesaurus, Plots, Character Traits, Names, and More by Bryn Donovan
      • Numerous other books on the craft of writing.

       Recently Finished Fiction and Non-Fiction:

      • A Paris Christmas by Cynthia Gail
      • Big Sky River Book 3 by Linda Lael Miller (Somehow I read these out of order.)
      • The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide to Character Expressions by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi (This is a book to be used over and over.)

So, there you have it. Reading by way of the writer.

To see my reading list on Goodreads, including my own books, you can click the icon below. Thank you for reading today!

Do you have a favorite author, or are you like me and can’t pick only one? What are you reading now?

    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: To Garner Emotion

      Posted at 12:34 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 2, 2016

Last weekend I wrote a Short Snippet Saturday post about Dane Carlson, my soldier slash cowboy in Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord. Maybe this is a good time to mention how I had to get in a certain mindset to begin that book. I had to pull in emotion, get sad, and feel an ache in my heart. His book starts out n his mom’s POV. (Remember, once this was a dilemma?)

I’m a mom. Neither of my boys had to go off to war, but in my younger years, I experienced it first hand with my boyfriend at the time. Well, he was much more than a boyfriend. The emotion was raw and painful to see him leave, each and every time he left. Plus, I had intense sadness the day, and days to follow, when my oldest son moved across the country…and he’s still there.

      From Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Simple Definition of inspiration: Something that makes someone want to do something or that gives someone an idea about what to do or create : a force or influence that inspires someone.

I had to find that raw and painful ache again to begin the story through a mom’s eyes, and also to be able to view it through his girlfriend’s eyes, and even his own feelings about going to war again. (I prefer to write hero focused books.) Other than plotting out my story, before and during writing this book, I did two things:

      • Went back to the day my oldest son moved to California. Drawing from experience from the day he left, I was able to experience that emotion all over again. My heart had been broken. Our hearts get broken a lot being a parent, but we have to look at it as a step toward their happiness. And then we can smile in their happiness.
      • Listened to a song over and over and over because “I Drive Your Truck” makes me cry.

      song notes

The first time I heard this country tune, I cried. Then, one day while listening to NPR Radio, I heard the true story behind the song, and I cried even harder. Just now, I found the video on You Tube–a news report from CNN with the full story behind the lyrics. I didn’t cry, but if I play the song right now, I will. And I do plan on playing the song.Jason Alexander Charchan

Today my Inspiration for the Muse post is for the way the song and life experiences clawed at my emotions to help me write Dane’s tale. I wanted to post the video with the true story, but I don’t want it to seem that I’m using that song and story for my own benefit. (Cover model Jason Alexander Charchan portraying my hero, Dane.)

In fact, I’m not even going to post the video here.

Instead, I’ll leave you to decide if you want to feel emotion today. Click HERE to view the video.

If this is something you don’t want to experience at the moment, go ahead and skip listening. Or, maybe it won’t get to you the same way, after all, I’m the one who had to get in the right mindset to write a book.

This tune by Lee Brice was Song of the Year in 2014. “‘I Drive Your Truck’ also won Song of the Year at the 2013 CMA Awards in November.” Source: Taste of Country

Anyway, this is a couple of the ways I garnered emotion to get into the right mindset to write this book.

I’m happy you visited today. If you left sad, I apologize, but I’ll also remind you that I write happy endings. (With a box of tissues.)

    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: You

      Posted at 10:53 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 26, 2016

Hi there! I could’ve chosen cowboys, horses, my laptop or cameras, music, quotes, you, notebooks, or pens, which all inspire me to do what I do. But, today I couldn’t quite put my finger on what I wanted to post for my Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse post. Then, I came across the image below. The more I thought about it, the more this little quote made sense. It’s true. 🙂

      Every moment is…

Guess what else is going to inspire me today? YOU are. Won’t you let me know what inspires your muse, or inspires you in general to do what you do?

Some of you are photographers. What makes you take that special picture I see posted on your blogs? It calls to you, doesn’t it? Why?

Writers? Cooks? Wine Connoisseurs? Poets? Friends? Musicians? Readers? Soldiers (Military)?

      Moms? Dads?

      Anyone?

      Your turn.

Sending warm hugs to all of you affected by the recent #Blizzard2016. Been there and done that more than once in my lifetime, so I know what you’re going through. Stay positive and warm. Please be safe while shoveling and getting around. Waving to the rest of my country and the world, too. 🙂
