      Posted at 11:56 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on June 23, 2018

I thought I’d share a snippet from Finding Kimber.

Canyon Junction: Hearts in Love Series

A Double Dutch Ranch Series Spin Off novel.

She’s wary of her future. He’s burdened by his past.

Cattleman Zachary (Zach) Bryson arrives in Arizona with hopes of leaving the ghosts from his past behind. Hired by a stranger to run a ranch, he meets the owner—a secretive woman with no ranching experience. He’s seen her before, but she wasn’t a redhead with green eyes. In their first encounter, she swept him off his feet without their exchanging a word. Why did she change her appearance? What secrets lay behind those heart-stopping eyes? Seeing this job as a challenge, he sticks around to tackle this hottie head-on.

After her life is threatened, Kimber Sinclair is forced to flee her lush Oregon county for a small town in Arizona with sand, saguaros, and dusty cowboys. She settles in to live a lie—to discover the person behind her new identity while she mourns the death of Tressa Garnett—her given name at birth. However, keeping a distance from her ruggedly handsome, broad-shouldered, wise-cracking ranch foreman, isn’t easy. She struggles daily to hide her secret from Zach who demands answers. By telling him the truth, his life could also be in danger.

If trouble finds her, will she choose fight or flight? Can Zach set aside his own issues, or will his nightmares prevent him from doing what he was unknowingly hired to do?

Set up: Kimber is doing something she swore never to do… Modified to avoid spoilers:

Her breath caught. “What the hell did you say?” Greg repeated it.

“What does that mean? How?” Her heart hit the floorboard of the truck. This couldn’t have been Jerry’s doings. Who else was involved?

“He was stabbed multiple times. They’ll transfer him to their local hospital.”

“How do you know? Who did this?”

“It doesn’t matter how I know.”

“It matters. His men or woman, is still out there looking for me. There is no guarantee they’d stop looking if he…dies. I’m sure they’re all doing this for Sam now.”

Zach whipped his head around so fast, she thought it’d roll off. She nodded to him, that in fact, he had heard her right. “I’ll get the phone you mentioned.”

“Stay out of sight.” He paused. “Ah, Tressa, there’s something I have to tell you. Your father is on the way here.”

“My father will be there?” Her fingers instinctively clasped her necklace, and she pictured her gentle dad.

Zach pulled into the campground and drove around looking for their site. He stopped the truck and took her hand when he found the spot.

Greg spoke low into the phone. “I have to go.”

“Greg, wait. When my dad arrives, make sure they’re both safe. Please.”

“Jerry is under guard; therefore, your father will be, too.” He hung up.

Zach faced her, and his eyes held questions she’d become accustomed to. “Your father? Your family isn’t dead?”

Here we go again. No more lies.

Thanks for reading. Enjoy your weekend.

    • What If I Couldn’t Write for a Living? #MFRWauthor Week 4

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance

Welcome to Marketing for Romance Writers 52-Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop 2018. #MFRWauthor

      Week 4: What I would be if I couldn’t be a writer

Good topic since I’ve considered not being a writer in the last two weeks. I should say I considered not publishing new books. I’d still write. No one is taking that away from me.

“Perhaps imagination is only intelligence having fun.” ~George Scialabba

To adhere to the topic though, I’d say if I couldn’t be a writer, I’d be a photographer. I’d say photo-journalist, but this topic is about “if I couldn’t be a writer.” I like landscape  photography. I’d travel to the landscapes I’ve always wanted to visit, plus whatever amazing landscape I’d come across along the way and capture the moment to keep with me always. I love creative photography, too. A photographer doesn’t have to go far to get creative with a camera. This has been lost to me for a while.

My other option would be teaching. However, for years before I had proof of being a writer, other than some foolish love poems and stories scattered here and there, I worked in public schools with elementary and middle school age students. I’ve already done this when I couldn’t be the writer I wanted to be, and I’d do it again. However, I can’t explain my career working in noisy and crowded schools since I’m a loner at heart, but I loved the job enough to stay in it for nearly thirty-years. I was a paraprofessional/ teachers aide working with kids with learning disabilities.

I always wanted to open a bookstore. Nowadays, I wouldn’t open a store, but I’d work in one.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books, Get Caught Reading

There was a time I wanted to be a social worker until I took Sociology in college.

I could work with rescue animals, specifically dogs and horses. I love other animals, but I prefer the two mentioned.

A big office, factory, or department store setting isn’t for me, but I have worked in a big office and factories, and they worked out fine at the time.

If it came down to this in reality, I’d need a lot of time to consider other options if I couldn’t be a writer. Have you writers out there ever thought of  what kind of job you’d have if you couldn’t be a writer? Tell us in the comments.

This is a BLOG HOP. Please join in by visiting the participating authors.

Enjoy your weekend. Enjoy life. Enjoy being a writer.

Note: Are you aware that you can edit the Tweet or preferred social media that is shared with your post? I publicize to Google +, Facebook, and Twitter.

In the sidebar in my dashboard, under PUBLISH where my publicized  posts are shared to social media, it has an Edit option. You can add your hashtags and your Twitter name, etc. I’m not sure how Blogger works because I no longer use my blogger blog. Some WordPress templates may be different. WordPress.Org blogs might be different, too.

However, I’ve removed the sharing option to my Facebook Page. Through my investigations about their new changes, I’ve read that shared posts may not show up due to Facebook’s new algorithms. I’ll add my post link to my author Page manually instead of having it automatically sent there. It’s a slim chance any of our Page posts will show up anyway unless we pay to boost or create an ad. IMO. I don’t know how a shared post will be affected if shared to our regular profile. I’ll have to experiment by sharing to my regular profile instead of my Page.

    • (Not) Short Snippet Saturday: No Need to Call Me Ma’am

      Posted at 12:31 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on December 6, 2017

Waving hello! I hope you aren’t sick of me posting excerpts of late because I’m including one here for Finding Kimber. Earlier this year I had backed away from posting many Short Snippet Saturday posts. I haven’t scheduled promo for this new release like I have in the past other than social media and a sidebar cover promotion here and there. I guess we’ll consider this a promo post.  🙂  Sorry if I bore you to death.

Note: Last week I participated in the Second Change Romance Promo and Book Cover Poll at Storyfinds. My book cover for Whispers of Forever: Mending Christmas, won. Thanks to those of you who voted.

For newcomers, Whispers of Forever is the first book in the Canyon Junction: Hearts in Love Series. (A Double Dutch Ranch Spin Off Series.) The following excerpt is from the second book in the series. Three is now available too.

All right, that’s enough blabbing for now. Let’s get to the excerpt.

In the release announcement, you met Tressa Garnett in the opening scene of Finding Kimber.  Let’s see how she deals with life on a ranch, and Zach, in her new identity:

      —

      “Canyon Junction?”

“Ah, yeah. This is Canyon Junction. Arizona?” His eyes questioned for a moment, but he nodded toward the road again. “The store will be on your left off the highway. You’ll eventually find other places to shop.” He glanced at her vehicle. “Use GPS. Give me your phone. I’m fairly new here by the standards of this town. I was forced to find my way around.”

“I’m a city girl. I’ll make my way.” She pulled her phone from her jeans pocket and handed it to her bossy foreman. No one told her she lived in Canyon Junction. She reflected on the name of the newspaper—Canyon Junction Gazette. Oh, boy.

“I’m entering my phone number along with the name of the store. You’ll find it.” He handed it back. Glistening white teeth gave way to an inviting smile.

“Thank you.” She read what he had written. “Assuming my vehicle has GPS.”

“You don’t know if your vehicle has GPS?” Now he looked at her as if she were an idiot, which frustrated her.

She rubbed at her arms. “It was delivered this morning. I haven’t looked inside yet.”

      “Lucky girl.”

She left his side and hurried down the drive ahead of him. I’m a woman not a girl. And she didn’t feel lucky to have lost everything she ever owned and loved. Her new beginning brought a mouthy ranch hottie with an attitude. She glanced back, and he still stared at her. It made her want to growl out a few four-letter words at him. In fact, she might before the day ended.

Back inside the house she got her keys, but when she came out, he was nowhere to be seen. Good. Kimber started the SUV and perused the dash, taking in the new car smell. Indeed, the vehicle had everything—more than her vehicle at home had. She’d set it before leaving, and she’d also check maps for the Double Dutch Ranch. Nothing would keep her away from the Equine Camp taking place there.

Zach strutted up to her when she got out, his demeanor full of confidence. “Could I ask you something, ma’am?”

“Certainly, but you don’t have to call me ma’am.”

He tapped the brim of his hat. “Sorry, I’ll try to remember, Ms. Sinclair.”

Kimber scratched at her arms, a habit she had when frustrated. She hadn’t wanted to be. Too much had happened in a short time, and her fuse shortened by the moment. “What did you want to ask?”

His chest rose in a sigh, which she took for frustration of his own. “What do you plan on doing with this place? You have two horses. That’s barely enough to keep a foreman around. I want something steady.”

      “Well—”

“And by the way. If I’m a foreman, who the hell am I a foreman to? There’s nobody here but you and me.”

“I don’t have an answer to either of your questions.” She knew nothing that was going on here and didn’t like being out of control like this. “Maybe I’ll start a rescue, but I haven’t given it much thought. I need time here. I know I have only two horses.”

“A rescue ranch has already been done. A rancher at the Double Dutch started a horse rescue some years ago. Does good for him from what I hear. Hard to believe how many horses need rescuing so they don’t get slaughtered.”

“Ooh, that’s awful. Well, can’t we have two in this town?”

“Do you know how big this town is? No, probably not since you don’t even know what town you live in.”

Son of a bitching smart ass. Kimber fisted her hands at her sides. His rock-solid chest in that blue t-shirt looked like something good to pound. She peered into his blazing green eyes, then nodded toward the barn. “I’ll be back when I finish shopping. I’m sure something around here needs worked on. The barn needs fresh paint. The interior could use some repair, including the inside of my house. I’ll let you know when lunch is ready.” She tromped back toward the house.

      “Don’t bother.”

So, this is how it’ll be? Damn hardheaded Idaho cowboy.

    • Short Snippet Saturday: The One That Got Away

      Posted at 1:53 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on May 15, 2016

Ahh, sweet, sweet romantic love. It’s even sweeter when it’s your first love, or maybe I should say bittersweet when it comes to the couple in this snippet. You’ll meet Jake and Beth in the near future, but I hope you enjoy a snippet now.

A while back I mentioned starting a new series as a spin-off to the Double Dutch Ranch Series. Jake and Beth kick off that series with a holiday romance.

Whichever choice I make about a new series, or to add the new books to the Double Dutch Ranch Series, this book with Jake and Beth will move off the Double Dutch Ranch and onto Jake’s ranch. The Carlson family members will make their appearance in subtle ways.

Now to catch up here, and since this is Short Snippet Saturday, I better get to it instead of babbling. Again, I’m posting this on Sunday so you don’t have to check your calendars…it is my blunder, but done on purpose. Yesterday, I couldn’t get around to Mary J McCoy Dressel Booksposting anything. My little fur baby just got out of the hospital at midnight last night after an emergency. She was admitted and spent 28 hours there. It was darn lonely at home without her. She isn’t doing well. My son and I have to come to terms with this situation.

      On to the snippet.

It had been many, many years since these two spoke to each other. Beth could’ve walked away when she spotted this cowboy from her past, but she didn’t…

Modified from its original writing. Eavesdrop with me in a quaint little eatery on U.S. 60 right outside of downtown Canyon Junction, Arizona.

He held his hat against his chest, fingering the brim. “Sure am. I have a ranching business now, so yeah, you can find me in the book, online, ask a neighbor.” He chuckled. “Talk to you later.” Heading toward the booth, he peered over his shoulder. “Welcome back to town.”

“Jake?” she called as he left.

Oh, Beth. Facing her, he lifted his head in a nod and gave another once over. She looked damn good in that little cotton dress with a denim jacket atop it, but it didn’t hide a glimpse of her alluring breasts. Low boots replaced the cowboy boots she’d worn as a teen. Her hair was ten times longer than before. A trace of a Texas tan still remained on her gorgeous face. Yet, a tiredness lingered in her eyes. Gulping, he managed to get out, “Yeah?”

Beth walked up to him and he got another whiff of her sultry perfume. “Is the Coffee Shoppe still in town?”

“Sure is. Hey, they even have my phone number.” Jake sighed internally at his foolish remark. Again, she smiled that same sweet smile he had found so irresistible in the past.

    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: To Garner Emotion

      Posted at 12:34 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 2, 2016

Last weekend I wrote a Short Snippet Saturday post about Dane Carlson, my soldier slash cowboy in Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord. Maybe this is a good time to mention how I had to get in a certain mindset to begin that book. I had to pull in emotion, get sad, and feel an ache in my heart. His book starts out n his mom’s POV. (Remember, once this was a dilemma?)

I’m a mom. Neither of my boys had to go off to war, but in my younger years, I experienced it first hand with my boyfriend at the time. Well, he was much more than a boyfriend. The emotion was raw and painful to see him leave, each and every time he left. Plus, I had intense sadness the day, and days to follow, when my oldest son moved across the country…and he’s still there.

      From Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Simple Definition of inspiration: Something that makes someone want to do something or that gives someone an idea about what to do or create : a force or influence that inspires someone.

I had to find that raw and painful ache again to begin the story through a mom’s eyes, and also to be able to view it through his girlfriend’s eyes, and even his own feelings about going to war again. (I prefer to write hero focused books.) Other than plotting out my story, before and during writing this book, I did two things:

      • Went back to the day my oldest son moved to California. Drawing from experience from the day he left, I was able to experience that emotion all over again. My heart had been broken. Our hearts get broken a lot being a parent, but we have to look at it as a step toward their happiness. And then we can smile in their happiness.
      • Listened to a song over and over and over because “I Drive Your Truck” makes me cry.

      song notes

The first time I heard this country tune, I cried. Then, one day while listening to NPR Radio, I heard the true story behind the song, and I cried even harder. Just now, I found the video on You Tube–a news report from CNN with the full story behind the lyrics. I didn’t cry, but if I play the song right now, I will. And I do plan on playing the song.Jason Alexander Charchan

Today my Inspiration for the Muse post is for the way the song and life experiences clawed at my emotions to help me write Dane’s tale. I wanted to post the video with the true story, but I don’t want it to seem that I’m using that song and story for my own benefit. (Cover model Jason Alexander Charchan portraying my hero, Dane.)

In fact, I’m not even going to post the video here.

Instead, I’ll leave you to decide if you want to feel emotion today. Click HERE to view the video.

If this is something you don’t want to experience at the moment, go ahead and skip listening. Or, maybe it won’t get to you the same way, after all, I’m the one who had to get in the right mindset to write a book.

This tune by Lee Brice was Song of the Year in 2014. “‘I Drive Your Truck’ also won Song of the Year at the 2013 CMA Awards in November.” Source: Taste of Country

Anyway, this is a couple of the ways I garnered emotion to get into the right mindset to write this book.

I’m happy you visited today. If you left sad, I apologize, but I’ll also remind you that I write happy endings. (With a box of tissues.)

I must tell you this was a hard decision for me. I’m working on two books right now. I decided to use the third book in the Bull Rider Series for this challenge. My Bull Rider Series readers will be happy to hear this because this book was put on hold. Now I am back to working on it.

      Natale

Set-up: A younger Natale made her first appearance in Hey, Cowboy, Book Two when she came from Italy to visit Velia and her family. We’re in Natale’s point of view. She’s reminiscing after seeing Reece “Foley” Wilson, one of Caulder’s former bull riding teammates, in the hotel pool area a short time ago. They had met earlier in the series. We’ve jumped ahead a few years and Natale is no longer a fourteen-year-old girl.

      Here we go:

Velia wouldn’t take it too lightly if she were to sneak back down there. Maybe Foley would give her his email address or Friend her on Facebook and Instagram. What was it about him? She whispered, “I believe it’s all six feet of him, not one thing in particular anymore—like belli eyes.” Sì, everything, and this was no longer a teenage crush. In two weeks, the world would see her as an adult. Maybe Reece or Foley, whatever he chose to be called, would too. Here and now, she swooned like a young girl, but she’d only be a young girl—for two more weeks.

Thank you for reading. Don’t forget to check out Myths of the Mirror.

Until the next time, take care and have a great week. Remember, if you’re interested in any of my future releases or to be notified of important book updates, my Mailing List Sign-up is at the top of the page.
