Week 46: Let Me Brag for a Moment

Let me Brag for a Moment? Bragging is the topic for this week? Oh, for Pete’s sake! This isn’t going to be easy. I’m not a bragger, per se, so how do I write on this topic? It’s easier for me to write about what I CAN’T brag about. I could mention my kids, but I have during this past year. There are no grandchildren to post pictures or talk about. I’m not a great cook. It’s true. You can get out of practice by not cooking often. I don’t bake when I’m the only one here to eat it.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance,

Here’s a good one: I could brag about my inner strength and the ability to persevere, but I believe we’ve covered those topics this year. Where does this leave me?

      Hmmm…

I try not to brag about my books, reviews, etc. I’ve posted reviews and Amazon Best Selling list placement before. I find when I do much bragging about my books, bad things happen, so I don’t make a habit of this.

I deleted the rest of the original post from this point on. Instead, as hard as it is to brag, I will brag about my ability to pick myself up at the bootstraps and survive. Seven years ago I didn’t know how I’d survive financially after leaving my job and moving across the state to live with my youngest son. Thank you, Jim.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance author, cowboys, bull ridersI admit, moving in with my son encouraged me to get serious about reaching for my dream. I published Howdy, Ma’am after struggling, for personal reasons, to write that book for over two years. It’s hard to write when your mind is in turmoil. In the end, the turmoil helped me to finish this book. It opened the door for me to continue writing western romance. I’m about to publish book number eleven. As soon as Finding Kimber is published, it’ll be my third book this year. Now, I’m proud to say I’m in my own apartment and comfortably taking care of myself. The point is, I picked myself up because I was determined to survive. These books contributed to that survival to this point. This is worth a little bragging to me.

Phew. This week’s topic is over. Can we move on now?

Hey, how about moving on with me to see what the other authors have to brag about because y’all know this is a BLOG HOP.

Heck, in reality, I think all of us authors, creatives, and everyone should be bragging about our accomplishments. We send our hearts out into the world every single day and are judged. Doesn’t that take some guts? Again, I think we might’ve covered ACCOMPLISHMENTS this year as well.

Enjoy your weekend. I can’t believe it’s Friday already.

    • #AmWriting 52 Week Blog Challenge~ Coloring Outside of the Lines (What Else is New?)

      Posted at 10:18 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on June 16, 2017

Ciao! This is week 24 in the #MFRWauthor 52 Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop. Welcome to another week.

This week’s topic is: If I Could Eat One Last Meal

Wow, this is a scary topic. I’m not sure I like it, either. For one thing, I don’t have what I’d call a “favorite meal,” so I’ll color outside of the lines a little this week.

If I have a choice of eating my last meal, it might mean I’m on death row or on my death bed. How depressing. Am I looking at this all wrong? On the flip side, maybe it means nothing more than I’d wake up one day and decide to eat my favorite meal because I could, but I’d pretend it was my last meal, so I’d choose something I’d like to eat. Hmm.

If I’m going to eat one last meal, I’m doing it up right. For this last meal, I picture myself in Italy. I love Italian food, so my last meal would begin with the real thing.

      First Stop:
First stop would be a winery in Tuscany to sample a glass of Chianti Classico. At this winery, we’d share the food you see in this video. Of course, they’d gift me a bottle to accompany me on my journey. “Mmm, delizioso, I say,” licking my lips. “Grazie.” How kind, right?

      Next stop:

I want an authentic Italian meal with an Italian family (who speaks a little English). I’m reminded of the movie Eat Pray Love or Under the Tuscan Sun. I don’t care if it’s risotto, spaghetti and meatballs, or a creamy pasta dish, and of course, bread. Or whatever the family comes up with for a full meal. As long as I have good company to help me enjoy the meal and the view with a glass of Prosecco before dinner and red or white wine with dinner, I’ll leave fat and sassy. But not before dessert.  🙂

Better yet, since I’m in my own dream here, I’d love to have dinner with, Velia Armano, my heroine in the Bull Rider Series, and her family. In three books, I’ve written enough family meals with the Armano/ McCutchen family, that I feel like I know them, and we’d all be comfortable with one another. We’d have fun together. Her Mamma Lidia can cook for me any time, but for fun we’ll invite my hero, Caulder, and his family, too. If I’m eating my last meal, I want some eye candy sitting across from me. Dolly McCutchen will of course bring her own delicious fare to the meal. Nothing is too good for her son, the professional bull rider. I know, I know. Mix a bull rider with a classy Italian? Yep! La vita è bella!

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Bull Rider Series new cover, western romance

      Bull Rider Series 3

      Reality:
Oh, that was so much fun. Now, to jump back into reality. If I could, or had to eat my last meal, I’d probably eat a roast beef dinner with carrots and potatoes all roasted together. Then we’d have apple pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert. With it would come memories of my growing up years with my grandma, parents, aunts and uncles, and brothers. I’d also have memories of Sunday dinners with my ex-husband and boys—my own family. In the end, the food would be a meal that left me with lasting memories with people I love.

I hope I didn’t blow this topic all to hell. This is a Blog Hop. Let’s see what the other participants chose for their “last meal.”

      Thanks for reading.

    • Week 23~ Whoa, That’s A Long Book! #MFRWauthor Blog Challenge

      Posted at 8:10 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on June 9, 2017

Here we are at Week 23 in the #MFRWauthor 52-Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop.

I missed last week because I had my youngest son and daughter-in-law’s belated wedding reception to prepare for, and my oldest son visited from California. They all kept me busy. Some of you might remember they were married in October with only parents at the wedding, so the reception was for EVERYONE! Later this year, they’ll have their Official/ Unofficial honeymoon in Ireland.

On to today’s topic: Word Count Matters… How Much? How Often?

I’m not sure how to respond to this topic about word counts. Let’s see what I can come up with for Word Count…How much? How Often?

      As the Author:

How Much: To me, a large word count matters in the cost of editing, formatting, and the cost of delivery in eBook format.

I have one eBook that has a delivery charge, which is Hey, Cowboy, Bull Rider Series #2, my largest book to date. In fact, I almost split it up into two books, but instead, I made Part One and Part Two within the same book. In revisions a few years later, I cut down the word count. The original word count was around 129,000 words. The revised edition is around 118.000. This was also the most expensive to publish regarding editing and formatting.

Tristan’s Destiny, Bonus Book #1.5 is my shortest book, a mid-size novel at almost 60,000 words, therefore, the cheapest to publish.

Word count matters when it comes to publishing houses. I don’t know if they all have word count guidelines, but the ones I’ve looked at do. Anthologies have word count guidelines whether they count full stories or excerpts only.

How Much: When I start a book, I have a word count in my mind, but I’m not disciplined enough, apparently, to adhere to it. Sure, I could stick to an outline or a strict guideline, but truthfully, I don’t want to. I did keep Tristan’s Destiny shorter for the most part, yet, it’s longer than I wanted. This book was easy to keep shorter because it was an addition to Cowboy Boss and his Destiny, so the characters, setting, etc., were all in place. Hmm… So was Hey, Cowboy. What is my excuse for the longer count then? I wrote the story that needed to be told.

mary j mccoy-dressel, western romance, bull rider series

How Often: It’s my goal to stay under 80,000 words in future books. After this one → My current Work in Progress (WIP) is longer than I wanted, and I’ve tried cutting, cutting, cutting, but to tell the story that needs to be told, I’ve gone way over the word count I wanted even at the top end. Many revisions are ahead of me on this book. I’m excited to see where it takes me since I wrote The End three days ago.

With a shorter word count on some books, I’ve heard authors mention reviews stating their books were too short or the reader wanted more.

      As the Reader:

I don’t buy books by word count. The cost factor matters sometimes. I catch myself looking at the size/ word count at a higher priced book, but if it’s a book I really want, cost or size doesn’t matter.

How Often: Once in a while I prefer a shorter book—a novella or mid-size. At Christmastime, I purchased some shorter holiday stories and read them quickly. I was happy with the stories because at the time all I wanted was a short read.

How often might also depend on an author writing a short-story or novella between larger works or as a prequel to a book or series. In my opinion, this benefits the author by keeping a steady flow of new books coming out. It benefits the reader because they get to read another book by one of their favorite authors. Readers might also want to sample an author’s writing, and picking up a free or discounted, shorter, book is a good introduction.

I don’t know if this prompt pulled out of me what was intended, but this is my input on the topic of Word Count Matters… How much? How often?

How about you, blog readers? What is your word count preference as a writer and reader? Does it matter?

This is a blog hop. Please visit the other participants to see what they have to say.

Have a nice weekend. Stay cool! Thanks for reading.

    • Writers Have Best Friends Too: Meet Maggie #MFRWauthor

      Posted at 9:16 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 3, 2017

Do you remember me? I’ve been absent. It seems I’ve lost my blogging mojo. I’m hoping by following the prompts for the #MFRWauthor 52-Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop, I can get back into the groove. Fifty-two weeks? Ah, I know, I know, this is week FIVE and I’m just beginning. See what I mean? No mojo. #WritersLife

The topic is “My Best Friend.” This is the perfect topic for me to get the blogging fire restarted.

      #MFRWauthor 52-Week Blog Challenge!

“I don’t have a way to get home from work tonight. Do you know of anyone who lives in ____?”

This is what I asked my factory boss the day I started my first real job. I was eighteen. Not long after, he pointed out another girl working on a machine, and told me she’d drive me home since she lived in the same city. What? Wow, what a godsend.

      Meet my best friend Margaret:

Later I learned my boss suggested to her to charge me X number of dollars for gas. Gladly! She never charged me, but I donated. Turns out, we didn’t live far from each other, but in a small town, that’s normal. We both got fired on the same day too. LOL. It also turned out Margaret went to work late a LOT, which meant so did I since I rode with her to and from work.

When we met at “the job” Margaret had a black VW Beetle called a Bug in those days. Wow, it Mary J McCoy-Dressel western romancewas cold in that vehicle in the winter. We hit it off right away, and became the best of friends. A few years later, I moved into her house as her roommate.

Maggie is what she wanted to be called later in life. I continue to call her Margaret. We are friends to this day. She was a tiny little thing. A beanpole is a good word. (Not so much today. Me neither.) I guess I was tiny at eighteen, too. Her hair was a pretty auburn. She has blue eyes. Her mother passed away when she was young, and she and her brothers and sisters were sent to live with different people. For a long time her siblings didn’t see each other. She has four brothers and two sisters.  We had gone to the same high school, though I hadn’t known her. I knew the girl who she lived with though–the daughter of her Godmother. Margaret is a couple years older than me.

Margaret was with me while I was in labor with my first son. She was terrified and ran out of the hospital room covering her ears. I remind her of that now and then just for the heck of it.  Afterwards, she swore never to have kids. But she had three miscarriages. I had another son. Then she had a son who was born so small, but today he is a healthy, handsome young man. She got divorced before her son was born. About four years later, she met a new guy, a Christian. She became a Christian. They got married on Valentine’s Day. She was at my baptism where my husband (ex now), boys, and I were all baptized together in the baptistery.

They had twin girls. Margaret always said, “I lost three babies, and then God gave me three babies.” I remember one Mother’s Day when her twins were young, I went to Mary J McCoy-Dressel western romancechurch with her for the Mother’s Day program, but I had one of the twins with me, so it was like I had a little toddler for a day. Margaret/Maggie has nine grandchildren! I don’t have any.

Margaret’s hobby is sewing and she’s great at decorating for parties. When she was feeling well, she did this for church weddings and graduations. She’d sew costumes for plays or programs, and her grandkid’s Halloween costumes, or clothes for their dolls. She and her husband used to take long motorcycle rides around the state of Michigan and surrounding states. My husband at the time had one, too, but I’d rather he had a horse instead of horsepower.

We had a lot of good times. Once, before either of us were married, we took a trip to Montreal to visit her sister and family. The trip there and back was so much fun. Neither of us spoke French! Try buying cigarettes when you don’t speak French. Yes, I was a smoker then. Cigarettes was probably the easiest thing to buy. Put your fingers up to your lips like you’re holding a cigarette. Universal?

I was a little wilder than her in those days, and on our way home from Montreal, we agreed on picking up two male hitchhikers in London who were about our age. I don’t remember where we dropped them off, but it was before we crossed the bridge to come back to Michigan. I don’t recommend picking up hitchhikers! We were lucky. They were nice.

Another time, I had moved to Missouri on my own. Another friend and I did this on the spur of Mary J McCoy-Dressel western romancethe moment. We hopped a ride with a couple guys we knew and off we went. Don’t worry, I left my mom a note. I came home once during that three-month period to get my car. The friend I had gone to Missouri with, her boyfriend, and I stayed with Margaret until we left for Missouri again. Three months later, I had everything I owned stolen. It was time for me to return home. Margaret flew to the St. Louis airport to drive back home with me. What a sweetie.

We both went on with our lives, and didn’t see each other often but that didn’t matter. For those of you who don’t remember what it was like to send letters in the mail, that’s how we communicated until we both got email.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel western romance

The last time I saw her in person was before I moved to where I am now. We would meet half way between where we lived and sit for hours in a restaurant to reminisce and catch up.

My best friend’s husband called me two days ago to tell me she was in the hospital. I wasn’t surprised, in fact, I had encouraged her to go to the ER. She’s had a tough year regarding her health. For months now, she has been miserable and doctors have scheduled needed tests so far into the future, that she lives in pain while they don’t seem concerned.

During the phone call he told me she went to her heart doctor again, and he sent her to the ER to get to the bottom of her illnesses. In addition, she has congestive heart failure, and had a defibrillator put in not long ago. She lives on oxygen now because of sarcoidosis in her lungs. Her husband said she has a whole team of doctors in the hospital to take care of her. She’s on an oxygen mask so I can’t really talk to her right now. He’ll keep me posted. In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy her friendship.

      mary j mccoy-dressel western romance

I’m sorry I don’t have actual pictures of my best friend. Any I had in the past would need to be scanned, but my photos are stored in tubs in who knows what closet. She removed photos from her FB page, which she doesn’t use anyway, so I can’t get them there. If I posted one of my favorites with us, it would be where we’re leaving my kitchen toward the living room. She is holding my first infant son and I am behind her carrying two cups of coffee. The best I could do was to use stock images to enhance my post.

Have a beautiful day.  Enjoy the weekend. Thanks for visiting.

      Mary~

UPDATE: After talking to my friend today, I learned that she is signing on with Hospice for when she will need them in the future. She is upbeat and positive. She said maybe she won’t need them for six months, or maybe never, so I like her positivity. Her lungs and heart are very weak right now, and she isn’t sure when she’ll get out of the hospital. Her oxygen level needs to be holding steady before they’ll send her home.

Second Update: Margaret passed away on April 22, 2017 at home with her family around her. She will be missed.

I never would have done this challenge on my own, but I borrowed the topic from my good friend David at http://barsetshirediaries.wordpress.com/ who actually borrowed the idea from someone he follows—and her Top Ten Favorite Movies Blog Challenge.

I’m addicted to sappy, romantic movies but once in awhile I have to throw in Bond or some other dramatic movie to shake me back into reality and make me stop crying from all the “sappy romantic movies”.

      SKYFALL

      • James Bond with Daniel Craig. We might as well add all the Daniel Craig James Bond movies here while we’re at it. Oh, and of course, Bond, James Bond Sean Connery. My son’s middle name is Sean. No connection. 😉 Maybe.

      HIGHLANDER

      • All of them. Weighing in on the last one though. Sean Connery played in the first one, maybe others. Loved the ponytail.

      GHOST

      • Still can’t watch without crying

      SOMEWHERE in TIME

      • Sigh. Takes place in my state on Mackinac Island—a beautiful island. What can I say? I stood at the same tree and whispered to my boyfriend, “Is it you?” It wasn’t him. This movie inspired me to write a time-travel romance.

      MOONSTRUCK

      • I love it for many reasons. The Italian family, the opera, Cher, bad ass Nicolas Cage, and everything else, too.

      UNDER the TUSCAN SUN

      • Everything. Diane Lane rocks in this movie. She rocked in Unfaithful, too. Let’s add that.

      CONSENTING ADULTS

      • This was a heart stopping psychological thriller/ mind game type movie.

      THE NOTEBOOK

      • This inspired many emotions, both good and bad. True love at its finest.

      DEAR JOHN

      • Bittersweet

      LETTERS to JULIET

      • I see a pattern here and it’s called Nicholas Sparks.

      <><>

If I could keep going, I’d add half of the Hallmark Channel movies. LOL Oh, dear me. No wonder I write romance with a dose of women’s fiction.
