    • It’s a Wrap! Hey, 2016, Don’t Let The Door… Haha Just Kidding

      Posted at 11:42 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 1, 2017

Before I get to a year-end wrap-up and optimisms for the new year, just let me say thanks to y’all for hanging around for another year. You’re more important to me than you know.

I started this blog in 2007 when I had no idea what I’d do with a blog other than write about my first two books. (out of print) What I do now is nothing like I did in 2007, and I’ve deleted most of those random posts. I also turned this into my website.

My headline is kind of deceiving. For the most part, 2016 wasn’t too bad. It was up and down like a sled on a snowy hill, but I think most of it was like sledding down…the fun part.

The last two months have been like walking back up the hill.

Before starting this post, I looked at my last years New Years wrap-up post. Here’s a short list from the end of last year. I basically have the same plan for 2017 with some additions.

      Plan from Last Year:

      • Stay healthy. This isn’t starting out very well already.
      • Love and hug my fur baby while I can. ❤  Some of you might remember that nearly two years ago, she was tentatively diagnosed with a brain tumor, and the veterinary neurologist said my son and I probably wouldn’t have a year with her. This coming March will be two years.
      • Publish! CHECK. Christmas at Love House
      • Publish!! CHECK. Whispers of Forever
      • Publish!!! I didn’t get three published, but I started writing a new book in 2016, while finishing Christmas at Love House and Whispers of Forever.
      • Write whatever new idea comes to my muse during the year. CHECK. I have two new book ideas.
      • Begin a new series in 2016. CHECK…done and published.
      • Try to stick to a blogging schedule. Semi-schedule? A couple posts a week? At least one? LOL HALF-ASS DONE.

NOTE: Part way through I decided not to post Short Snippet Saturday and Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse posts on a weekly basis. I did start my Meet Our Heroines mini-blog series, though. All I need now are more heroines! Beth is up next.  😉

In addition, this year I will add:

      • Read more books. I hate to admit my Goodreads number of “Books Read This Year,” sucked.
      • Publish! Publish! And, I’ll try to publish a surprise third book. One of the books to be published in 2017 is a real challenge to write.
      • Publish Lassoing the Last Dance in the first quarter.
      • Write more blog posts (Here we go again.)
      • Maybe give Pinterest a try.
      • Exercise & make better food choices. I know, I know…
      • Work on getting my books in print.

I haven’t put much thought into what else I’d add to my plan this year because I never planned on writing a wrap-up post this year. So far it looks like I’m going out on a limb, but I have a year, right?

      Not-So-Goods of 2016

My blood boils when I think of some of these.

      • With no warning, I had to scramble to find a new editor when I was on deadline. This trickled down to rescheduling my book formatter three times.
      • Vertigo. Yes, I have vertigo and I had to take a break from writing when I SHOULD have been writing. This was my first trip to the ER this year. My son thought I was having a stroke when he came over to take the dog out. Scary for both of us.
      • Hip and back pain. Lot’s of it.
      • One and two star reviews. Ugh, my stomach is still sick over them.

      Happy Days

At least the not-so-goods list is shorter than the happy days list. I’m sure I’ve missed some of the happy days. Honestly, being a full time writer is my dream come true, which will always be on the happy list.

      • A Wedding! My youngest son got married! I still haven’t seen the professional wedding pictures.

      • I have a terrific new editor. This was a very wise decision.
      • Blood pressure went down without meds.
      • Holiday shopping. Fun dot com shopping! ALEXA, what is…
      • Whispers of Forever reached #1 in Hot New Releases in Contemporary Western Fiction in UK and U.S. and stayed there for quite some time. As far as I know, it reached #3 in the same category in Best Selling Contemporary Western Fiction in UK and U.S. I don’t know if it went to #1.
      • Christmas Eve. Oh, oh. I’m not sure where this fits. My son came to pick me up for dinner and gift opening.  Mmm, dinner was delicious! Their house looked so pretty dressed for Christmas.

      Then…

      • I spent three and a half hours in the ER Christmas Eve. This means my son and daughter-in-law also spent three and a half hours in the ER Christmas Eve. My finger was crushed and split open from a knuckle to the nail. Do not sit on chairs that are already broken. Do not do this. They eventually collapse. It’s possible that your hand will be between the floor and the chair when this happens. I’ll spare you seeing the front side of the finger unwrapped.

      splint

On top of all this, I wrote this whole post with stitches and a splint on my pinky finger! Do you know how many keys are used by the pinky finger? Including using the shift key for each new sentence and then some?  Oh, well.

Here we go into another brand new year, which brings me to the same quote I shared last year. But, hey, it still fits, huh? Have a fabulous new year!

How about you? Do you have a plan for the new year? How’d last years plan work out for you?

For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
      ~T.S. Eliot, “Little Gidding”

Hi, Folks! Not long ago, Jacquie Biggar shared my book, Christmas at Love House: A Bittersweet Interlude. The other day, she shared my newest release, Whispers of Forever: Mending Christmas. Well, to me, this is Inspiration for my Muse. Thanks again, Jacquie!

Hop on over to visit Jacquie and see what she has up on her site today. My book was shared on Thanksgiving Day, but I didn’t want to bother y’all with promo on that day. Jacquie is a U.S.A. Marketing For Romance Writers.org, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romanceI’ve been cyber-traveling! Today I’m over at Romance Lives Forever Blog. This blog was created by Kayelle Allen, who is the founder of Marketing For Romance Writers.org. I think I’ll be here on December 3rd, too, but I’m not sure if that is an error.

Yep, you got it. Today at #RLFblog I’m showcasing the same book. I wouldn’t mind having you visit. You can see who my favorite book hero is. Not my own, darn it.   🙂 Oooh, but I probably couldn’t choose my own. It was hard enough to choose another one. Guess what? He isn’t a cowboy! But, he probably ended up with a cowboy hat sooner or later.

I won this award once when I was a guest at Romance Lives Forever. Last month I had a mention as one of the top five bloggers of the month. Goodness, but I’ve done a lot of “tooting” my own horn today. I’m sorry.  I hope I don’t lose y’all for blabbing this much about myself. I embarrassed myself. *grin*

    • Meet the Heroines: Gorgeous and Feisty Brenna Page from Heartbreak’s Reward

      Posted at 8:26 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on April 18, 2016

Introducing Brenna Page from Heartbreak’s Reward.

sunset sky, silhouette of cowgirl sitting, knee up, arm leaning over knee, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance Blog post Meet the Heroine series

What can I say about this Midwest girl? Brenna came from Iowa City, Iowa. How does she end up in “small town” Canyon Junction, AZ with the heat, dust storms, and monsoons? In order to save Chloe, her teen sister, from herself she accepted a job here. Brenna and Chloe both needed a fresh start—

Model Portrayal: Jax from Period Images

      Brenna says,

This town’s full of damn cowboys and mountains.

Well, without that damn mountain, she might not have met Jase.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance, Heartbreak's Reward

Model portrayal: Jax and Grigoris- models.

Oh, boy, Brenna is a girl after my own heart. Why? It’s easy… Jase Carlson. Dang, he’s HOT!

      Heartbreak's Reward, Mary J McCoy-Dressel

      Some facts about Brenna:

      • She nurturing.
      • Quick-tempered
      • Witty
      • Loving
      • Heartbroken
      • Spunky (The spunkiest of all my heroines to date.)
      • She’s one of two of the youngest of my heroines to date. (31) Minus Chloe, of course.
      • Target practice is her hobby.
      • She takes no crap from a particular hot-headed cowboy.
      • She drives a red Mustang.
      • Brenna would love to be a part of a family. So would Chloe, but she’s too stubborn to know she needs one.

Since you met Brenna, you have to meet Chloe, too. She insists.

      Chloe 2 resized 2

      Model portrayal: Image from Dreamstime.com

Chloe wants nothing to do with Brenna or Arizona.

      • She’s sixteen, or as she says, “seventeen” since she’s nearing her seventeenth birthday.
      • Stubborn as already stated
      • Chloe thinks cowboy’s are ridiculous. (Haha, the joke’s on her.)

I’d rather not give more away about Chloe. This sassy little girl really grew on me as the story went along. I admit to shedding tears for these sisters.

I’m thrilled you stopped by today. Thanks for reading!

You can read a short excerpt on the Heartbreak’s Reward page. Or a sample from the book HERE.

    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: Quote 3

      Posted at 7:05 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on April 5, 2016

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books

Waving! It sure has been a busy week in my world with writing book four in the Double Dutch Ranch Series, getting together images for a new cover, approving a new cover, editing Christmas at Love House before it goes to the editor, putting up a new blog post for my Meet Our Heroines mini blog series, and many other jobs that go along with being an author. Oh, and a pleasant breakfast out with friends who make me leave my laptop home. 🙂

Isn’t it supposed to be spring in my area of the world? It snowed this weekend and the temperatures plummeted to the low 20s F. One of my cousins who lives “Up North” had eight inches of new snow. I had a dusting but more stayed on my car than on the ground. But, I did get a brand new heating/ AC unit in my apartment. Just in time for the cold to come back! Funny how that works.

By the way, while we’re all here, I’ll take this time to say “Thanks” to those of you who voted for Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord in The Romance Reviews Readers’ Choice Awards. Unfortunately, I didn’t receive enough nominations to move to the final round, and it does feel bad when you’re so close. Maybe next year, I tell myself. I probably won’t do it again, ask that is, but if I do, please don’t hold it against me.

So, a little inspiration for the muse sounds like a good idea today because my muse and I need to get a book finished. Let’s get with the program then, right? You’ll find this quote on my About Page. It’s been there forever, and has been posted as far back as my old website. That means I really love it. (And I agree with it, too.)

Maybe your muse will like it too. Enjoy this short but sweet quote.

Perhaps imagination is only intelligence having fun. ~George Scialabba

Thanks for stopping by on my Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse Day. Have a fabulous week.

    • Meet the Heroine: Velia

      Posted at 11:15 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 18, 2016

It seems I talk about my heroes more than I do my heroines. Maybe because I write some books with a hero focus POV, and I admit, they’re doggone hot. The heroines make the guys who they are as you see them. I love my heroines like daughters or a best friend.

sunset sky, silhouette of cowgirl sitting, knee up, arm leaning over knee, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance Blog post Meet the Heroine series

I have decided to do a small series featuring my lady stars. 🙂 Part of my tagline reads …And the Proud Women Who Stand by Their Side. Their side? Yes. Those gentleman cowboys have just a touch of bad.

      Howdy, Ma'am, Bull Rider Series

Let’s begin with Velia Armano from the Bull Rider Series. She was my first heroine in the most recent years. She’s a thirty-two year old photographer when the series begins. One day, a bull rider strutted into her shop catching her…and her heart, off guard.

She had been living in a self-appointed exile for the past six months, but those sexy flame-blue eyes drew her in as he said, “Howdy, ma’am…”

I love Velia for her confidence, strength, and determination. She had recently gone through a rough time and no longer takes any “bull” from anyone. This didn’t come easy because she had hurdles to overcome.

I had to ask myself– What kind of heroine would a bull rider want? Caulder wasn’t a one-night-stand kind of guy. Hey, he could use some extra publicity after being away from the circuit for a while! Bingo. In walked Velia, but in this case, in walked the cowboy. A reviewer pictured the character of Velia in a movie played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. I couldn’t agree more.

      Velia has many faces.

      • Former travel photographer. Now, travels the circuit photographing bull riders.
      • She became a business owner in Tucson, Arizona.
      • She’s the only daughter in a close-knit Italian family.
      • A sister to two siblings.
      • She’s a cousin to a younger set of cousins.
      • She’s downright sexy without even trying. When she gets sexy on purpose–

        Image: Romance Novel Covers.

        Yahoo, look out bull rider.

      • If you’re a guest in her home, expect to be catered to and waited on.
      • Cooking is something she’s always done and loves doing it.
      • There is a lot more to Velia, but it’s best I don’t give away too much about her. She wouldn’t like that and she carries a concealed weapon. It runs in the family.

Do any of you have a question for Velia?

See how Velia got her name in this post.

Her feelings were still a little raw, but she granted me an Interview here.

Meet the other heroines at the link for Meet Our Heroines.

Readers of my Double Dutch Ranch Series know my setting is a fictitious town called Canyon Junction in Arizona, though I’ve mentioned real surrounding towns in my books. Well, doggone! Guess what? Other people live in this town, so why not give them a book?

In previous DD Ranch books, some of these characters have been mentioned briefly as friends of our ranchers–Tristan, Jase, and Dane Carlson. Some townspeople slated for future books will be new.

I love my fictitious little town that sits at the base of the real Superstition Mountains, so needless to say, I can’t part with Canyon Junction and the people who live there.

    • Thirteen for Thursday: 13 Dog Antics

      Posted at 11:44 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 11, 2016

      dog antics blog

Fur baby mom and pops understand the love we share with our furry little family members. Mine happens to be a dog. Kasha McCoy is an Australian Shepherd mix and the best dog on earth. 🙂 I know– All of us fur parents think our baby is the best, and they are to us. Today I decided to post some of her dog antics. I told her I was telling on her and she gave me that, “Talk to the paw” look.

My dog really is my son’s dog, but I lived with him for the past four years, and I consider her mine since we’ve been together almost 24/7 for those years. My son fell in love with a girl who has cats. Did I mention this dog doesn’t like cats? Some of these antics are from the past. She has mellowed out this past year, and so far since she and I have moved, she hasn’t gotten into anything. She goes through her days sleeping, eating, following me from room to room, and she looks forward to walks.

      1. She came into my son’s life when she was ten months old–a rowdy shelter dog. They told him at the shelter that she got out of a six-foot high fenced area. I fell in love upon the first sight of her.

      2. In her early days, she’d chew anything that looked inviting such as TV remote controls and watches.

      3. A three pound half-frozen turkey breast set out to thaw. She ate the whole thing, even the netting. This was my fault because I forgot to put it out of reach when I left. I called Poison Control. She was okay.

      4. She loves bread and will steal the bag if she can get to it. (Lessons learned. Now it’s stored out of sight, or at least out of reach.)

The scariest thing she’s ever done:
      5. Turned the gas stove on. Once again, she went for the bread on the back of the stove. She somehow must have pushed in and turned the knob at the same time. The house was filled with the smell of gas when I came home. Thank God there was no flame. I was terrified and rushed around opening all the doors and windows, and took us both outside. After that, I removed the knobs from the stove unless I was cooking. One day I had this short conversation with my son…

Son: “Mom, where are the stove knobs?”
Me: “I put them on the back of the sink so she can’t turn the stove on anymore.”
Son: “What do you think she’s going to do, put them back on.” Yep. That’s my boy.

      6. Second scariest thing… In the beginning, she’d get out of her kennel when he went to work. After twice of doing this, and getting her paw caught, my son gave up on the kennel so she didn’t hurt herself trying. She can’t stand to be in a closed area. Since she is a rescue dog, we have no way of knowing what she went through in her previous home to make her hate it so much.

      7. Prior to the incident above: Our little darlin’ ate my son’s Easter basket candy. It was on the counter on top of something else, and she got out of her kennel, climbed on it, and got the basket. Luckily, he had removed the chocolate. (I admit, I made a basket for my adult son.)

      8. Gets into bathroom trash to punish us when we go away (Now the trash is kept under the sink in the vanity, but she hasn’t done this in a long time.)

      9. She frowns when I tell her I have to leave. Yes, I can see the frown. Even her body language shows her displeasure at being alone. She leaps to the couch and won’t look at me. When I come home with any form of dog food or treats, she knows which bag to look in.

      10. Kasha2Gets a new toy out and takes it to the person who bought it for her. My son’s girlfriend brings her toys, and when she comes to visit, Kasha digs through her toys and finds the one given to her by the girlfriend and takes it to her to play. She did this with my son the last time he came over, and took him the toy he brought her for Christmas. (This pink star toy was from the girlfriend.

      11. She does not like squirrels. At the other house, they’d sit in the tree and chatter at her. Once, she caught one, but I rescued it.

      nuts

      12. Before I moved in, she broke out the inside window pane trying to get to the mailman. She was okay. The mailman left a note telling my son. Today, she lies on the couch without a fuss and watches the mail lady fill up the row of mailboxes. We’ve even walked by her and Kasha pays her no mind.

      13. She’s a herder dog and thinks she has to herd all the animals she sees on TV, by barking and running up to the TV, sometimes jumping at it. She’ll turn around to make sure I saw her do a good job.

Now, she lives with me and has adjusted to our new living arrangement, but I know she misses my son. My apartment complex has large wooded areas surrounding the place, so she seems to love our daily walks.

She is ill with a suspected brain tumor and takes steroids, but she is filled with determination and spunk. She’s twelve years old and suffers from the effects of aging, too. I will cherish each day I have with her.

When I took this picture below, I pictured her saying, “Mom, make this deep snow go away.” But, not long after, I realized she was ill and her whole personality had changed. Two days on her medication from the neurological vet, she had become her old self again. The vet told us we might have her for a year and the medication was a band-aid, not a cure. This month is a year since I had noticed the changes.

Note: As a tribute to my loving fur baby, I have given her a role in an upcoming book.

Thank you for stopping by today. Have a fabulous upcoming weekend.

    • Short Snippet Saturday: Home

      Posted at 2:12 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 30, 2016

This week I decided to do a snippet from the third book in the Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight, a contemporary western romance series. Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord features the youngest brother at the ranch. I hope you enjoy the short snippet. Dane is my Army Ranger slash #Cowboy and a hero who stole my heart. This is from his mom’s point of view.

Judy went to the stove and poured herself a cup of tea. “Can I get you something to eat, son?” It was almost like a dream to have him in her kitchen. Closing her eyes a moment, she popped them back open to see if he was really there.

Dane already went to the fridge and took the flyer for pizza from the magnet. “Let’s get this.” He removed his phone from his pocket and ordered. When he put the phone down, he picked up his Duffle bag. “Same room?”

“For goodness sakes, you have the same room. It’ll always be your room.” She detected that smirk. He teased. At least he still had that tease in him.
She watched him leave. From the back, it looked like nothing was wrong. A handsome soldier decked out in an Army service uniform. He had all his limbs, and that was good enough for her. “Dane?”

He glanced over his shoulder from the doorway and lifted his chin in question.

“Your girl? She never came. Were you able to get in touch with her?” Dane didn’t like talking much about his personal life, but his personal life had been the military for years now—meant to be private. Maybe he didn’t have an issue with non-military life.

Now on to the reason for Saturday’s post. Here we go with another Short Snippet Saturday. Meet Jake and Beth.

My heroine decided to play hooky from her job today. Our hero was right there to accommodate her, although it was his idea in the first place. Are you surprised? Unedited version.

Once they got on pick up truckthe highway, Beth pulled her jeans from the bag, unsnapped her dress pants, and slipped them off.

Jake almost lost control of the truck when it ran off the road. “Girl, you need to warn me before you do something like that.”

Beth chuckled and sat there in her red bikini panties before pulling on her jeans. “You didn’t have to look.”

      “What if I hadn’t?”

“Humph!” She pulled her jeans on, giving him a show she hadn’t expected to give red underwear 2him. Sweat beaded on his face. She removed his hat and fanned him with it. “Down boy.”

He straightened his back and glanced out of the corner of his eye to the opening at the top of her shirt. Beth nonchalantly pulled her blouse together, but she wouldn’t button it. “What are you trying to see before you wreck your truck, rancher?”

“Tell me one thing and I’ll keep my eyes on the road. What color is your bra? Does it match your red bikini underwear?”

      “What bra?”

Jake’s truck hit the shoulder of the road. He laughed so hard he choked, and then he coughed until his eyes watered. “That’s the girl I remember. Let it all loose, baby.”

    • Short Snippet Saturday: Dane

      Posted at 12:12 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on October 17, 2015

Here we are! Another weekend. College football weekend in my neck of the woods. Brr2Two of our big rival colleges are playing each other and this should be good. Tailgating will be cold. This was the first day with frost on the car windows. My cousin in the upper part of the state had three inches of snow. EKK!

Enough blabbering. Today is also Saturday so you know what that means. Yes, you got it! While doing my Wednesday thing on Twitter this week, I came across a snippet for today in my newest release, an Amazon #1 Best Seller: Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord.

From the Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight, a #Western #Romance series with gentlemen #Cowboys (with a touch of bad) and the heroines who know how to handle them.)

Dane is my military cowboy, and the youngest Carlson brother. He’s home on leave and not necessarily by choice:

Dane woke with a start and sat up in bed. His heart pounded when he didn’t have a gun. One deep breath led to another. Normal breathing didn’t come easy. Normal? What is normal? No gun. No Army. Not a damn thing was normal. His throat clenched as he tried to swallow while his gut twisted.

A warm hand touched his back. Closing his eyes again, he remembered where he was…at her place. Safe. “I’m sorry to wake you,” he whispered in the dark. His arm draped over a bent knee. Think a minute. Breathe.

“Did you have a nightmare?” She sat up and wrapped her arm around his shoulder. “Don’t be sorry. I’ve read about PTSD.”

That word made him cringe. “I don’t have PTSD. Not a nightmare. I just woke up. Please don’t mention that again. It’s a habit… Wake up to check surroundings.”

“All right, but you’re safe here.” She laid her head against his shoulder and smoothed her hand over his arm.

Dane pressed his head against hers. “The nights might get worse,” he said, hesitating before going on. “Especially when there are nightmares…”

More about this book can be found HERE.

      Side note:

(You might also remember the struggle I had naming this book.)

Two or more new books are coming in 2016. If interested in being notified of new releases or important book updates, my mailing list can be found here. Thank you in advance. 🙂

Have a fantastic weekend. GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!
