    • Seasoned Romance: Young at Heart Heroes and Heroines

      Posted at 11:54 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on July 26, 2019
Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Seasoned Romance Blog Post, senior couple, beach, man drawing a heart in the sand with a stick

TODAY I’M POSTING something completely different from a regular Friday post. Writing books—romance books—featuring mature couples because I have a book coming up with a mature heroine. I suggest pouring a beverage if you plan to stick around. This is long. I wrote this post at least a month ago to fill in for a Friday post. Today is the day.

When I say “couple” as female and male in this post or on my blog, I do so because it is what I write so it fits my blog. We all know romance and falling in love can happen to anyone and everyone no matter who you love.

I’ve been researching the genre called Seasoned Romance. Here’s an example.

Some websites write that the characters in this genre/sub-genre are over forty and up. Some even say thirties.

If thirty is the case, all of my books are Seasoned Romances because none of my main characters have been under thirty except for Natale in Christmas at Love House, A Bittersweet Interlude.

She isn’t really a main character but an important secondary character because the story is partially about her too.

Now, at this point in my multiple series, the heroines and heroes are in their mid-thirties and beyond. My brand-new upcoming series hero in book one is forty. His sister is older than him by two years. There are three younger brothers.

In searching Amazon, numerous books came up under Seasoned Romance. I noticed some “sponsored products” or “advertised products” showed a short description specifying the main characters as forty in those books.

I guess I write seasoned romance. Who knew? Ha-ha.

I’m mentioning this because my upcoming heroine is in her sixty’s. That’s right Double Dutch Ranch readers. Through the progress of the series, Judy Carlson has slipped into a new decade and a few years beyond. She’s far from old. To avoid the idea that she may be lonely, she distracts herself with her grandkids, the horses, and the ranch because she still pines for her first love, Bill Carlson.

Nonetheless, Judy discovers much about herself while rediscovering what she’s missed for well over a decade. This lady is not beyond eyeing a hard body, or a worn ranch foreman’s strong arms from tossing bales of hay for a lifetime, or sexy eyes on a distinguished looking man with salt and pepper hair.

My goodness, she isn’t dead! Once accepting it, she’s thrilled about her new internal and external revelations.

My debacle is in questioning whether I can call this book a Seasoned Romance because my cowboys get a say throughout the story in their POVs.

I can’t write her story, this story, without letting her family talk and share their own thoughts, and they have many. It’s because of their ages and their role in the story, that made me think I couldn’t call this book a Seasoned Romance.

Research has told me it’s okay.

This one is about Judy as the main character, but they all have their own little stories with updates about their lives going on—in their words.

However, I don’t consider my other books to be Seasoned Romance and haven’t promoted them as such. Maybe I should.

A year ago or more, when I mentioned writing this book to a woman some years younger than me, but still a senior, she told me she could never read about an older couple and especially an older couple having sex, so she wouldn’t buy a book in my character’s age group—my sixty-some-year-old heroine. She’s an author of steamy romance, so she isn’t against reading or writing love scenes, but this thing called Seasoned Romance would not appeal to her. I bet she isn’t alone in her thinking.

      Let me tell you…

Like Judy, I had become a dating senior woman with two men younger than me, and then I became a wife. Honey, I’m not dead or blind, either.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Seasoned Romance Blog, writing in the sand Marry Me?

No, I didn’t date them at the same time! One relationship lasted for five years. The other one I married six months after meeting. I’ve lived through my own seasoned romances.

      Regroup. Ah, there we go…

I can’t speak for all, but women in Judy’s age group and older, still crave passion and desire and have a lot to give in that department. Match that up with a lifetime of experience while still having the ability to keep on learning. I learned some new things. Whew! We’ll stop there.

I hope this leaves you–dear Double Dutch Ranch reader and new readers–curious as to how I handled sensuality in the book—referring to Judy, of course. I wondered how I’d write it too. Once I followed the characters wants and needs, I had no problem.

Her sons are still hot-blooded-sexy and their heroines are sexual and sensual even in their late thirties and forties. This doesn’t change in my upcoming book within their POVs. I can’t believe I said “even” in their late thirties and forties. To me, that age group is not…uh, um…for lack of a better word, senior.

I use the words steamy, sexy, sexual, and sensual, but I don’t write erotic romance.

To some, my books are more sensual than they’d like. To others, it isn’t enough. So, I write what is right for me and my characters.

Most of you following my blog don’t read romance, or my romance, I should say. For those of you who do read romance whether sweet, steamy, or anything in between, would you read a romance about a couple in their sixties and beyond? Maybe, like me, you wouldn’t know until you read one.

Sand Writing I love you, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, seasoned romance blog post,

      Any thoughts?

Yes, even though I do LOVE COWBOYS and the whole western environment, I’ll read other books. Most of my Kindle and iPad books are western unless I have purchased books by fellow author friends who write different genres of contemporary romance.

I, as a writer, still need to slip into other worlds now and then.

At the time I read those books, I never gave a thought to writing a seasoned romance until readers asked me to write about older couples. It wasn’t called seasoned then. Maybe mature romance? Unfortunately, in a search for mature romance, what came up wasn’t what I had expected. <eye roll>

You might find this website interesting. It features Author Nan Reinhardt. Is Seasoned Romance a Real Thing? Coincidentally, Jacquie Biggar, hosted Nan Reinhardt on her blog today.

I have read a couple of Nan Reinhardt’s books and thoroughly enjoyed them.

A couple of the authors at these links might be members of Marketing for Romance Writers group, but we’ve never corresponded. I came across these links while searching the topic of seasoned romance and recognized names, but I didn’t post the links because of recognizing them, but because it gave you a couple sites to take a peek at if you’re curious. Maybe you’ll take a chance on reading a seasoned romance with mature couples.

Maybe when Judy’s book comes out, you’ll take a chance on reading one of mine.

UPDATE: The two books mentioned in this post are now published and can be found on their own pages by clicking the LINK below. Judy’s book will be available this spring 2020.

Find information about Judy’s upcoming book on the Double Dutch Ranch Series Page.

Howdy! It’s a record-breaking heat wave where I am along with much of the country.  🔥  We’re used to heat but not this high. Stay cool! I don’t remember if I ever experienced 107 degree temps before, but once while visiting Sacramento, CA, it was 104. I noticed! We had a storm roll through last night and many are out of power. They need prayers to get it connected. Another one is expected today. Recently I told my oldest who lives in California that I’d probably move there in a couple years. I guess Mother Nature is breaking me in and preparing me for the summer temps.

THIS MONTH, I’m featuring Whispers of Forever: Mending Christmas, a Second Chance Romance—the first book in the Spin Off to the Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight. Wow, a featured book I haven’t mentioned yet this month. Shame on me. Bad blogger!

      I’ll change that today.

It isn’t necessary to save Whispers of Forever for Christmastime reading because it doesn’t only revolve around the holiday. It revolves around two people and a young boy getting a second chance.

I love this book, but where did I get the idea?

Simple answer. From a song that interrupted that “almost asleep” stage. I grabbed my phone and jotted down the idea, but once I started writing, it went in a different direction.

Who doesn’t deserve a second chance?

Beth and Jake do. Especially when it should’ve been them all along. Against their will, they had been ripped apart from each other. Thirteen years later, Beth moves back to Canyon Junction, our small-town setting. Jake never left, except for those few years after Beth moved—the times he doesn’t like to remember—the times when he attempted to drown himself in a bottle or kill himself as a reckless cowboy with a passion for saddle bronc riding.

The snippet doesn’t feature Beth, but in the book, by now, they had unexpectedly come face-to-face since she had returned. This short piece deals with Jake and his child.

      Short Snippet:

After feeding and watering their horses, they came in from the barn. Trace got a bath. Then Jake took a shower while his boy ate ice cream in front of the TV. He stood at the mirror in the small bathroom downstairs about to put shaving cream on his face.

A shattering scream ripped from Trace’s throat, “Daddy! Daddy? Dad…”

What the hell? Jake dropped his razor and rushed into the living room. “What’s the matter? Why are you watching the news, bud?” He glanced at the screen. Breaking News. “What happened?”

Trace stood in front of the TV pointing. He didn’t say anything more, but his chin dimpled and quivered.

Jake’s feet had been knocked out from under him, and he dropped to the sofa. Blood drained from his face, and it all dropped to his feet. His head spun, and he was unable to believe what he saw. Oh, my God. “Come here, T.J.” He reached out to bring him close, to hold him, to embrace him.

“A plane crash. Is it Austin’s plane?” he asked, close to hysteria. “It is his! Dad?” He read out loud, “Piper PA32,” as information scrolled across the bottom of the report. Trace turned toward his dad, his face wet with tears, his body trembling.

“Here, let’s change the channel.” Jake’s phone rang before he got the remote. He lost all focus, but his gaze couldn’t leave the TV screen. What was left of the plane looked like the one in the picture he had held in his hand earlier, and he let the phone ring.

Trace answered before Jake could grab it, “Mommy, is it you?” He held the phone out to his dad with a terrified blankness in his eyes. “Grandpa Bill wants to talk to you.”

Jake took the phone. Everything moved in slow motion from that point on. “Hello…”

      End of excerpt.

Sorry for the cliffhanger ending here.  😁  You’ll never find a cliffhanger ending at the end of one of my books.

      FindingKimber_2021_MED

      Kimber lives with a secret.

Tressa Garnett’s secret began the night she’d intended on turning in her criminal boyfriend to the cops. She’s college educated and an intelligent woman, but she never saw his betrayal coming.

      Her plan backfired. His succeeded.

Now, because of him, she has an image behind her eyes she’ll never forget.

The event that night, took her away from everything and everyone she loved.

Due to this betrayal, Tressa Garnett changed her identity and her appearance in order to survive and make a new life as Kimber Kay Sinclair.

Kimber had been employed as a traveling credit union auditor, so she was used to rules. However, her new words to live by are: Tell no one. Trust no one. Follow the rules, follow the rules, follow the damn rules and you’ll survive!

Swept away from Oregon to a rundown ranch in a small town in Arizona, she’s starting over. The only thing making her life bearable is two horses that remained with the ranch, and the quaint little adobe home on the property.

Zach Bryson, the ranch foreman hired to help her, and show her the ropes, so to speak, is nothing more than a hot-headed smartass too handsome for his own good…and too nosy for her liking.

Coming in contact with Zach before her identity change, makes keeping her secrets twice as hard.

Uncomfortable around him, she watches each step she takes, each word, to prevent from triggering his memory of her. Except for that one time…

She lives in fear of being found out, but she’s a fighter. Her life depends on her not being a quitter.

      She’s friendly but careful.

      Tressa loathes living a lie.

She tries to find Kimber and forces Tressa out of her life.

Kimber wants to be a mom and have her own family one day.

She misses her parents and younger sister so badly and sometimes wants to throw her hands up at this new life and return to them.

Kimber fears anyone she befriends will also become a target if she is found out, so she keeps a tall wall around herself.

However, soon after, and doing her best to acclimate to this new life, the Carlson family from the Double Dutch Ranch befriend her. Kimber’s leery and untrusting at first though she’s willing to give friendship a try.

Against her will, she envies their happy family when she is so alone.

As if she didn’t have enough problems, she finds it hard to resist Zach’s cocky charm. She doesn’t know if she can ever trust a man again–especially when her ruggedly handsome foreman keeps digging for answers. Not to mention, his shoulders are damn strong and desirously comforting.

Kimber wakes each day with one question. Will this be the day she gets a bullet in her head.

Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight™ #4

To set it up for you:

Previously, Randy and Roxanne shared a long-distance relationship. Roxanne had cut it off after a year with no explanation, and their mutual friends, Nora and Tristan remained tight-lipped. Now, Roxanne has moved back to Canyon Junction™ without telling Randy. His heart has never healed from losing her, but when he finds out she moved back, he can’t stay away.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western romance, series romance, book cover, cowboy, barn, two horses

He slowed down a bit when he neared her house. Indeed, her pickup sat in the driveway. A decal of sparkly red cowboy boots had remained in the rear window. He got out and went to the other side for the basket, but now the idea seemed silly again. He left it. Albeit, he trudged up the steps, knocked on the door. Hoped for the best. Sighed. To his surprise, a guy opened. Well, hell, this is uncomfortable.

“Yeah?” was all the stern-faced, square-jawed guy said when he pushed open the outside door.

“Is Roxanne around tonight?” He held eye contact with the man, having no clue who he was. Of all people, it better not be her ex-husband. If so, Randy might deck him right there just for the reason of all the things he had done to Roxanne in the past. Then he’d be disappointed in her for having him here. Was this guy her so-called story?

      “I’ll get her. Hold on.”

All he did was yell for her, not go get her. Asshole.

She emerged with widened eyes and a gasp. “R-Randy.”

He tapped his heel against the porch and his breath caught when she appeared. He was right about her hair. It was darker blonde than it used to be. Straight now, not wavy like before. Her eyes remained fixed on him as she stood there. Spectacular light blue eyes. A long skirt with vertical stripes looked great on her, making her appear taller than he’d remembered.

Finding his voice, he began, “I stopped by to welcome you back to Canyon Junction.”

She turned to whoever was inside, “I’ll be right in.” Roxanne stepped out the door, waited a moment, then strode to the glider to take a seat. “I’m rather shocked to see you here, Randy.”

Had she limped? “I bet. You didn’t tell me you were coming back. Hard to hide things in a small town.” Gulping, he nodded toward the door. “It’s not like you had to let me know. I’ll take off. I didn’t know you had company.” He stepped down two steps and removed keys from his pocket. “You take care, Roxanne. Nice to see you again.”

      “Randy? Wait.”

He peered at her while trying to get his heart back in its place. A painful look appeared on her face—something between a scowl and shooting daggers. He gripped the handrail and didn’t make an attempt to move. Was she about to lambaste him? Well, he had a few things to throw right back.

In a soft voice, she asked, “Will you come back and have a seat?”

Randy nodded toward the door again. “Maybe another time if you don’t mind.”

“That’s my cousin inside. He’s always been like a brother to me, and he drove my vehicle here from Broken Arrow while I flew to arrive early. He was here when I got back from Nora’s tonight. I mentioned Brett to you before.”

Yeah, so long ago that he’d forgotten. He went up the steps and took a seat beside her. Her subtle yet sensual fragrance brought back the memory of her in his arms. So much so that he wouldn’t mind taking her into his arms and closer to her perfume. “Where’s your cousin live?”

“Near my dad’s new condo outside of town, but he was kind enough to help me out by doing the driving himself. Tonight, he’ll be staying and helping out tomorrow here at the house. There’s so much work to do to make it mine.” She glanced down at clasped hands in her lap.

Tension lay thick between them. Something was different about her. Roxanne looked frail, downtrodden. He wanted to hold her, or at least pick up those clasped hands. “My place too. It is how it is, and I don’t know what would make it mine. I see it as my parent’s home.”

“The Circle D Ranch was theirs a long time ago.” Her hands wrung, then she clenched them together again. He must’ve made her nervous, or angry. “Well, Nora’s mom, Sandy, was nice enough to sell this house to me once she realized she wasn’t able to move back home from her son, Brody’s. She was happy it was me who bought it. Everything worked out.”

She stared at him straight on, a slight tilt to her head. It made his heart race even faster because she was in the right position to be kissed. “It’ll be a good place for you.” He shifted sideways and used his foot to make the glider move in a slow glide. He lowered his hand over hers in her lap. Her soft skin felt nice next to his, but her hands were cold. “I better go. It was great to see you again. Maybe I’ll see you around town, huh?”

Her throat tightened then her lips parted. Had she wanted to say more? His own words didn’t come out right away. He stood. “Have a nice night.” She took his hand, pulling on it quite hard to stand. “You okay, Roxanne?”

A car driving past grabbed her attention for a moment. “Yeah, sure.” She clenched his hand tighter and made eye contact, their gazes holding beneath a muted sky. “Nice seeing you again, too. I suspect we’ll see each other around. Small town living, you know.”

“Yup. Rox?” He hesitated and couldn’t, shouldn’t ask why she seemed so different. “Night.” Randy rushed off the porch and got in his truck. He breathed like he had run a mile down the road. She stood there with both hands on the railing. Was it that simple for her to just say good-bye without as much as a reason? Shit. He opened the door, grabbed the fruit basket from the seat, and took it up the steps. He set it on the glider since she didn’t seem prepared to take it herself. “Night.”

Down the steps and back at his truck, he shifted into gear and pulled out of the driveway feeling more like an idiot than anything else. On the way home, he observed the mountain standing in the glow of the moon, which had slipped out from an opening in the clouds. Maybe love wasn’t meant for a man like him.

long stem red rose laying on sheet music, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance, Blog Post Short Snippet Saturday

Hi, everyone. Technically, it’s still Saturday, and after all day of busy work, I remembered this post had been ready to go. I should change my topic to Occasional Short Snippet Saturday. This isn’t something I post each week. Here’s a snippet for my featured book this month.

Featuring one of my books in my website header is something I recently started. I don’t know where I got the idea, but it’s fun making the banners. If things work out like I hope they will, by December, I should have enough books to have filled 2019, with one left over, starting with Jase and Brenna in Heartbreak’s Reward.

Jase was introduced as Tristan’s oldest brother in the first book in the series. This is book two–his book.

Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight

      western romance, Mary J McCoy-Dressel

      Blurb:

Rancher Jase Carlson doesn’t understand the ache in the hollow of his chest since his ex-wife ripped his heart out. She doesn’t follow the court rules where his children are concerned, making him even more pissed off when she steals them away from him. Harboring a bad attitude, and dedicating his life to finding his kids, he wishes he wasn’t a gentleman when he comes to the aid of a quick-tempered, sexy blonde. He can’t allow her tight jeans and sweet smile to sway him, even after he’s coerced into spending time alone with her. Fighting the torturous battle going on within his own mind and body, he can either deal with it—or succumb to the woman who appears to be everything he didn’t know he needed.

In an attempt to save her rebellious teen sister from herself—as her guardian, Brenna Page leaves everything behind and moves to Canyon Junction, Arizona. When she unexpectedly meets a hot-headed cowboy with intense blue eyes and muscles to die for, the first thing she wants to do is get away. Since she can’t seem to shake him, Brenna wonders if that same grudge-filled cowboy is worth taking on. But still dealing with painful memories, a nightmare behind her eyes she can’t forget, and a sister who wants nothing to do with Arizona, the last thing she needs right now is a horse ranching cowboy interfering.

One wrong turn. Two broken families. Brought together by chance and need.

In this snippet, Jase is having dinner with Brenna Page. Though their relationship is fairly new, and he’s on the fence about getting involved, tonight his heart isn’t as broken as it has been. Modified slightly from the original:

She turned back to the sink. Jase stood behind her while reaching into the cabinet. Leaning into her wasn’t an accident. He placed his right hand on her shoulder and removed two plates and then bowls to set on the counter beside her. He lowered his other hand to her shoulder. She rested against him, and he dropped his hands to her waist. He closed his eyes to savor the sweet scent of her hair.

      “Mmm, this is better’n food.”

“Uh huh.” Jase brushed hair away from one side of her neck, eyeing the rapid throb of her pulse beneath her fair skin. He closed his lips over the area, gingerly touching the tip of his tongue against it. The pump of her pulse against his mouth shot an arc of heat straight to… He cleared his throat.

Brenna stood straighter. Turning to face him, she pressed her palms against his chest. “I thought you were hungry?”

Jase tossed his head back and released a low groan. “I am hungry.” He lowered his eyes. “Uh, for lasagna. I love Italian food.” He turned around and sauntered to the window to look down at the parking lot to distract himself.

      Hungry.

      Yeah.

      Okay.

Check out the other books on the series page HERE. Book Five is planned for this year. Fingers crossed.

      Thanks for stopping by today.

      Have a great weekend.

I hope it’s warmer where you are. We’ve had it all this week: Six inches of snow, freezing rain, sleet, ice, below zero double-digit wind chill temperatures, then up to forty degrees for almost a full day. Now, a new winter storm and below zero temps and -35 degree wind chills are on the way as I write this.

        🛷⛸☃❄

      Thanks for reading.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance, short snippet Saturday blog post

Hi, Welcome back. If you’re expecting Part 2 this week as I mentioned last week when I posted Part 1, you won’t find it.

I thought about the post and the rest of the scene all that weekend and decided not to extend the scene here. In fact, I deleted the entire post. For one reason, the scene was taken out of context for those of you who don’t know the story. You missed the beginning when Jake went though accepting the changes about to overtake his and his son’s lives.

In hindsight, it wasn’t fair to the book. Maybe it gave you the wrong impression about the story, when in fact, it is not about what Paige did. It’s about what happens after Paige did Jake wrong. It’s about a first love coming back into a broken-hearted cowboy, and a little boy’s life. That’s what the story should convey.

Therefore, the quote I included in the post, should’ve started later:

When one door closes another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” ― Alexander Graham Bell

So this week, I choose to post a different scene from Whispers of Forever: Mending Christmas. I hope you don’t hold it against me for not continuing with the scene from last week. If you didn’t catch that post, all the better. LOL.  ❤

In last week’s Short Snippet Saturday excerpt, Paige had mentioned something awful she had done to ensure Jake would let her take Trace to live out of state. If only she could’ve seen into the future. Well, this is Jake dealing with the aftermath of the last cruel thing she had done…

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance, blog post short snippet Saturday

Beth’s thoughtfulness lightened his heart, but with a shrug, he stood straight. “I want you to be there.”

Agreeing, she followed him to where Trace watched TV. “We’ll be in my office for a few minutes if you need anything.”

“All right, Dad. I like this show. It’s a marathon tonight.”

“Enjoy it.” In the hallway, he stopped and placed his palms against the wall like he needed to hold it up, when in fact, it held him up. His head lowered toward the floor. He closed his eyes, breathing deep. “I’ve been thinking about this moment all evening. I don’t want to know now.” After a few minutes he continued to the office, closed the door, and took his phone out. “I’m sure this message is notification to check my account, not the actual result over voice mail.”

Beth took a seat in a leather chair near the window that looked out at the front of the property, and she remained quiet.

Jake dialed. Listened. He played the message with his eyes closed, one hand against the desk to prop himself up. His body felt numb. Disconnecting the call, he nodded and took a seat at his desk. The strength he depended on most of his life dissipated into the hard wood floor beneath his feet. “Yeah. I have a message in my account.”

Beth came to him and put her arm around his shoulder. He logged in with his computer password and went to his account, again logging in there too. She placed her other hand on his shoulder and spoke softly. Sweetly. “Do you want me to read it?”

His heart raced faster with each letter of the password, and by time the account opened, he might have a heart attack or stroke. Each move was forced, because this was all done against his will, or his better judgement. Why had this happened? Had Paige hated him that much? “I have to do this myself, but thanks.”

      “Jake, wait.”

He peered up at her, motionless, his hands still on the keyboard, his little finger ready to hit enter. His voice was sandpapery hoarse. “What?”

“What will you do… God, forgive me for saying this, but if the result is the same?” Beth stood behind, hugging him, and she leaned down until her cheek pressed against his head.

“How can I honestly answer? I love that kid, but to know he isn’t my flesh and blood, I don’t know how I’ll respond. Nothing can make me stop loving him…I hope.” Jake leaned his head back against Beth’s body, and she slid her hand over his shoulder to rest against his chest. Yeah, he was glad she was there. “I don’t want to feel any different, but what if I do? What do I tell him if I’m different toward him? He’s already lost his mother, for God sake.”

“He’s your son. My mom and dad loved me like their own child. I never felt like they didn’t. Honey, Trace won’t know, because I see how you are with him—I can’t imagine you changing. That boy is in your heart, your soul.”

“Because for almost ten years he was my child. That’s why I’m…” He hesitated.

“He is your child. You’ve raised him—have loved him through all the ups and downs…and he loves you.”

“There’s only one way to find out. Either way, he’s never going to know, Beth.” Jake blew out the breath building up inside his body like a gas ready to explode. He had never been afraid of anything, but he was terrified of this. What if the results turned out the same as her rigged test? He dropped his hands to his knees. What if he did tell Trace? Would he want to find his real father one day? “I don’t know if I can do this. I could lose him.”

“No one would know except you and I. If you want, I can leave the room so only you know.”

He grasped her hand. “No. You’re a part of this with me.” How could he ask her to love his son if he wasn’t sure himself that he could? Dammit. He was sure. One hundred percent sure. No matter what, that child was his, and he’d love him until the day he died, flesh and blood or not. Jake hit enter and clicked open the PDF attachment. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath before opening them. He read: “Child, Trace Lawton. Father, Jake Lawton. Are you reading this, Beth?”

Still standing behind him, she whispered with empathy in her voice, “Yes,” and squeezed his shoulders.

Jake scrolled to the bottom of the test, and read: “Probability of Paternity…

      Thanks for reading!

This is one of my favorite covers to date. Hooked by Sundown turned out to be another of my favorite books, as well. Giving this secondary character in the series a book was the right choice. I knew he had a story lurking inside. Poor guy.

      Thanks to:

My talented cover designer, Dawnè Dominique at DuskTilDawn Designs, for creating more than a dozen covers for me. When she sent me the first draft for Hooked by Sundown, I accepted it with no changes to be made. She has a way of getting into my head and seeing my vision, but with her artistic eye to keep me focused. You know you’ve met the perfect team member when this happens. You have no idea, and I’ll never tell, all the special things she did to create certain aspects of this cover.

Thanks to the male cover model, Mathias, for bringing Wade to life. As soon as I saw him, I knew he was the same Wade I had in my head. I swear, he walked out of my head and into the door at Period Images. VJ Dunraven sure knows how to capture a moment with her camera.

Thanks so much for coming around today to join me in showing off my newest cover to the world. I’ll return with links when the book is available.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

long stem red rose laying on sheet music, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance, Blog Post Short Snippet Saturday

Well, hello there. I feel like I’m coming out of retirement by posting a short snippet today, but I wanted to share something from my upcoming book before y’all forget who I am. Without me giving away the title or cover reveal yet, I hope this makes sense to you. Trust me, it’ll be soon, very soon. Maybe Probably even this week. In fact, the post is already written.

No, Sundown on the Beach is not the title of the book. It’s only the title of this post.

Note: In a previous excerpt from this book, our little boy’s name was Tanner. It’s since been changed to Emmett.

Set-up: Wade and Sophie have previously met and had a run-in twice in the same day. See the Snippet here for one of those run-ins. We’re into that evening now for this new snippet.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Short Snippet Saturday Post Sundown on the Beach, western romance

Sophie held her son’s hand as they walked along the shoreline. Cool waves lapped at their feet in flip-flops. “I’m sorry you had to see Uncle Clay this way.”

      “He was drunk?”

“Oh, Emmett. You know more than you should.” She glanced to the right to find Wade watching them. Why had she been so rude to him when he’d tried to help? It wouldn’t have been long before she’d ended up on the ground if Clay had his way. She nearly gave him a knee where it counted. His temper got the best of her brother. That’s what landed him in jail. Temper and booze never mixed well. “Come on, Emmett.” They headed toward Wade. The sun lit up his face, the burning glow reflecting in his sunglasses. He removed them to reveal warm brown eyes.

“Emmett, why don’t you build a sand castle. We’ll only be a minute.”

      “Okay. Thanks, Mom.”

She peered at Wade. He stood, and it took a second before she reached for his hand. “Sophie Price-Daniels. This is my son, Emmett.”

“Nice to officially meet you, ma’am. Emmett.”

He had a strong grip and incredible smile. His faint leather fragrance mixed with the sea and sand. His cologne smelled like what her husband used to wear. She withdrew the memory.

“Care to have a seat? Sunset’s closing in on us. Be a shame to miss it.”

“Sure.” She took a seat beside him in the sand. “Did you find an adventurous spot for lunch or dinner?”

He glanced at her son playing in the sand then at others in the water. “Nothing special tonight. I saved adventure for another day.”

They sat in silence. Sophie was at a loss for words—so unlike her. He remained quiet, but she sat close enough to feel the warmth from his body and the dampness of the sand. Out of the corner of her eye, she viewed him sitting with his knees bent and arms resting across them, his fingers loosely entwined. She leaned back on her elbows and stretched out her legs on the warm sand. His gaze went to her legs.

      “How long is your vacation?”

“More than likely this week.” He turned to her. “How about you?”

His eyes looked so caring and full of sincerity but kind of sad at the same time. “I’m heading out Saturday. Thanks for getting my money back. I would’ve had to contact my sister to ask for a loan and change my flight. She didn’t want me to come, so I’d have to grovel for years.”

“I take it your family isn’t close.”

“Well, my sister and I are, but my brother…” Sophie paused, sighing. “He’s another story.”

      “Every family has one, Sophie.”

It sounded nice the way her name rolled off a stranger’s lips.

Emmett stood in front of her blocking the sun. “Mom, can I go get some water for my castle?”

“Honey, we don’t have a bucket here.”

The young boy begged, “I’ll hold it in my hands.”

“You can try, but it’ll all fall out before you get back.” She stood and brushed off her shorts and legs. “Let’s go.”

Wade got to his feet with great speed. “Here, I have an idea. Mind if I go down there with you?”

Sophie nodded her approval. “Hold on, Emmett. This is Mr. Emory.”

“Hey, mister. Come on.” Emmett took off running.

Wade ran past him, took his shirt off, and doused it in the water. He dove in the waves and came up some yards out, shirt still in hand. “Take your shirt off, Emmett. We’ll squeeze the water out onto your castle. It won’t be much, but a few trips will help.”

Emmett giggled and removed his shirt without asking. He followed Wade back to the sand castle and they squeezed out their t-shirts. Sophie laughed with them and did her best to ignore the bare-chested stranger dripping beside them.

Thanks for reading. I’ll see you all again real soon.

My book formatter lives in North Carolina and had been without power for days, but she has survived living through another hurricane. She still doesn’t have internet, so my book is a little more delayed than I’d planned. Her cable company tells her the internet should be back up today. (Saturday)  I’ll send her my manuscript as soon as she lets me know.

    • Research at Work #MFRWauthor Week 13

      Posted at 8:49 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 30, 2018

If you see a post this week, then that’s great. This means I was able to post it. We’re at Week 13 in the Marketing for Romance Writers 52-Week Blog Challenge. I don’t expect to do each week this year. Some of the topics don’t fit anything I could write about. I’ll find a filler for this time slot.  🙂

Week 13: What I learned while researching my book

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance

Jason and Period Images did a special shoot for me with military and cowboy shots including the shirtless image on the book cover. (Sidebar)

      Hashtag: #MFRWauthor

I’ll use the third book in my Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight, Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord, for this week’s topic. The hero in this book is an Army Ranger. I’m happy to say this title came to  me through research by way of–Sua Sponte (Of Their Own Accord) Rangers Lead the Way is the 75th Ranger Regiment’s Regimental motto. I learned so much about Army Rangers. Wow, deep respect.

I’ll be referring to the Army here because that’s what I researched.

I wrote the draft using the knowledge I did know about military life since I come from a family of military people and it continues with second cousins. Recently a third cousin entered right out of high school.

However, when I started revisions, I had to be specific when dealing with this subject.

      RESEARCH

The most important thing I learned is to triple the respect I already had for the military and their special forces, including their military working dogs.

My research came from military websites, documentaries and interviews on the DoD Channel, movies like Black Hawk Down, soldiers I know personally or online, non-fiction books written by soldiers, but my major research came from an Army Lieutenant who answered my questions while still in Afghanistan who wishes to remain anonymous. To have him confirm my research or explain a better way to describe it, was such a big help to me. Without his help and his confirmations at how I had handled certain aspects, I wouldn’t have been able to keep certain things in the book if I’d had to guess. I’m so grateful.

A handful of what I learned while researching this book:

      • How to communicate with family while deployed overseas.
      • Out-processing.
      • ACUs- Army Combat Uniform.
      • Deployment mobilization and in, out processing from Fort Benning, GA.
      • What a tough box looks like. My contact basically said, “It’s a big black box.” Think footlocker.
      • Uniform and rules while wearing. I believe U.S. Army uniforms changed to dress blues during the writing of this book in 2014. Do you know Rangers wear tan berets?
      • When to wear white mess uniforms.  Wow, my hero was hot in his in Heartbreak’s Reward #2.  ❤
      • Duties of an NCO- Non-Commissioned Officer.
      • Rank order and responsibilities.
      • Canine PTSD. Military Working Dogs & PTSD. My hero’s retired MWD has PTSD. (Oh, I loved his character in the book. His name is Boston.)

Double Dutch Ranch Series, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance

I don’t have to use everything I’ve learned, but it’s important that I know. The extra research allows me to live in the world I’m creating. Yes, there is more, but I’ll stop there.

I don’t write military romance or consider this to be in the Military Romance subgenre, but by the time I finished this book, I patted myself on the back for seeing it through.

      OH, NO!

One thing I’ve learned the hard way in researching is to check and double check. Triple check!. Then check again. As much as I hate to admit it, I did get burned by using a particular site’s view of streets and the word of another instead of double checking myself. I’m always adamant about double or triple checking facts. Except that time. Use all the options you have to get it right.

Wow, a scary thing happened. I added a video up there in the bullet point area, and it wiped away every word and image below it. Then I discovered I had lost links in my post and recent edits. I didn’t know WordPress had a “History” feature. Thank goodness, but I’m not sure what I lost that I didn’t add back.

I have no affiliation with the links I’ve shared.

Since this is a BLOG HOP, join me in in reading what other authors have learned in research. Thanks for reading.
