      Week 28 – MFRW 52-Week Blog Challenge ~ Blog Hop #MFRWauthor

Week 28: Life Lessons in My Books

Well, folks, this has been an awful week. Last Sunday I had to have my dog put down. She was fourteen. My son got her when she was ten months old. She’s been mine 24/7 for the last seven years. We are all devastated, but she deteriorated rapidly the last two days of her life. I miss her like crazy, and it feels like she’s pressed up against my office chair as I sit at my desk. I still look so I don’t roll into her. I check the floor beside my bed before stepping down. I wrote her into my book, Whispers of Forever, as a tribute because I knew our days together were limited. She’s on the cover, too.

      RIP my sweet girl, Kasha.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance

As if that wasn’t enough, on the same day before we knew we’d be putting her down, my son and daughter-in-law told me they’re moving to Virginia. They now live seven miles from me. My older son lives on the other coast. I’m going to miss him so much. If I’m not crying over the dog, I’m crying over them leaving. Deep breath. I know life goes on. That should be my life lesson.

      So…

I wasn’t in the mood to write a post this week but the topic is kind of important. Life lessons? How do I get the point across to readers in my books?

Here’s an example. In my Bull Rider Series, the first book shows that my heroine, Howdy, Ma'am, Bull Rider Series, Mary J McCoy-DresselVelia, is living with an abusive husband. How ironic for her since she is on a plane returning from a funeral for her aunt in Italy who died at her husband’s hands. She left three children behind. Velia has an awakening, and begins her plan of escape and she carries it through.

This is one life lesson I want my readers to get.

No one needs to live in a mental or physical abusive relationship. Do I speak from experience on this topic? Maybe I do. Maybe I don’t. Do I think it’s easy to walk away from an abusive relationship? Hell no. It isn’t. After a while it seems like the normal way of life. That’s all I’ll say about that. Referring to the book and in reality, I wrote a short post about Domestic Abuse.

I’m talking for women though men are abused too in a relationship, but I know most of my readers are women.

Outside of abuse, I want to let readers know through my heroines, they are allowed to be independent and have their own minds and opinions. Through my heroes, I want to show that, sure, they can get mad about something, and maybe not approve, but no matter what, they will respect their heroine, and vice versa in this scenario.

Someone close to me wasn’t allowed this in her life. She had to live under her husband’s thumb to a certain extent. She accepted it because he provided for the family, and she didn’t feel like she deserved to have more than she’d like to have. My mother lived a hellish life with my dad, and he tried the same thing with me growing up. He realized early that I was an independent soul whether he liked it or not. He eventually embraced the idea that I stuck up for myself. I try to relay this message in my books.

Shouldn’t everyone have a right to an opinion in a relationship?  MJ McCoy-Dressel

A friend had turned all finances in their family over to her husband. He gave her a small allowance each month. I mean small, and some of the income had been her earnings. She scrimped for months to buy an outfit when her husband didn’t have to ask permission to buy a new…anything. How is this fair? Fairness isn’t an option. Is it? Am I wrong? Maybe it’s my own independent mind thinking love should be fair.

I hope the life lessons in my books show that a person should expect to be treated with:

      • Respect.
      • Fairness.
      • As an equal.
      • Without fear of being slapped or worse.
      • Without FEAR.
      • You have a choice.
      • Independence isn’t a bad thing.
      • Love.

      Thanks for reading today.

    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: Who Do You Trust?

      Posted at 10:53 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 8, 2016

      Trust yourself?

If you don’t, who will? Sounds easy to see two little words scribbled out on a banner, huh? It is easier to say than to do. For many human beings, trust is only a word. The phrase “Trust Yourself” has a deeper meaning.

      Trust 2

To trust myself? How do I prove trust to myself? If you could see the inside of my mind and body when I prepare to put my written words–a novel–out into the public, those words disappear from my vocabulary…momentarily. Okay, in truth, for many minutes, hours, days… They are replaced with the word Fear.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance, cowboys

In reality, I need to have an inner trust knowing that every day I’m exposed to the public–the world, which is exactly what I’m doing this minute. But, as I said above, if I don’t who will? It doesn’t take much for that trust within myself to waver, but when writing chose me to spill out those ideas my muse throws at me, I force myself to shove fear/panic aside so I can trust myself. Trust yourself. Right. Easier said than done. Trust yourself anyway.

Am I proud of admitting how “fear” can take over sometimes and blur that inner trust? No, of course not, but I’m only human. Am I the only one with that panic button lurking inside when it comes to exposing oneself?

    • A Time of Fear SOCSunday

      Posted at 2:51 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on December 18, 2011

Hopefully I’ll be able to do this brain dump in five minutes, but don’t count on it this week. I missed two weeks and really wish I could write something different this week, but my mind still lives in fear for my brother’s family. Here’s my dump and you’ll see why I feel as I do. This SOC doesn’t seem to fit with  my Blog’s Christmas theme but I have to have something normal right now.

Last week I received an email from one of my cousins asking if everything was okay at my brothers. He said “I saw it on the news.” It? I had no idea what he was talking about since I didn’t watch the news that morning.

I immediately called my brother and his nightmare became mine, but he was on his way to talk to detectives and couldn’t talk on the phone long. The previous night he was sitting at his table eating dinner and the next thing he knew there was a shotgun in his face and 3 masked men standing in his dining room. His two grown sons were home; my sister-in-law had just left. To spare the details, just know now they are physically okay although one nephew went by EMT to the hospital to get 15 stitches in his head from being hit with the butt of the pistol.

In the end, my nephews got the guns away and the three men took off. Well, needless to say, I am living in fear for them right now, as are they. They went through it and are fearful each night, and I have the after effects as well. To think all three of them could have been killed in the blink of an eye, and what my sister in law could have walked into, scares the crap out of me. I am so worried for them.

I can’t go into a lot of detail right now, hopefully later. I hope and pray they catch these thugs who apparently think nothing of another human life. My brother felt that he was going to die that night, and when his son was hit in the head, he didn’t know if he was shot or what, since a gun did go off. He only knew there was blood all over the floor and my nephew. Each one of them thought they were going to die that night.

My fear is great for them and I so want to be able to protect them, but who am I? Just thinking back at this horrible ordeal makes my heart pound and race. How do they get through their nights, when I think of it all night and I’m on the other side of town. Will the fear ever go away? Will they ever feel safe again. I’m so afraid for them.
