      Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western romance

Wow, we’re nearly at the end of 2017. Congratulations to those of you who participated each week in the Marketing for Romance Writers 52-Week Blog Challenge.

      Week 52: New Year’s Resolutions:

This means we have to tell you our resolutions or goals for 2018. Today I’m quoting myself with a snippet from a paragraph from a January 2011 post:

A goal is what I want to reach for–to strive to meet. In a resolution, I am saying I’m going to do it, and not falter with firm determination. There are too many obstacles that can get in my way with a resolution.

      IMHO

Here are my goals in no particular order, not including personal goals I choose to keep to myself. Sometimes a lady doesn’t tell…

      Writing Related Goals for 2018:

Publish two books & rewrite another.
Update backmatter in my older books.
Blog at least twice a week. (Yep, 2017 proved to me that I wasn’t good at keeping up with three posts a week for a year.)
      Learn a little HTML.

      Life Changes:

      Get more active.
      Eat healthier foods
      Move to a new apartment.

      Personal:

      Spend more time with friends.
Get out and away from the computer.
Dedicate more time to Reading for pleasure.
Cook real food instead of food that goes DING.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance,

      This is a Blog Hop.
Let’s visit the other authors on our last week together in 2017.

How about you, bloggers and readers? Do you make goals or resolutions? If so, have you thought of resolutions/ goals for the upcoming year?

      Be Safe.

Thanks to all of you for taking a ride with me this year. Yeehaa!

By now you’ve probably read every kind of New Year’s goal or resolution blog, story, advice, or joke available. So, here’s one more angle for you to consider.

Which do you prefer, goals or resolutions? A resolution means you are resolving to do something—a plan of action to commit yourself to something you’re determined to do. A goal is something you want to reach—the result or achievement which effort is directed; aim; end. So, which do you prefer? Personally, I like to make goals instead of resolutions.

It seems to be easier to reach because goals are usually met at different levels. It’s good to start out with a short term goal. For instance, if you want to lose weight, don’t set your goal at 25 pounds. Set it at six to eight pounds instead. When you reach that goal then set it for six to eight more pounds. It’s much easier to reach a short term goal. It also lets you feel good about yourself if you have a shorter time to aim for it instead of thinking it could take a year to get results.

Another example is something writers do. Some authors set goals, saying they’ll write ten pages or 500 words, etc. I like to set my goal as chapters. When I finish a chapter, I feel like I’ve accomplished something more. A chapter is like a whole episode in a book, meaning you’ve finished another milestone in your story. A goal is what I want to reach for, to strive to meet. In a resolution, I am saying I am going to do it, and not falter with firm determination. There are too many obstacles that can get in your way with a resolution. Isn’t it depressing when you don’t meet what you resolved to do? That is one reason you should set short term goals instead of unrealistic resolutions.

    • Almost Good-Bye to Another Year

      Posted at 9:46 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on December 29, 2010

Wednesday, December 29th 2010. Three days from now it will be a new year. Where did 2010 go? Can you think of a special moment in 2010? Something you will never forget? I hope it isn’t something sad. If it is, I’m sorry for causing you to think of sadness. Sometimes it seems like a year flies by and other times it feels like it was the longest year ever. Has your year gone by quickly, or has it dragged on forever?

I have mixed emotions about this past year. Big changes happened in my two-thousand ten.  For one, my job changed. I’m in the same job but the job description is different. I like it much better. My stress level changed for the worse in the past 52 weeks. There were times I thought I would crack. The previous change brought on another change. I moved away from the stress related factors. Life is better now. Some parts of it anyway.

A lot of other changes went on, both good and bad. Did I reach any of my goals for this year? Since I didn’t make a list of them, I have no way of knowing. I did write two more books. I didn’t finish the one I wanted to finish though. Seems there are pros and cons for most of my year. Maybe that’s normal for everyone; after all it’s 365 days, we’re bound to have pros and cons. Did you reach any of your goals or resolutions?

I’ll be back in 2011 to talk about goals and resolutions. But, for now it’s still this year. Honestly, with those mixed emotions I have one thing to say to you, year 2010– We’ll never meet again . . .
