    • Almost Good-Bye to Another Year

      Posted at 9:46 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on December 29, 2010

Wednesday, December 29th 2010. Three days from now it will be a new year. Where did 2010 go? Can you think of a special moment in 2010? Something you will never forget? I hope it isn’t something sad. If it is, I’m sorry for causing you to think of sadness. Sometimes it seems like a year flies by and other times it feels like it was the longest year ever. Has your year gone by quickly, or has it dragged on forever?

I have mixed emotions about this past year. Big changes happened in my two-thousand ten.  For one, my job changed. I’m in the same job but the job description is different. I like it much better. My stress level changed for the worse in the past 52 weeks. There were times I thought I would crack. The previous change brought on another change. I moved away from the stress related factors. Life is better now. Some parts of it anyway.

A lot of other changes went on, both good and bad. Did I reach any of my goals for this year? Since I didn’t make a list of them, I have no way of knowing. I did write two more books. I didn’t finish the one I wanted to finish though. Seems there are pros and cons for most of my year. Maybe that’s normal for everyone; after all it’s 365 days, we’re bound to have pros and cons. Did you reach any of your goals or resolutions?

I’ll be back in 2011 to talk about goals and resolutions. But, for now it’s still this year. Honestly, with those mixed emotions I have one thing to say to you, year 2010– We’ll never meet again . . .

    • Christmas Memories

      Posted at 12:01 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on December 20, 2010

Did you believe in Santa Claus when you were a child? I don’t know if I did. I remember picking out a lot of my own Christmas gifts, but that was when I was older. My earliest memory (I think) was a snowy night in Detroit. It was my parents, my little brother, and me. We lived with my grandmother then. It was nighttime and the side street we lived on was covered with snow. There was only car tracks up and down the road with nothing shoveled or plowed; the snow was deep. I remember the snow covered street because that evening, Christmas Eve, my parents took my brother and I down the street to the hardware store before they closed. They bought us a wagon. A shiny red wagon. They pulled us home in it down that snowy street through the car tracks. It wasn’t easy to pull two kids in a wagon through the snow.

I don’t know if my parents believed in surprises. Wrapping my own Christmas gifts, and putting them under the tree was really the only way I knew Christmas at my house. I did it many times, and my mom did the same thing with her gifts even after us kids grew up and left home. She said that way she could choose
her own gift. Christmas morning was never a surprise at my house as a child. Christmas at my aunt and uncles was always different. We visited early and always had surprise gifts to unwrap. I watched as my cousins opened gift after gift and were surprised at each one. I envied them. I felt like Santa came to their house and not mine. I loved being at their house, whether it was Christmas or not.

Did I carry on that tradition with my own kids? Not at all. Everything was wrapped and nothing got opened until Christmas morning. Everything was a surprise for my boys and everyone else. And they believed in Santa Claus. I encouraged them to believe in Santa. We’d go to the mall and have pictures taken with the jolly man in a red suit.

When we grew up, on Christmas Eve my brother and I always took our families to Grandma and Grandpa’s house. It was then we got to unwrap surprise gifts. I don’t know the reason behind us picking out our own Christmas gifts as children. I suppose it was something my parent’s agreed on and figured we would get what we wanted that way.

But, times changed when they became grandparents. The grandchildren had fun times at their house, and we did too. Even though all the kids are grown now and grandma and grandpa are both gone, I still carry many Christmas memories. Maybe they were different but Christmas was still Christmas. We still had gifts and food and love.

I had step-grandchildren for a time and Christmas with them was a joy, exciting, and filled with love. It was the true meaning of Christmas to see the sparkle in their eyes. When the day comes that I have my own
grandchildren, they will know surprises and believe Santa Claus brought them. Of course they’ll always have their own Christmas memory of Grandma’s love.

Blessings to you all. Have a wonderful Holiday Season.

    • Can I Write Without the Internet?

      Posted at 12:18 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on August 24, 2009

      glitter-graphics.com

No Internet!  ACKKKKKK!  It’s horrible not being able to get online.  I typed into Word because I had to be at my keyboard doing something!  It’s so boring here without it.  Yesterday, I didn’t know I would get up today and be without an internet connection.  I woke up, had coffee, and then reached for my laptop.  All I really wanted to do was write in my journal written in Word.  Then I noticed there was no internet connection.  No big deal at the moment because I wasn’t doing anything online.

All I wanted to do was write, but I couldn’t remember the password to my journal.  I don’t usually keep passwords, but on this one I do, and I hadn’t checked into it for a few weeks.  It took forever for me to remember it.  This, I found, is caused from stress.  It affects how you think.  Stress steals your memory.

I’m okay without being on the Internet as long as I can write.  But, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m addicted to my laptop, and sometimes the Internet.  I think because the TV is always on to something I don’t want to watch.  (Other people in the house are watching.) I don’t mind watching the news, and I like to stay informed, but when they repeat the same thing over and over, it gets to you.  Know what I mean?  And a person can only watch so many Judge Judy’s!

Not long after I started writing this blog that day, I had to make the call to the Internet provider. I have an experimental WiFi service, and I guess it’s cheap enough not to complain.  When it works, it’s great!  And it does work most of the time.  When I called them, it only took a short time for them to check the radio box on the telephone pole down the street, and then they detected my nanostation.  Is that all confusing?  Its okay, if you don’t have WiFi, I guess you don’t have to worry about it.

After they told me they saw my computer on a radio at another pole, I told them the first pole was the closest to my house.  They said it wasn’t.  I live here–I should know which pole I’m closer to.  Anyway, they fixed me up and I was happy!

I discovered that even though I can write without being on the Internet, I can’t write without doing research.  Therefore, a writer needs the Internet to work, all the time.  I can choose to use it if I want, or I can choose to not click on Internet Explorer.  I admit, when I do make that click, and I see my homepage load, it’s not hard to get distracted.  There are too many things to choose to do.  I’m an adult. I should be able to discipline myself to write or to play.  This was one of those times.  I wrote this whole blog post without clicking on IE.  I noticed one problem, though.  I use Outlook for my email, and I did have to stop and read my email during this writing.  I’m disciplined, but I’m also tempted by my cyber-world.

      Until the next time….

    • Travel Rambling

      Posted at 2:39 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on August 10, 2009

I missed my daily blog for two days. I guess that means I don’t qualify for the badge that says I blogged daily. It made me wonder if I wanted to blog on a daily basis, but I’m starting to get in the habit of it now. So, if I write three today, will that count? I was still writing, in fact, writing a lot, but not here. So, I guess I was blogging daily! I am writing a blog post for another blog about some of my travels. I don’t know if it will be accepted. If not, I will submit it to my other writing site where I can get paid for clicks to the page. It’s not much; only a half a penny per click or something like that. But, it’s fun, and I get comments which help my writing anyway.

Traveling is something I love to do. Last November I traveled by myself to California to spend Thanksgiving with my oldest son. The flight was long, or I should say FLIGHTS. It took three different planes to get there. It made for a tiring day, but I would do it all over again if I had the chance. Traveling alone is both good and bad. The good part is you can do whatever you want, whenever you want while at the airport. If you want to get up and get a cup of coffee or something to eat, you don’t have to ask anyone else where they would like to go. You make the decision, you go. And, you don’t have to sit next to a stranger if you’re not sitting in the middle. On the flipside, one bad part I can think of is going to the bathroom. It’s not like it used to be, in that, you don’t dare leave your baggage anywhere alone. That means if you have your laptop out, you pack it back up, put it away, give up your seat, and go to the bathroom, or wherever it is you’re going. And, no matter where you sit, you’re next to a stranger.

I had my laptop bag on my shoulder, and my wheeled carry-on, plus a purse! Try carrying a cup of coffee, a bottle of water, and a bagel. It’s possible; I did it! Put your purse in your carry-on, or hang it over the handle, stick the water anywhere you can find where it will fit, and put the laptop strap across your chest instead of just on your shoulder. At least it will be secured that way. You don’t want to take the chance of it slipping off your shoulder with a cup of hot coffee in your hand. Other than not having someone to talk to on a long flight, or when you have to wait three hours like it did, I do prefer to travel alone sometimes. I’m yearning for another trip as we speak! I’ll save my trip home for another blog! Now, if we’re talking about car travel… that’s a whole new story, too!

    • Three Wishes

      Posted at 4:10 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 30, 2009

Have you ever made a wish?  I bet everyone has one time or another.  Birthdays are the first thing that come to mind.  Even if we don’t want to, our friends practically beg us to make a wish as we blow out our candles.  Think about this for a moment.  Do you expect the wish to come true?  I do it for fun and to please everyone else.

Well, let this take a different turn.  What if  those wishes could come true?  Let’s imagine for a minute or two, that we have three wishes.  These three wishes are just for us and our own personal gain, pleasure, or whim.   Of course, we all wish for world peace and for the hungry to be full.

What would you wish for if you knew your three wishes were guaranteed to come true and at no out-of-pocket costs?   Before I started writing this, I tried to think of three things that would make my life better.  It wasn’t easy to come up with these ideas, after all, it will probably never happen again in my lifetime, so I want to make it right.  Remember, we are to use it for our own personal needs and wants.

My number one wish would be to have good health… (I’m including my two sons in this wish.)

With good health, I [We] wouldn’t have to worry about any family illnesses or diseases.  After all, we’d have a guarantee.  I think in my mind’s eye, my life would be better all the way around if I knew we didn’t have to worry about getting sick.  All three of us would save money on health insurance.  Think of all those hours waiting in doctors’ offices.  That would be over.  Medicine?  There would be so much money saved by not buying prescriptions.  I do believe good health would be one of my three wishes.  I’m left with two more.

My second wish would be to have an endless amount of money. (Is this selfish?)

I don’t know where this money is going to come from.  It doesn’t have to be a lot of money all at once.  It has to be money that is always in my bank account, and it magically appears as I need it.  Do I want to buy a new house?  No problem, I’ll write a check.  Of course, the house will be large enough to house my immediate family for as long as they wanted to stay.  Did I mention an extended vacation?  Why not?  After all, the money is in the bank for whatever I might need.  Never living with an endless amount of money, it’s hard for me to say what I’d do with it.  Just think…  Endless money!

      For my third wish…

Hmm, do I wish for more wishes?  Would that be greedy?  We all know it would be.  I think for my third wish, I’d wish for a happy family life.  No family quarrels, no family problems, no worries.  Everyone would live close to each other, and be one happy family.  There would always be laughter, love, and trust.  We can’t leave out best friends, though.  No, we can’t get along without best friends.

So, for today, these are my three wishes.  Who knows what I might wish for tomorrow or the next day.  For now, this is how I feel, and I think these wishes fit today.  I invite you to take a minute and think about three wishes.  Remember, this is for you, something you deserve in your life.   Do it for fun.  Go all out and see what you come up with.  When it comes around to your birthday, and you see the candles burning, get ready–  You  know someone is going to ask, or I should say, tell you, you need to make a wish.

Go ahead and think about it.  We know our three wishes aren’t really going to be granted by some genie or unknown force with the power to do so.  Maybe if we do think seriously about it, we can grant our own wishes.  Maybe it’s impossible to have endless money in the bank, but it is possible to contribute to your own good health, or to a happy close-knit family.  See, there might be ways for some of those wishes to come true.  Try it!  I’d love to hear about your wishes, so please feel free to leave a comment.
