Week 20: “My favorite movies inspired by books”

I’m getting in under the wire here because I ran out of time to get my post ready. Earlier in the week I listed some of my favorite movies that were inspired by books, so I had that part already scratched out in my notes. Here we go…

One of my favorite movies is Somewhere in Time. It was filmed on Mackinac Island in Michigan, my home state. Every year they celebrate the movie on the island. Jane Seymour has visited. Sadly, I have never attended. In fact, I just pulled the movie off my shelf as a reminder to watch again soon. Official Trailer.

I’ve been there and stood at the same tree where Elise McKenna (Jane Seymour)  said to Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve), “Is it you?” In fact, I said the same thing while standing there. Sorry the photo is blurry. It’s a picture of a picture. You can see part of it is ripped off…a story in itself.

I have the CD too, but I haven’t listened to it in years. My favorite song on the CD is:  Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini (Somewhere In Time/Soundtrack Version) by by Chet Swiatkowski.

Did you know the original book for that movie was called Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson? I have this hardback book somewhere, but I think mine has the title written across the front of the book.

Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson

It was later that the screenplay version came out as Somewhere in Time. I have this book also but with a different cover. This differs from the original storyline in Bid Time Return. The author played a cameo role in the movie.  He also wrote this version, which is probably the screenplay version. I can’t find the actual book that I own, online now. It has the same cover as the movie.

Another of my favorite movies inspired by books is Letters to Juliet, which is the same name as the book. Also, by Lise and Ceil Friedman Letters to Juliet: Celebrating Shakespeare’s Greatest Heroine, the Magical City of Verona, and the Power of Love, sounds more like a story ABOUT the movie and not the book according to some of the reviews.  I love this movie because it’s a romance and it takes place in Italy. A win-win for me.

Some other movies I like Inspired by books:

Walt Longmire Books by Craig Johnson. This very well could have been number one on my list since I’m a big Longmire fan. No, it wasn’t made into a movie but instead a TV series, so it’s still something you can WATCH. Netflix picked it up after A&E dumped the show with no warning after three seasons. Season six is coming up in September and it’ll be the final season. I’ll sure miss the show and the cast. The Longmire Posse, a group that started on Twitter had a lot to do with getting Netflix to pick up the show. Of course, I’m in that group!

Dear John and The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. (The last movie I watched based on one of his books tore me to pieces at the ending, and it’ll be a long time before I read or watch another one.)

      Eat Pray Love

James Bond Books and Movies, especially movies with Daniel Craig.

      Bourne movies

      Black hawk down

I’m sure there are more I could add to my list since I’ve lived through a lifetime of watching movies based on books, but I’ll stop here.

Stop by to visit the other participants, because you guys know this is a blog hop.  🙂 Thanks!

      Have a great weekend.

Update: I just watched Somewhere in Time, and they show the title of the book in the beginning credits saying Richard Mathewson wrote the screenplay based on his book Bid Time Return. And yes. I still love the movie. As soon as it started I had that feel good feeling inside, even after losing count of how many times I’ve seen it.  💕

    • 13 Romantic Movies I’d watch again~ Thursday Thirteen

      Posted at 9:05 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on May 22, 2014

      #Thursday13 #ThursdayThirteen

TT11Watching romantic movies gives me a ‘feel good’ feeling. Even if I have to cry. There’s a big difference between happy tears and sad tears. With my selection, you’ll find both. Either way, I’ve watched these movies more than once and I’d watch them again.

      How about you?

They should come with a box of tissues.

      My List

Somewhere in Time Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. Takes place in my own state on Mackinac Island. I have a cute story about my Somewhere in Time tour—it has to do with the tree scene in this trailer. The book: Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson. I’ve read it. (Richard Matheson had a bit part in the movie.) I have the soundtrack too. It’s beautiful. Each year they have a festival on the island to celebrate this movie and era.

image_thumb.pngThe Lost Valentine A Hallmark Channel Movie staring Betty White, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Sean Faris.

The Notebook Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams

A Walk to Remember Shane West and Mandy Moore

Under the Tuscan Sun Diane Lane. More of a romance between the heroine and Italy with a happy ending.

Ghost Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore

Dear John Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum

Hope Floats Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick, Jr

The Back-up Plan Jennifer Lopez and Alex O’Loughlin

Letters to Juliet Another movie taking place in Italy. Beautiful. Amanda Seyfried, Christopher Egan, Vanessa Redgrave, Gael García Bernal, and Franco Nero.

      Moonstruck Cher and Nicolas Cage

Nights in Rodanthe Richard Geer 😦 So sad.

Kate & Leopold Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman

I see a pattern here! Nicholas Sparks has written more than one of these. It figures, huh. He is one of my favorite authors.

Do you have a movie you watch again and again?

As always, feel free to follow my blog. For those interested, I have a mailing list to be notified of a new release or important book update. Be the first to know… Sign Up here, or follow the links in the sidebar or menu. Thanks!

    • Happy to Accept the Sunshine Award

      Posted at 1:34 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 23, 2013

sunshine-award1I was awarded The Sunshine Award from Gus Sanchez at Out Where the Busses Don’t Run. (I wonder if I’ll get out where the busses don’t run if I have a walk with words.) I’m sorry, I crack myself up sometimes. Many thanks, Gus, for nominating me for this award. It was very unexpected and appreciated. Now I need to answer a few questions and nominate some bloggers with the Sunshine Award so they can answer some questions. My nominations are at the end of my answers.

      ~~

What inspired you to start blogging?

I first started blogging around 2006 when I published my first book. I use that blog for archives now because I couldn’t bring myself to close it when I started this one.  I wanted a way to update readers and friends on book info, plus I had a personal blog for family. Now I blog here about a variety of topics.

How did you come up with the name of your blog?

I brainstormed the name until it felt right. I actually looked at the header of an old theme I had with a path down a tree lined road, and it reminded me of taking a walk. I’m a writer so I put different things together to go with “walk” and what my blog was about, which was words. So, A Walk with Words was born.

What is your favorite blog that you like to read?

There are too many to choose one. Barbara Conelli writes about travel and Italy, and since I love Italy and travel, I enjoy hers, but to say I have one favorite would be cheating the other bloggers I follow.

      Tell about your dream job.

I’m living my dream job as a full time writer. I waited a long time for this.

Is your glass half full or half empty?

I like my glass a little more than half full. Since I’m human, once in awhile it gets close to empty.

If you could go anywhere on a week’s vacation, where would you go?

At first I thought this would be easy. If I have to choose one place, it would be Tuscany, Italy, but I’d rather have longer than a week in Italy. Since I only have a week, I’d go to Arizona, preferably Tucson. I can be there in a few hours on a plane and have almost the full week. There are many things there I want to explore.

What food can you absolutely not eat?

I can’t stand the taste of cilantro.

      Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?

Dark Chocolate. Yum—85% isn’t too much.

How much time do you spend blogging – in other words, are you one of those lucky people who can dash off a blog post in no time, or like me and take forever on one post to get it just right?

It takes me forever to write a blog post most of the time. I have to start it, let it rest, go back later, finish, and then let it sit at least overnight. I’ll reread it the next day before copying to my blog—preview it, change something, correct something else, preview and then hit publish. If I’m really lucky I catch any errors before it goes out to my subscribers. I had to do it with this post, too.” Sigh”

Do you watch TV – if so, what are some of your favorite shows?

I’m not a big TV watcher, but when I’m in a mood (if the glass is close to empty) I’ll turn it on so I don’t have to think about anything. There are a couple shows I try to always watch—Scandal, Hell on Wheels, Dancing with the Stars, Top Gear, Longmire, and some movies on the Hallmark Channel. If anyone knows me personally, they’ll see why I like Hell on Wheels. Bad boy weakness syndrome for those of you who don’t know me. I always go to bed at night with the Golden Girls. Watch it—I mean with them on my TV. I have to laugh at Gus who gave me this award—sometimes I watch Duck Dynasty too, usually if my son is home. Don’t tell, but I got a great line for my book from the show. Video of HoW is for season two. Waiting diligently for Season 3 to begin.

Now I have to nominate a few bloggers to give this award to. Ready?

      Debra Andrews

      Teagan Geneviene

      Christine Rice

Barbara Conelli (I nominate Barb for this award, but she is on hiatus at the moment.)

      Michelle Proulx

Virginia Plantation (When they open I’m going here on my  own personal writing retreat.)

Lord David Prosser (David, I’m giving you this award because you deserve it. I know you’re going through a difficult time, and I want you to have the Sunshine Award because you need some sunshine right now. No need to answer the questions. My gift to you.)

    • Relaxing, My Way

      Posted at 11:36 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on January 29, 2012

Today I couldn’t come up with my own idea for a brain dump. Imagine that. Who can’t do a five minute brain dump after a whole week of STUFF happening? So, I’m borrowing Fadra’s prompt today about a detail describing a way I like to relax. Here I go with one of the ways–

When I want to relax, it usually involves a romantic comedy on TV. I’ve gotten into watching TV again. For many previous years I didn’t, and that’s a whole other brain dump. I must have been really relaxed over the Christmas holidays because I bombarded myself with watching the Hallmark  and Hallmark Movie channels and the Lifetime and Lifetime Movie Channels. They had so many cute Christmas themed shows and I enjoyed each and every one. I actually long for the romantic comedy now since Lifetime usually has movies along the lines of women’s fiction or drama and when I want to relax, I don’t want to have to figure out a crime or what will happen next. I only want to be entertained.

I’ll pour a glass of wine, or make some popcorn; sometimes both, or just have nothing but the movie and remote. If all else fails and I can’t find something I’m in the mood for, I can stick a DVD in the player and have at it with my own choice of movie, relax, take a deep breath, and be carried away with something that isn’t even close to my own reality. Escaping is what you might call my way of relaxing, but it helps and makes it easier to fall asleep with my heated blanket, and peaceful thoughts to chase away the nightmares.

This was my 5 minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post. It’s five minutes of your time and a brain dump. Want to try it? Here are the rules…

      • Write an intro to the post if you want but don’t edit the post. No proofreading or spellchecking. This is writing in the raw.

    • Good Friendships Never Fade (Stream of Consciousness Sunday)

      Posted at 3:58 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on September 4, 2011

One day this week I went to the movies with one of my long time friends, whom I haven’t seen in quite some time. It’s kind of strange how you can remain friends, even without constant communication. The last time I saw her was a year ago, but before that it was probably three or four years. Since I was the one to move away, I wanted to make sure to keep in touch, although this friend and I didn’t remain in contact unless I was in town, and I’d call her so we could get together. I called her when I arrived in town for a visit last week.

We met for dinner one night a few days before the movies, and found out we both wanted to see The Help, so that’s what we went to see. When we used to work together we got along very well and became friends immediately. Maybe we won’t see each other again for quite some time, but I know our friendship will remain strong.  Do you have friends like this where you can make a phone call and pick up where you left off?  I cherish my long time friendships.

This was my 5 minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post. It’s five minutes of your time and a brain dump. Want to try it? Here are the rules…
