    • NaNo-Who-Wha…Huh?

      Posted at 7:07 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on November 17, 2014

      Count Down:

November is more than half over. Isn’t that scary if you don’t want time to fly by so fast? Or, maybe you’re like me—still stuck in June. I believe I moved into September. Yes, that does sound better and doesn’t make me look quite like the hermit I am. Oh, not hermit…writer. Excuse me, I, er…um, meant writer. Don’t judge. 😉

This finds us Wrimos more than half way through NaNoWriMo. (National Novel Writing Month)

      Time for an Update:

Mary is ahead of the game. Remember back to the end of October when I wasn’t sure I wanted to do, or might not have time for, #NaNoWriMo 2014? I pulled it together but my second round of edits are due back, so that’ll take some time away. I like to stay ahead of the game (word count) if possible.

      About my NaNo Manuscript:

Oh, boy. This story is taking me on a whole other path. No, not really… I wanted to see if you were paying attention. I plotted out most of the storyline, but still, I’m going down a path I had doubts about when plotting took place. It is taking me on a path where I don’t know the outcome. That doesn’t mean I don’t know the story ending. It means I don’t know the outcome of this particular scene.

To get a feel of my “what if” scenario, I wrote ahead to get an idea of how this scene should/ could play out. The scene leaves me with two choices.

Of course I’m not telling. Sorry, not trying to be rude. *Wink* You already know that, right? Okay.

At this point, I’ll say no more about said manuscript. I’ll show you my progress instead. I’ve had fun writing Book Three in the Double Dutch Ranch Series so far. The stats page shows my last update from Monday November 17th, 2014 with 888 words for that day. Cool number. I know my word count was not met for the day.

Note: Last year on November 1st, I started Heartbreak’s Reward, Bk #2. It was published in September 2014. (A standalone novel.) The Romance Reviews Top Pick.

I’ll be back either later this week or next week with a cover reveal for my upcoming bonus book numbered 1.5 in the Double Dutch Ranch Series. If you’re on my mailing list, you’ll see it sooner. Mailing List signup HERE.

A couple weeks ago Word Press informed me that my blog was seven years old. Happy Belated Birthday to my blog.

      Have a great week.

    • Is It Time Again? To NaNoWriMo or Not?

      Posted at 12:15 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on October 13, 2014

Participant-2014-Web-Bannerquestion-mark a HUGE question to myself in 2014.

I’ve already added and anticipated a NaNo novel for 2014, but my decision is about 95% final. Consider my decision a BIG question mark.

National Novel Writing Month or better known as NaNoWriMo (NaNo)

From the NaNoWriMo About Page Click for more info including FAQ.

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 PM on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought fleetingly about writing a novel.

      My Page: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/maryjdressel

      Participant-2014-Square-Button

To NaNo or not to NaNo? This is my question of the month. Editing one book while writing another book fills my agenda for the rest of this year. This doesn’t include NaNo. I take that back because NaNoWriMo has been on my mind more than I care to think about. Is my muse betraying me by nudging [forcing] me to be consumed with it right now?

IF, and this is a big “IF” I do NaNoWriMo this year, I might have to be a Rebel. Yes, this counts and NaNo recognizes it.

I’ve been known to color outside of the lines.

But, there are some who don’t agree with being a REBEL. If writing 50K words to a novel in thirty days like everyone else, I see no difference. Of course we can’t count anything already written. Some of my close author friends don’t agree with being a Rebel, although no one has called me a cheater, in so many words.

This will be my fifth NaNoWriMo. How do I pass up a “five year” milestone?

      • How about you? Will you be a NaNo participant this year? Have you ever participated?
      • Have you heard of NaNoWriMo?

I ask this because even my local librarian never heard of it until I mentioned it to him. Not that he planned on doing anything about it. In my writers’ mind, I thought it would QuestionMark2be a good idea to have a write-in there. Not so with him. He wanted to know how much it would cost them and basically, was the least bit interested in finding out. *Eye Roll*

In 2015, I plan on bringing another book into the Bull Rider Series and this book could be my NaNo project. The thing is, nothing is planned for this book, except in my head. (Well, a vague plan…um, maybe.)

On the other hand, I’m also writing the third book in the Double Dutch Ranch series, and readers are waiting for this book. See my dilemma?

Believe me—going into NaNo with no plans can suck. This coming from a pantster. A pantster who has learned to plot, if that makes sense.

      In my own words:

      • Plotter=Your story is planned out from beginning to end.
      • Pantster=Sit down and write your little fingers to the bone by the seat of your pants. Better known as “just sit your butt down and write.”
      • Mary=A little bit of each. Maybe 89% plotter these days. In the past I was 87% pantster. The more writing I do, I’ve discovered the more I have to plot. I’ve published three full length books this year with one more planned. Yes, plotting has helped.

I’m anxious to hear if you’re a plotter or pantster.

Plotting and planning can happen to creative souls in general I’d think. I take photos of whatever I see unless I’m looking for something in particular. My son photographs foot races when he isn’t participating. He goes out days before to scope out the trail/route, etc., and plans out where he will take photos, at what shutter speed, lighting, and whatever else he comes up with for the perfect shot. He’s a plotter and doesn’t realize it. (I took this image while walking along a river trail. Someone painted this beneath an overpass. The photo wasn’t planned, but there it was waiting. Having my camera with me was planned.) I digress…

      • By the way, NaNoWriMo entails writing 50K words in thirty days, and boils done to 1,667 words a day. Some of my author friends write 5K a day or more.

Being a full tiWriter picme writer, making the word count won’t be a problem for me, but…as I said in the beginning, I’m working on two books now, and one is due out in December.

Now, if only my spell checker would agree to the way I spell NaNoWriMo and Pantster.

Stay tuned for the final decision…

We’ll Begin With a NaNoWriMo Update

2013-Winner-Facebook-ProfileReached Word count <50K> on day twenty-two. This is my fourth win in a row. I’ll continue to count words on the NaNo site until the end of the month. NaNo has a forum for anyone who wants to continue past November.

      My NaNoWriMo 2013 Book Details:

      Sensual Contemporary Western Romance

      • Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight #2
      • Working Title: I’m not releasing it yet. My working titles tend to be my final title.
      • Hero and Heroine: Jase Carlson & Brenna Page. This is Jase’s story. You’ll meet him in Cowboy Boss and his Destiny.
      • 55,786 Words (At the time of this posting) About 2K words were written with pen and paper while I went through a 4.5 day power outage.
      • 234 Pages
      • Status: Unfinished (I’m still working on this full-length novel)

I’d love to hear about your NaNoWriMo experience if you participated.

      Editing and Upcoming Book Information:

Cowboy Boss and his Destiny (Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight #1) Final round of edits went back to the editor. UPDATE: Final edits are finished! Available Now.

Hey, Cowboy (Bull Rider Series #2) Update: Available Now

This book is still with an editor. Not the same editor as Cowboy Boss. After being away from Velia and Caulder for so long, I’m looking forward to their story again.

Some of you are asking for this second book in the Bull Rider Series. I’m waiting for these edits to be returned. Still waiting.

      Plans

Books available so far in the Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight

      • #1      Cowboy Boss and his Destiny.
      • #2      Heartbreak’s Reward—Jase’s story.
      • #3      Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord. Dane, the youngest brother at the ranch stars in book three.
      • Lassoing the Last Dance
      • Next book coming in 2019.

I have a couple works in progress I’d like to see published in the coming year, but it’s so much fun writing western romance, that I’m not sure I want to leave it yet, and maybe I never will.

No matter if you’re a writer or not, do you have planned projects for 2014? Maybe I should ask this question on December 31st instead of now. Believe me, I’m not trying to rush this year.

As always, please feel free to follow my blog via email updates or the follow button. Thank you.

Happy holiday shopping. Be careful out there. I’d also like to extend a belated Thanksgiving wish to my fellow  American friends. Enjoy the rest of the weekend, everyone.

    • ReBlog: My NaNoWriMo Experience Has Evolved

      Posted at 10:06 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on November 2, 2013

Maybe you can learn some things from my past NaNo Experiences.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an expert in this. My three years and two days five years of NaNo wins is a drop in the bucket compared to some.

      Onward to year six.

This is about how my NaNoWriMo experience has evolved. I follow the rules (most) and I’ve learned a lot. But…my biggest rule breaker might be the one where I allow my inner-editor to sit on my shoulder. Heck, she can sit on my lap if she wants. I’ll share my M&M’s with her. After all, I’m used to sharing my chocolate with my stubborn little muse.

      question-markThe OLD Me:

      • Strikethroughs HEY YOU, yes you—do not delete that word. ← (The old me.)
      • Don’t Do not use contractions
      • Use plenty—I repeat, plenty of adverbs, adjectives, extra words of any kind to get your daily count. Make your character write a recipe or shopping list. (Oh, wait, maybe that’s just me. One of my heroines is Italian. Another character is a ranch mom with three grown boys/ men, and there are three ranch hands she considers part of her family. She and the Italian need shopping lists!)
      • Send the drill sergeant of an inner-editor away on a thirty day vacation
      • Misspell words, skip them and keep going. (Ekk, I hated this!)
      • I wrote run-on/fragmented sentences. (Still do)
      •  M’bad for all of the above?

Do you want to get your word count when you’re stumped? Go ahead, use the above ideas for yourself. Been there done that. Please, don’t remember who gave you some of these ideas when you start edits and revisions. Whatever you do, don’t throw your computer against the wall. (You will want to if you do a number of the above items.)

      The NEW NaNoWriMo Me:

      • I don’t have a strikethrough icon. (Shh, I really do, but don’t tell.)
      • Don’t use contractions? What? You don’t want to hear how many four-letter words I’ve used because of this.  I’m writing fiction here, I shall use contractions. Trying this will kill you in revisions—almost make you throw your computer out the window. And check the mirror. You’ll be missing some hair.
      • Adverbs, adjectives…I’m still torn on this. Yes, I use some. How about you?
      • If my inner-editor thinks she’s going on a vacation in November, she better think again. My inner-editor needs to remain right here on my shoulder beside Ms. Sexy Innocence—my muse.
      • Misspelled words. Absolutely not! I can’t do it. (If you find one here, let me know because I’m human. :-0) In all honesty, I do mix up words. My biggest is change, chance, and as of yesterday, right, write.)
      • Sentences? Okay I still do write fragmented sentences, even in my best work. I’ve read experts who say to use fragmented sentences as a variation. That’s good enough for me. I can’t fight against my “voice.”

My recommendation is to write as many words as you can, when you can. You will have days when you won’t be able to get your daily count. Life happens.

Now when I participate in NaNoWriMo, I do what is easiest for me. You need to find what works for you. Newbies, and never be ashamed to admit you’re a newbie, go ahead and learn what it takes to write 1,667 words a day (or more).

Being a full-time writer helps. I admit to this because my writing hours aren’t limited like they used to be. BUT…and yes, this is a big but—I’m trying to get two books written, so in reality, some of my time is limited. Haha, here we are in 2015, and I am still working on two books. Different ones, of course! Did I mention I just revised two books? They need to be reuploaded to book retailers when the formatter is finished.

nutsYes, I do tend to be a little nutty when it comes to making myself busier than I should be during NaNo. It will take some patience to stay away from my Netflix binge, too.

    • The Missing Author (Mary) Is Back

      Posted at 11:47 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on October 21, 2013

Waving! Hello out there. Remember me? Where have I been? Drowning in book writing and editing. You writers know what I mean. Not to mention a total blog-block. Try saying that fast. Let’s change it to blog-writing block.

So, if I’m so busy writing, how come you don’t see anything new published?

      You had to ask?

      • What’s going on with the Bull Rider Series: Still waiting on more edits on Hey, Cowboy. The first twenty chapters have been edited, fixed, and returned to the editor. Still hoping for a release this year.

FYI: I had an early review on Hey, Cowboy. A fabulous review I must say. I’d rather wait and have her post the review when the book comes out before saying more.

While I’m on the subject of the Bull Rider Series, I can say I’m considering rearranging the entire beginning of Howdy, Ma’am. More on that later.

      • Cowboy Boss and his Destiny. This is book one in the Double Dutch Ranch Series: (Love at First Sight.) It’s been through the first round of edits and my new editor sent the complete manuscript back to me, and I’m working on that. I’m also expecting this to be released this year. Expect a cover reveal for Cowboy Boss and his Destiny real soon. I want you all to meet Tristan and Nora. (I hope you love Tristan’s little girl, too.)

If you happened to see that blunder blog with the cover reveal about a month or more ago, forget you ever saw that, okay. It was a mistake and I hit publish instead of preview. Boggled brain at the time. I need a break. I have a draft ready for the cover reveal, but I’m waiting for the right time.

A short poll on Facebook told me most people like to see a cover reveal no more than a month out, some said two months, no more. A few said it didn’t matter. Some said less than a month. (I blew this whole idea by doing a cover reveal for Hey, Cowboy too soon. I expected it to be published by now though, or close.)

      Your opinion?

      • Yes, I’ve also skipped My Sexy Saturday for two weeks. This week I totally forgot about it. File this under needing a break.
      • NaNoWriMo: I am going to fit this in somewhere…when I can. This is my fourth year and I have to challenge myself. My edits come first of course. The novel for this year will be the second book in the Double Dutch Ranch Series: (Love at First Sight).

I’d like to invite you to follow or sign-up for email updates to stay informed of updates and news. Thanks!

One of these days I’ll be making an announcement for a new release.

    • Nineteen Thousand and Counting ~ NaNo 2012 Update

      Posted at 11:54 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on November 8, 2012

It’s been a week for NaNoWriMo, and it’s time for a quick update. I’ve been on a roll with this sequel. It’s full of surprises. I have followed my outline, but those ideas brought new ideas. This is one thing I love about writing—the surprises. I’m excited about this second book. (But I can’t get my heart away from the first book, yet.) A little suspense appeared, and I have no idea where it came from, or if it will turn into anything. It follows one of the ideas in my outline, so there’s a good chance this part will remain when all is said and done, and editing and revising takes place. One thing I can honestly say—it absolutely kills me when I have to put a hero or heroine through hell. My characters are strong enough to take it.

      But am I?

Each day, I write over the daily word count. Election Day was the only day I didn’t because I was engrossed in watching election happenings all evening. Most of my writing is during the day, but on Election Day I wasn’t home to write. I’ll catch up. LOL, I’m way over, what am I worried about? My advice has always been to Wrimo’s to write while you can, what you can, when you can because many times the “Oh no!” comes into play and something happens where you can’t write for a day or two.

The instant I started this novel, I knew I had a title. Now, I have mixed feelings. To see these two books side by side, yes, the title fits as part of the series, but there are parts in the book I like, and I might have to change titles. When I

      Credit line: © Margojh | Dreamstime.com

choose a title, I like to take a phrase from the book. Does it make sense? I dunno. It’s just me. There is plenty of time for this.

Now, a simple breakdown of where I am with this NaNoWriMo 2012 Novel:

      • Word Count: 19,014
      • Pages:              59
      • Chapter           15
      • Not as many strikethroughs as last year
      • I have deleted words.
      • I have written other scenes as they came to me, and stuck them at the end of the document so the words get counted. O_O exciting scenes!
      • I had to go back and fill in a brand new scene to match one of the surprises that popped up. Fun, really!
      • I have used contractions this year.

Last year I didn’t use contractions throughout part of the novel. Better to have two words counted instead of one. The editing in the end was frustrating. This year I’m trying to avoid all that. Yes, it breaks some rules. Rules I suggest to others. M’bad. Turns out my inner editor didn’t go on a long vacation.

Once again I’ll don my black leather jacket, because, yes, I’m a rebel. Again, m’bad.

The * NaNoWriMo stats page says at this pace I should be finished on November 21st. Last year I finished on November 29th and averaged 1,942 words a day. This year so far, I’m averaging 2,376 words a day. It was past 3K in the beginning, but with one day of not making the daily count, it dropped down.

Back to writing. Last night when I couldn’t get into it, I buckled down and wrote over 2K words, and had to get the count added to NaNo before midnight. I got in with two minutes to spare, and wrote twenty more words, and lost my Wi-Fi connection. Whew! At least my words were counted for yesterday. And the muse is still in a good mood. Yay!

      *My stats page.

Miss Sexy Innocence *rolls eyes* comes from Glitter-Graphics.com (Don’t tell her, but I think she will be my next tattoo. I’m not sure about her wings though. Maybe she’ll lose them by then.)

    • Mork and Mindy NaNo

      Posted at 11:22 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on October 1, 2012

Do you NaNo? LOL, no I’m not talking about Robin Williams and Mork and Mindy. Raise your hand if you know about Mork and Mindy?

Anyway, with one month until National Novel Writing Month begins, aka NaNoWriMo, aka NaNo, I find myself wondering what to do. It’s obvious I’ll be a Rebel this year. No, I’m not going back to my “bad girl” days. (Who me?) Being a NaNo Rebel means you will continue with a book you had already started, instead of starting a new one from scratch. There might be different rules, and I need to check this out, but it’s still writing fifty thousand words in thirty days.

Last year on the second day of November, I wrote a Thursday Thirteen post about thirteen things I had done in two days of NaNo. I’ll reblog it later.

Will you do NaNoWriMo this year? Have you done previous years? There are a lot of forums on their website to help. LinkedIn has more than one NaNoWriMo group and I’m in one with 500 members. Google Plus probably has many NaNo circles and I’m in one of them. Inspiration and encouragement are important aspects during the thirty days of literary abandon. It helps to have support when you can’t force another word from your muse. Muse? In reality, I think the muse takes a vacation.

      Note:

I heard they were purging the site early so if you’re a member, you can get your page set up sooner than last year.

      Posted at 10:52 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on November 25, 2011

Need I say more. Coming in today at 54,522 words. It’s been a long 25 days, but so much fun. I’m still working on my story; it’s far from finished. I’d love to post my cover and excerpt but I’m funny like that, and choose not to yet. Thank you fellow Nano’ers for all the support.  If you haven’t finished yet, have no fear, for you can do it too. Good luck!

    • Reblog: Thirteen Things I’ve Done With NaNoWriMo in Two Days

      Posted at 8:34 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on November 3, 2011

This is a Reblog from one of my previous NaNoWriMo years. My second day of NaNo happened to fall on a Thursday and I needed a Thursday Thirteen Meme for that day. If you’re new to NaNoWriMo, take a look, because you’ll probably find yourself doing the same thing, although I must admit, 10k words in two days might be a little rare. You have to get a jump on it when you can. Here goes–

When you’re writing 50,000 words in 30 days, forget the rules of writing. You’ll kick yourself in the rear for it when it comes to editing in December, but it’s all part of it. For the 30 days of working on your Nano novel, just WRITE.

      1. Wrote a lot of Words so far using as few contractions as possible

      2. Created many paragraphs 🙂

      3. Shame on me for using too many adjectives

      4. Yikes, lots of adverbs

      5. Misspelled words

      6. Drank a lot of Coffee

      7. Deleted  a few words, sentences . . . (Shhh, don’t tell)

      8. Wrote run-on sentences

      9. Challenged myself to sprints

      10. Wrote almost 10,000 words in less than 3 days (Will be over 10,000 by tonight)

      11. Stayed in jammies most of the first day

      12. Created a dilemma for myself and the characters

      13. Used a lot of strikethroughs instead of deleting

NOTE: I can see my editor cringing right now if she reads this.

Update: Well, here it is, October 2015 and it’s time to update this post. First off, I no longer do what that above lists suggest. Nope, not anymore. Of course the above list follows the rules. Each year I participated, brought new experiences, and I’ve learned a lot since then.
