    • Revisions? Questions Answered

      Posted at 4:09 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 19, 2018

I thought I’d begin by sharing a quote I saw on Twitter today by Paul Coelho. I love this author. You can find his books everywhere and he posts quotes on his Facebook and Twitter pages.  🙂  I should’ve thought of him when I wrote the post about authors I’d like to meet. Here’s his quote:

Before a new chapter is begun, the old one has to be finished: tell yourself that what has passed will never come back.
Remember that there was a time when you could live without that thing or that person
Nothing is irreplaceable, a habit is not a need. ~Paul Coelho

      But now I go forward…

A couple weeks ago I wrote a post titled Making the Old New Again about a major revision I’m doing with Cowboy Boss and his Destiny and Tristan’s Destiny in my Double Dutch Ranch Series. I had a lot of questions unanswered by the end of the post. Now I have answers.

The questions to myself or anyone who had answers:

Will this new version be a 2nd edition?

      • No, this will not be a 2nd edition.

Will I delete the original 1st editions and start all over? Will retailers allow me to do this?

      • Yes and no. I will re-upload over the original version of Cowboy Boss and his Destiny. TRISTAN’S DESTINY, Bonus Book 1.5 will be deleted and no longer available as a single book.
      • We are allowed to delete eBooks. We cannot delete paperbacks.

Will I re-upload this over the original book #1 then delete or unpublish the original book #1.5, which doesn’t show up in my series, anyway?

      • Yes. Answered above. I will not lose the Cowboy Boss reviews this way.

This wasn’t included in my questions because I knew the answer, but I’ll clarify this now. What about my reviews for Tristan’s Destiny?

Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books, western romance, Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse

      • I have lost those reviews since both books are now unpublished and not available. However, I haven’t deleted the books, so reviews are still there with the unpublished files in my KDP Bookshelf in case I ever wanted to republish. I did copy them to be safe.

I will use the reviews in other ways like in the Editorial Review section on my book page where we are allowed to post snippets of a review. For those of you who have left reviews for Tristan’s Destiny, thank you. They are much appreciated. They will not go unseen.

Will I have a new cover designed?

      • Yes, I already have it!  ❤  ❤  My designer is amazingly fast. It took us her three drafts. It consisted of doing a lot more than sticking new people on the cover.  I’ll forever love my original cover for Cowboy Boss, but since the story has shifted, this new cover is perfect.

Did I mention this book went to the editor today?  🙂

Well, now that I’ve taken care of my own questions and answers, I must admit… It took me two weeks to decide to unpublish. Right after, I nearly hyperventilated. I had to take deep breaths and laps around my apartment. My chest hurt. I thought I might have a heart attack. Then, suddenly, the tension of making the decision rolled off my shoulders.

Revising this book was a good thing. Of course, I won’t know how others feel about it until I re-publish. What will I do if readers hate it? This is a question we ask ourselves anyway. No more questions, please (I tell myself)!

      A Positive?

I got to know my characters all over again. Well, I visit with them in every book because they continue to make their appearances if only subtly. In fact, I learned something new about a few of them. After all this time, I discovered Tristan had a dark cloud hanging over him I never caught before. This was something new to use in my rewrite. The biggest shock of all? Tristan’s ranch foreman threw in a huge surprise, then it was like Hell YEAH. BINGO! Problem solved for an upcoming book.

This business is a marathon not a sprint and life is continuously changing.

      Next Step?

I need to update the front and back matter to all my books. I started last night and it wasn’t a quick copy and paste thing because I also had to rewrite a bit of the front matter, part of my notes to readers, and whatever else I found to update.  In the meantime, I have another hero and heroine mad at me for making them wait so long right at the most inopportune time (for them). They should be all hot and bothered by time I get back to them.   ❤

I’ve turned off sharing. This is for you who have already read the first post , or newcomers.  A girl can change her mind.

Y’all have a productive and fun week Thanks for reading.

    • #AmWriting ~Western Romance Teaser~ Lassoing the Last Dance

      Posted at 5:19 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on April 26, 2017

It’s been a hectic week but I still have to work. Here’s a little teaser for y’all. Roxanne  has strolled down to the barn with Trista Rose, a toddler and runs into Tristan, and eventually Randy. Do you remember Nora and Tristan from earlier in the series? Nora is Roxanne’s best friend. This excerpt is slightly modified from the original.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western romance, series romance

“How you doing, Tristan?” Roxanne smiled to think of Nora with this handsome, good-natured cowboy, and she couldn’t help but smile at him.

“Pretty good,” said Tristan. “Nora said you might want to ride. How about taking Betsy? You’ve ridden her before. She’s good to go.”

“Sweet!” Roxanne had an attachment for this horse from the earlier times she had visited and rode with Nora. “I’d love to ride her.” Roxanne put her hand on his arm. “I appreciate you and Nora so much. Thank you.”

      “I’ll saddle her for you—”

“No, I need to do it myself. If I’m going to start living… Well, you know what I mean. It’s something I have to do, Tristan.”

“All righty, if you’re sure. Remember, the mounting block is right outside the barn if you need it.” Tristan wiggled his daughter’s hand. “Tell Roxanne you’ll see her later.”

“Bye!” She waved like a little child actress.

“I love you, Trista Rose. See you later. Tristan, tell Nora you have her now?” Tristan nodded. “I’ll text her.” She entered Betsy’s stall. “How you doing, girl? Ready for some fun? I’ll be right back.”

Mary j McCoy-Dressel, western romance, lassoing the last danceInside the tack room, she eyed the saddles, bridles, and blankets. Hmm, maybe she should’ve let Tristan put it on for her. Setting that old sissy idea aside, she gathered the blanket and placed it on the post near Betsy. “Hold on.” Running her hand over her long, black mane, she left for the tack room again. While reaching for a saddle, hands clenched her shoulders, and slid down her arms to entwine their fingers. She was bathed in heat as the weight of his strong body pressed against her. “Mmm…”

“Let me do it for you this time, darlin’.”

His hot body remained against her and his lips went to her neck. For sure, she wouldn’t mind having him right here in the tack room, if there were a guarantee Tristan’s ranch hands wouldn’t walk in. Her heart went thumpity, thump, and if she had doubted sweating earlier, now it was obvious. She leaned her head against him and squeezed his hands. The fact he cozied up like this excited her. “Hi, Randy. I saw you busy out there.”

The scent of him wafted through her nostrils, and whatever it was in his makeup, it sucked the sense out of her. Her heart almost matched the cadence of his beating against her back. She turned in his arms and their lips immediately connected in a sensuous rage. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and gave the kiss everything it deserved. Roxanne wanted more when it came to an end. She peered up into lustful eyes. “What a nice surprise.”

“Yeah, imagine that.” Randy glanced around the tack room, then rested his gaze on the opened door. “How bad do you want to ride?”

“Oh, very, very badly, cowboy. You have no idea.”

“I’m talking about Betsy. What are you talking about?”

      End of Excerpt

Whew! I feel the same way about Randy…

This might be the longest excerpt I’ve ever posted. If you got through the whole thing, thanks for reading. It could’ve been longer, but I deleted some at the beginning. Twice.

    • Short Snippet Saturday & National Drink Wine Day!

      Posted at 3:08 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 18, 2017

Greetings! It has been eons since I’ve done a snippet on Saturday. Well, this headline is fitting in two ways. For today’s snippet, I planned on doing an excerpt from Dane’s book because I have two promos going on. One at Bargain Booksy and one at Robin Reads. And, the book is on sale! The book sits at #16 right now in Contemporary Western Fiction at Amazon. Wahoo.

      mary j mccoy-dressel, western romance

Another reason Dane’s book is fitting is because it’s National Drink Wine Day. Gracelyn, the heroine in this book, is a Guild Wine Master. Cheers!

Today my snippet comes to you in the form of a graphic. I checked to see if I posted this before, and I didn’t find it in my search. My apologies if you did read this in a previous post or my newsletter. Settle back with your favorite wine and sip as you read.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance

Gracelyn enters at the perfect time. She thinks she’s pulling a fast one over on Dane about her choice of wine. Sometimes Dane speaks before he thinks. A couple more beers at this meeting with Gracelyn, he might’ve said more. Yes, he’s drinking beer after his flight to Ft. Benning is delayed. Delayed all right. Delayed until the next day. Need I say more?   ❤ ❤

I have an opened bottle of Prosecco, a sparkling wine, for later. If you drink wine, do you have a favorite you’d like to recommend? Remember– “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk.” Salute!

I appreciate your visit today. Thanks for taking the time.

    • What If You’re Alone on Valentine’s Day?

      Posted at 10:20 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 14, 2017

Happy Valentine’s Day, dear blog readers!

      valentines day 4

For twas not into my ear you whispered
      But into my heart
Twas not my lips you kissed
      But my soul
      ~Judy Garland

I put a lot of time into a post I’d written a long time ago, and I still like that post for Valentine’s Day. It’s titled Alone on Valentine’s Day?

Why would a romance writer want to write about being alone on Valentine’s Day? I believe in Happily-Ever-After, Love at First Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romanceSight, and being Swept off my Feet, and I have been, and have experienced, each of these. I continue this in my writing…live for it, in fact.  ❤ Many are alone on Valentine’s day for many different reasons, so why not write about being alone on this day for lovers?

Many of you long time followers have read the post I’m directing you to, but many of you are new, so if you’d like to read my suggestions for being alone on Valentine’s Day, please enjoy at the following link:

      Alone on Valentine’s Day

Many of you have already read the interview I did for Valentine’s Day with the legendary cover model, C.J. Hollenback. If you’re new, you can read it yourself right HERE.

      Author note:

I’m considering asking another cover model for an interview. He’s on an upcoming book. It all depends on his time and my time, so don’t hold me to this. He’s too adorable and friendly not to be introduced. Plus, he was a great inspiration for my Randy in Lassoing the Last Dance. I hope you think so when I do a cover reveal.

      Last but certainly not least:

You have to try this cake by Suzanne at A Pug In The Kitchen Food Blog. Her recipes suzannes-cakesend my brain into a lip-licking tizzy! The photographs of her dishes alone make my mouth water. Image used with permission from Suzanne. And, you’ll see why her blog is called what it is called:

Whatever Tomorrow Brings… Their only choice is acceptance.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romanceEnjoy a surprise excerpt from Dane’s book.

      From Chapter One:

Today, Judy Carlson tried to be strong for her family’s sake, yet her vow not to cry betrayed her. Dane, her youngest, prepared for his fourth extended tour of duty. He’d be gone in a matter of hours. She folded her arms across her chest while standing at the window in her bedroom—the majestic Superstition Mountain looking back at her. Dane headed to the barn after his ride through the desert. As soon as he untacked the horse, he would barge through the back door. Judy listened. Waited. A few moments later the back door slammed as she expected.

Tapping on the bedroom door drew her attention. She inhaled a big breath and blew it out. “Just a minute,” she said, grabbing a tissue to dab at the wetness on her cheeks and tossed it into the wicker trash basket beside her desk.

      “Mom? Can I come in?”

Dane. She summoned up the strength to hold it together. “Come in.”

When he entered, he closed the door behind him. She forced a smile and walked around her queen-sized sleigh bed toward him.

He stuffed his hands into his front pockets and took a minute before making eye contact. “Can we talk?”

“Definitely.” Their eyes met, and for a moment she saw that blond-headed, blue-eyed boy asking for a cookie. She held her arms out and they hugged.

He patted her back while she patted his. “It’ll be okay, Mom. I hate leaving you guys to worry. You know I’ll be home before you realize it.” His voice came out with an unfamiliar cracking.

No, she didn’t. Every day was like a hundred piled into one while he was in combat. “I understand.” She lied. “Have you changed your mind about us coming to the base for the deployment send-off?” Send off? Like hell. Sending him off and not knowing if he’d return? It tore at her heart each time. “We can get plane tickets.” Judy wrinkled her nose at the familiar barn smells of hay and horses, on her son.

Dane stood straight, taking a minute before speaking. He nonchalantly brushed his hair back. “No, not this time.” He took a seat on her bed like he’d done as a teenager who needed answers to some big problem, like what shirt to wear on his first date. His eyes lowered. “It’s not only hard on all of you.”

It had to be hard for him to admit. “I understand.” Judy slipped her arm around his waist when she sat beside him, and leaned her head against his broad shoulder. “Why did you have to sign up again?” Oh, Lord, she shouldn’t be making it more difficult, because the choice wasn’t always his.

Dane sat sideways to face her. With seriousness in his eyes and a tilt to his head, he calmly said, “You know why—this is my job.”

Judy nodded. She knew why all right. Because he had to Ranger up. Well, she’d rather he did giddy-yup out in the Sonoran Desert instead of some desert thousands of miles away. She peered out the window to watch for a moment as the horses galloped in the pasture. An image of peacefulness. “Because this is what you do.”

Thank you for stopping by today.

    • The Cowboy Continues– Update on Book #2 and Other Musings

      Posted at 4:41 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 11, 2013

Update on the Second Book in the Bull Rider Series

couple_thumb.jpgWell, as it is right now book two sits at 103,445 words. Don’t get excited. That will change. I think it’s funny because I wanted this book to be around 60,000 to 80,000 words. It still could be…but not too likely. There are a lot of revisions to make. UPDATE: 3/16 You don’t even want to know how long this book is now. Two books in one–a bundle. Yes, you will get two books in one. You will not be sorry. (My editor is going to shoot me.)

Do you have a length preference in the books you read?

I have to call it “this” book— because I don’t have a title. Sure, I have a lot of ideas, and some of those 103K words are title suggestions I added to the top of QuestionMark2my document so I can look at them when I open it. Twenty-one potential titles if you really must know. I have lots of ideas, but nothing speaks to me. Well, maybe two say something, but I’m not sure. (Not the ones included here.)

I went as far as looking at background photos for a cover to go with one title I like. I must say this kind of bothers me because I usually have a title right away. To be honest, I did have a title when I began this, but it’s debatable now. One of my friends gave me a suggestion. What do you think?

      The Cowboy’s Ma’am

      Cowboy’s Ma’am

She said it will be perfect beside Howdy, Ma’am.

“This” book is broken up into two parts. I’m considering three parts. I always wanted to do that. I think it goes back to my young days of reading romance novels. I’m surprised I don’t write bodice-rippers. There’s still time. Big Grin! Something from those old days of reading romance novels, slipped into Howdy, Ma’am  Book #1 and my editor would have slapped my hands if she could reach me. Joelle you know what I’m talking about. Don’t tell on me!

Thisimage.png book excites me—makes me laugh—it makes me cry. Yes, I’ve been through many emotions writing this one. I <–think I need a lot of what this picture is. Also, wait till you meet the new characters I brought in.

I’m writing as fast as I can—well, I have been distracted lately. I even thought I image.pngcould do a “quick” book for Valentine’s Day. It reached just over 3000 words, but book two called me back. I’ll finish itimage.png one day.

At this moment, I have three images set aside for the basic cover image, and I know my cover designer Dawné Dominique will do magic with whichever I choose. One is similar to Howdy, Ma’am. The second is on the sensual side. Number three idea melts my heart. See, another dilemma. Have no fear Jimmy Thomas will still adorn the cover of book two with the same female model. My Velia and Caulder.

But you know what? I love my job because I know one day in the near future, book two will have a title, a cover, and will be available for readers to enjoy.

      Real Quick

It won’t be long before Howdy, Ma’am Book #1 is available in <–paperback.

You’ve heard me mention my heroine’s name–Velia. Have you ever wondered where that name came from? I’ll explain in a future post.

Look for a post about Valentine’s Day in the next day or two. It’s for singles. Why? I’m single, and so are some of you. Why not? paper-and-pen

      13. Kodak Digital Easy Share Point and Shoot with zoom

dreamstime_s_10837833Most of the time when I do something I do it for a reason. Let’s take this list of camera equipment. It all pertains to photography, which happens to be my hobby. Something I love almost as much as I love writing.

*Since I wrote Howdy, Ma’am and Hey, Cowboy, it’s important that you know my hobby is photography because my new heroine is a photographer. She’s a former travel photographer, settling down in her own business now. I have never been a travel photographer although I have done some traveling and took a lot of pictures.

Traveling and taking pictures doesn’t make me a travel photographer. A while ago I took two photography classes at a local community college. I do know a little bit about taking pictures.

I wanted you to know that as the writer I have some experience with photography which I believe qualifies me to create a character who is a photographer. I would love to trade my film camera body in for a digital SLR because I love the lenses I already have and can’t see giving them up. (UPDATE: I now use the Canon Rebel Digital SLR with my old lenses.) I must admit these 13 items are a lot of weight to carry around. With this being one of the reasons, I’ve since been looking at smaller digital cameras. The last time I took a flight, every piece of my camera equipment was manually checked.

Getting through Detroit Metro Airport was bad enough, but getting through security at a small airport in California to come home was worse. Every piece of my camera equipment was gone over–checked and double checked. So was I! Not to mention, I was the only one on the plane to be pulled aside. Therefore, I was the last one on the plane, a small prop job going to San Francisco. A trip to remember either way. Since I got a little off topic here, I will end this now. 🙂

    • My Dark Side is Showing

      Posted at 2:35 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on December 14, 2007

vampirus.jpgWhile working on my paranormal romance, I discovered it’s taking a dark turn.  That must mean my dark side is coming out.  I started writing a scene that has been lingering around in my mind for awhile, wondering where I could use it.  Well, I found the right place.

Before I knew it, right there in front of my eyes, the words appeared on the monitor.  And I liked them!  This is right for this story, for my fang-baring, beautiful vampirus.  The part I like most is you, the reader, won’t even know about it until she announces it.  She’s kept it a secret!  Whether or not she will delve into her fetish again, in front of you, is yet undecided.  This is new even for me right now.  It’s going to be fun, so stay tuned.
