Lassoing the Last Dance is my featured book this month. Enjoy a rather long excerpt.

Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight™ #4

To set it up for you:

Previously, Randy and Roxanne shared a long-distance relationship. Roxanne had cut it off after a year with no explanation, and their mutual friends, Nora and Tristan remained tight-lipped. Now, Roxanne has moved back to Canyon Junction™ without telling Randy. His heart has never healed from losing her, but when he finds out she moved back, he can’t stay away.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western romance, series romance, book cover, cowboy, barn, two horses

He slowed down a bit when he neared her house. Indeed, her pickup sat in the driveway. A decal of sparkly red cowboy boots had remained in the rear window. He got out and went to the other side for the basket, but now the idea seemed silly again. He left it. Albeit, he trudged up the steps, knocked on the door. Hoped for the best. Sighed. To his surprise, a guy opened. Well, hell, this is uncomfortable.

“Yeah?” was all the stern-faced, square-jawed guy said when he pushed open the outside door.

“Is Roxanne around tonight?” He held eye contact with the man, having no clue who he was. Of all people, it better not be her ex-husband. If so, Randy might deck him right there just for the reason of all the things he had done to Roxanne in the past. Then he’d be disappointed in her for having him here. Was this guy her so-called story?

      “I’ll get her. Hold on.”

All he did was yell for her, not go get her. Asshole.

She emerged with widened eyes and a gasp. “R-Randy.”

He tapped his heel against the porch and his breath caught when she appeared. He was right about her hair. It was darker blonde than it used to be. Straight now, not wavy like before. Her eyes remained fixed on him as she stood there. Spectacular light blue eyes. A long skirt with vertical stripes looked great on her, making her appear taller than he’d remembered.

Finding his voice, he began, “I stopped by to welcome you back to Canyon Junction.”

She turned to whoever was inside, “I’ll be right in.” Roxanne stepped out the door, waited a moment, then strode to the glider to take a seat. “I’m rather shocked to see you here, Randy.”

Had she limped? “I bet. You didn’t tell me you were coming back. Hard to hide things in a small town.” Gulping, he nodded toward the door. “It’s not like you had to let me know. I’ll take off. I didn’t know you had company.” He stepped down two steps and removed keys from his pocket. “You take care, Roxanne. Nice to see you again.”

      “Randy? Wait.”

He peered at her while trying to get his heart back in its place. A painful look appeared on her face—something between a scowl and shooting daggers. He gripped the handrail and didn’t make an attempt to move. Was she about to lambaste him? Well, he had a few things to throw right back.

In a soft voice, she asked, “Will you come back and have a seat?”

Randy nodded toward the door again. “Maybe another time if you don’t mind.”

“That’s my cousin inside. He’s always been like a brother to me, and he drove my vehicle here from Broken Arrow while I flew to arrive early. He was here when I got back from Nora’s tonight. I mentioned Brett to you before.”

Yeah, so long ago that he’d forgotten. He went up the steps and took a seat beside her. Her subtle yet sensual fragrance brought back the memory of her in his arms. So much so that he wouldn’t mind taking her into his arms and closer to her perfume. “Where’s your cousin live?”

“Near my dad’s new condo outside of town, but he was kind enough to help me out by doing the driving himself. Tonight, he’ll be staying and helping out tomorrow here at the house. There’s so much work to do to make it mine.” She glanced down at clasped hands in her lap.

Tension lay thick between them. Something was different about her. Roxanne looked frail, downtrodden. He wanted to hold her, or at least pick up those clasped hands. “My place too. It is how it is, and I don’t know what would make it mine. I see it as my parent’s home.”

“The Circle D Ranch was theirs a long time ago.” Her hands wrung, then she clenched them together again. He must’ve made her nervous, or angry. “Well, Nora’s mom, Sandy, was nice enough to sell this house to me once she realized she wasn’t able to move back home from her son, Brody’s. She was happy it was me who bought it. Everything worked out.”

She stared at him straight on, a slight tilt to her head. It made his heart race even faster because she was in the right position to be kissed. “It’ll be a good place for you.” He shifted sideways and used his foot to make the glider move in a slow glide. He lowered his hand over hers in her lap. Her soft skin felt nice next to his, but her hands were cold. “I better go. It was great to see you again. Maybe I’ll see you around town, huh?”

Her throat tightened then her lips parted. Had she wanted to say more? His own words didn’t come out right away. He stood. “Have a nice night.” She took his hand, pulling on it quite hard to stand. “You okay, Roxanne?”

A car driving past grabbed her attention for a moment. “Yeah, sure.” She clenched his hand tighter and made eye contact, their gazes holding beneath a muted sky. “Nice seeing you again, too. I suspect we’ll see each other around. Small town living, you know.”

“Yup. Rox?” He hesitated and couldn’t, shouldn’t ask why she seemed so different. “Night.” Randy rushed off the porch and got in his truck. He breathed like he had run a mile down the road. She stood there with both hands on the railing. Was it that simple for her to just say good-bye without as much as a reason? Shit. He opened the door, grabbed the fruit basket from the seat, and took it up the steps. He set it on the glider since she didn’t seem prepared to take it herself. “Night.”

Down the steps and back at his truck, he shifted into gear and pulled out of the driveway feeling more like an idiot than anything else. On the way home, he observed the mountain standing in the glow of the moon, which had slipped out from an opening in the clouds. Maybe love wasn’t meant for a man like him.

    • #AmWriting Strength in Numbers~ Are You An Indie Author?

      Posted at 11:15 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on May 4, 2018

Good morning. It’s Friday and you might be expecting a post for the #MFRWauthor 52-Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop, but today’s topic would take too long for me to explain. Sorry, I know that sounds lazy, but if you lived in my shoes these past couple months you’d get it.

This is a long way of saying I’m neglecting the challenge topic, but for those interested in hopping over, here you go: Week 18: How I work up Character/Setting Profiles.

Hang on. Don’t stop reading yet.

There’s more here today and the reason I’m writing this…

      Listen Up Indie Authors:

I don’t send out posts like this often, if ever, but today I have something else to mention. Something of importance to Indie Authors. I’ve mentioned author Marie Force before, and if you don’t know who she is, you should. She’s an author’s friend, but the reason why I’m writing this section is because she’s an Indie author’s friend, too. I’m not only talking about romance authors here. However, Marie does write romance.

Before you run off and gag at the thought of this being for and about romance–WAIT. Keep in mind, I write ROMANCE so don’t hurt my feelings by gagging publically.  🙂  This is for the entire Indie author community.

Marie has started an Indie Author Support Network. This Network is to give a voice to Indie authors.

This new Indie Author Support Network–Marie and its members–can speak up and be a voice at the table. She can explain it a lot better than I can, so to learn more, please visit Indie Author Support Network before deciding to say no right off. I joined a couple weeks ago. Just so you know, there is a small membership fee. You can also find the network on Twitter.

In addition, if you aren’t interested in getting in on the ground floor as a founding member of the Indie Author Support Network above, you might be interested in joining Marie’s group on Facebook called Author Support Network. This group is for ALL authors whether trad published, hybrid, or Indie, and has been around a while now and has over 6,000 members–Authors Only. To join the group, you will be asked three mandatory entry questions. Don’t sweat it because they’re simple and want to be sure you’re an author. She also has a Yahoo Group Newsletter if you’re interested in something like that.

      ALL authors.

      All genres.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve learned by being a member of this Facebook group. I sat silent for about a year and just took it all in. With the amount of authors in this group, someone has an answer for anything you ask.

Anyway, this is my spiel for today.  🙂  If I didn’t believe in the future of the Indie Author Support Network or the Facebook group, I wouldn’t be telling you about it.

Me, I’ll be finishing up my privacy policies so my Website and Newsletter are GDPR compliant, and hoping to do it before a big storm comes in with strong winds.

On the positive side, spring has arrived.

      Enjoy your weekend.

    • #AmWriting Books: Making The Old New Again

      Posted at 3:21 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 4, 2018

Hello everyone. I’ve been neglectful of posting on my blog, and I apologize for not getting around to yours, either. I do miss visiting with you. I’m making my appearance on Facebook and Twitter to stay updated. Yes, I’m still here, but my blog is lonely. Remember, at the end of 2017 one of the writing topics for the 52-Week Blog Challenge was about resolutions. One of my writing goals mentioned a major revision on two books. I’m deep into this as we speak. #LifeGoesOn

In other words, I’m consumed with this project and working long hours each day—ten to twelve hours while arguing with my muse at night to put down her lariat and go to sleep.

I’m not only revising one book, but two, because Nora and Tristan had two books.

Why would I do this to myself? When I finish my revisions, this will be one complete book where part of the first book will flow into the second book as one complete story.

Part of one book you ask? This was the culprit keeping me awake at night, but after two weeks, I figured it out. The books are Cowboy Boss and his Destiny and Tristan’s Destiny, Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight. I’ve deleted over 90K words from Cowboy Boss and his Destiny #1  and a little from Tristan’s Destiny #1.5. Take that, book pirates!

      New Cover

Cowboy Boss will never be the same book as it is now, and in fact, I’m getting ready to pull these two books from publication until the revision is finished, reedited, and formatted. It’ll be fine for new readers to begin the series with Heartbreak’s Reward, book #2 in the series or Whispers of Forever, book #1 in the spin off series.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books, western romance, Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse

Does this sound easy? I hope you said no. It is not easy.

Another reason for doing this is because I have learned so much and come a long way since I wrote Cowboy Boss. This book no longer reflects the other books in my series, nor does it reflect my writing of today. Therefore, this no longer fits as my series starter. So, yes, I’m doing this major revision for my future. Am I taking a chance by doing this? Yes. Am I hesitant about doing this? No. (not any more.) Am I scared about doing this? Terrified.

If you’re a writer, you’ve probably heard that writing is a marathon not a sprint. Consider this another mile in my marathon. #WritersLife

Oh, woe is me… The life of a writer. Oh, for joy… The life of a writer!

Cowboy Boss and his Destiny had originally been written as a standalone happy-go-lucky holiday story. It never turned out to be a holiday story or a single-title book. When I first wrote the book, I knew about half way through, this would start a series. Sure, it is a happy-go-lucky love story, but…

A reviewer called it a Hallmark movie with sex. However, the comment wasn’t meant to be positive. This book has its lovers and haters. (Read my Open Door Closed Door post.) To add some angst and more emotion and conflict to Nora and Tristan’s life, I gave them book 1.5, which will be added to the new version of Cowboy Boss as a complete story that flows together as one. LESS than a fourth of Cowboy Boss readers are reading book 1.5, anyway, but a lot of that book was necessary to further the series.

I’ve saved around 10K of Cowboy Boss before it blends into the new version where Tristan and Nora’s bond is put to the test and takes my characters on a more dramatic journey in this new version of Cowboy Boss and his Destiny, #1.

There are many dilemmas facing me as I decide how to publish this BRAND-NEW version:

      • Will this new version be a 2nd edition? If this is a 2nd edition, the original versions will remain with reviews intact.
      • Will I delete the original 1st editions and start all over? Will retailers allow me to do this? I want the original versions to disappear.
      • Will I re-upload this over the original book #1 then delete or unpublish the original book #1.5, which doesn’t show up in my series, anyway? Regardless, book 1.5 will go away one way or another. Of course, the reviews will go with it, and this book gets the best reviews. I’ve saved them.

While I’m on the subject of reviews: Reviews help tell readers, someone is at least reading the book. No reviews make it look like the book is just sitting there unread. Who wants to take a chance on that book?

Whoops, I digressed from the topic here—revising books.

I hear a lot about upcoming or new authors not wanting to self-publish. I get where you’re coming from. I had to make that choice once.

Making a revision like this to benefit my writing career would never be possible if I hadn’t published these two books myself. Nor would I be able to change the cover or pick the images for all my covers, especially my handsome heroes. I love having this control over my own books.

My next dilemma here is to change or not to change the cover. With this story now being so different, I think it deserves a new cover. Update: I changed the cover and it was the right decision!

If you’ve read this far, thank you for sticking around. I must be making up for lost time with all these words.

Have any of you published a 2nd edition? If so, what became of the 1st Edition? I don’t think Amazon will let us kill off the first edition if we publish a 2nd edition. In fact, I’m sure they don’t pull a first edition, and the upside to this is to have reviews available, albeit, new reviews will have to be garnered for the 2nd edition. I plan on finding out before I make a decision.

      The entire series to date:

There it is, folks. I laid it on the line, and I’m hoping for the best.

Super Bowl friends, enjoy the game!

See y’all when I see ya. Miss you.  ❤

    • New and Available ~ Heartbreak’s Reward is Released.

      Posted at 3:07 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on September 8, 2014

You’ve seen my cover and read excerpts for months now. I started this book on November 1, 2013 and Jase Carlson has taken me on a ride I’ve enjoyed. Yes, Heartbreak’s Reward is released.

Thanks for standing by my side even though you’re probably tired of seeing my Jase and Brenna standing on a book cover in front of a “damn big mountain.” (Brenna’s words.)

HeartbreaksReward_LRGInstead of writing a post about my new release, I’ll send you right to the source–the book page. I have pages on both my website and here, so since you’re here… You can find links at the top of the page for all my books.

      What’s Next On My Agenda?

      Double Dutch Ranch Series:

      1. Book 1.5: Target date: November 2014.
      2. Book Three: Target date: Spring/Summer 2015.
      3. Book four, and possibly one more book planned in this series. Maybe the 5th one depends on who readers would like to see in number five. I already have an idea. The place in my brain where my muse lives is getting kind of crowded.

      The Bull Rider Series:

      Book #3 Christmas 2015

Whatever else comes up in between. There’s a dramatic romance/women’s fiction novel on the back burner begging to get finished.

For now, here’s the link again to the Heartbreak’s Reward page.

      Having No Sexy ~ @MySexySaturday #Saturday7 #MSSWeek40 #MySexySaturday

      <><><><>

The “theme” this week from the My Sexy Saturday blog hop page: What happens when we’re having no sexy? When our characters are too tired, too ill or just not in the mood. We realized even though we talk about the sexy and doing the sexy and everything sexy, sometimes that just doesn’t enter the picture. Sometimes it is truly about the love between two people when the sexy fails them for some reason. One of the best songs ever to represent this stance has to be from the movie Notting Hill called When You Say Nothing At All. Follow the Link below to visit other participants.

Seven paragraphs from Cowboy Boss and his Destiny

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance, website

This isn’t really a set-up, but sometimes a man has to do what he has to do.

Grabbing his keys from the table, he hurried to his truck, started it and took off down the dirt driveway—turning right onto the first road, onward to U.S. 60. He struggled to keep it at the speed limit. For the second time tonight, he turned down her road but this time he didn’t spin around to go back the other way. Pulling up in front of her townhouse, he revved the engine before turning it off.

Tristan peered into the mirror, took cologne from the console and slapped on a small amount. He plopped his hat on. At her door, he took a deep breath and knocked hard. A light came on inside, and his heart sprinted. She opened the door—messy hair and rubbing her eyes.

“Remember I said I was a man of my word?”

She removed his hat. “Get in here.” She crashed into his arms.

Yeah, just want I needed. He lifted her, and her legs went around his waist, exciting him beyond comprehension. He kicked the door shut and took her lips in an ardent kiss on the way to the bedroom, plopped down on the bed, and lay beside her. “Let me lie with you. That’s all I want right now,” he whispered breathlessly.

“Yes,” she said, snuggling beside him.

He stretched out along side of her, one leg hooked over hers. He tightened his arms around her until he absorbed her warmth, scent, her passion. Tristan closed his eyes, and slept.

      Thank you for reading.

Living the good life in a big city for many years, Nora Trinity ends up a statistic after the magazine she works for makes cutbacks. Despite a family betrayal from her past that still needs mending, she moves back home to the small town of Canyon Junction, Arizona, with forgiveness on her mind. When she is hired by a local rancher to help with his ranching magazine, she finds herself profoundly attracted to him, and the feeling is mutual. The thing is, her sexy boss comes as a package deal, and his little girl is immediately drawn to her. His attractive, new assistant is everything he wants in a woman, including her ginger-red hair. He finds it hard to keep her out of his arms—especially since she doesn’t mind being in his embrace. But from his experience with women lately, he’s learned that some don’t want a ready-made family. This one seems different, and he’s falling hard. • Updated Cover: Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight~ Cowboy Boss and his Destiny

      Posted at 2:05 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on December 7, 2013

Publication has been delayed until Early February 2014.

Last week I mentioned a new book cover would be made for Cowboy Boss and his Destiny. Dawné Dominique finished it the same weekend. I’ve also tweaked the blurb which can be found on the Cowboy Boss and his Destiny page. This isn’t an official cover reveal because I’ve already done that with the first cover, but I do want to show it off. For information on why I’ve changed covers, feel free to go to a previous post where I talked about it. More info about the books in this series is there, too.

More News: The final edits are finished on this book. Expect it to be released in early January 2014. All three books in this series will be published in 2014. I’m excited.

Sensual Contemporary Western Romance ~ Books in the Double Dutch Ranch Series: Love at First Sight are lighter in content—and these books are written in the romance genre without the drama of my books written under my blend of romance/women’s fiction.

Here’s the new cover. The same as the old one, but different. 🙂

I have a couple works in progress I’d like to see published in the coming year, but it’s so much fun writing western romance, that I’m not sure I want to leave it yet, and maybe I never will.

No matter if you’re a writer or not, do you have planned projects for 2014? Maybe I should ask this question on December 31st instead of now. Believe me, I’m not trying to rush this year.

As always, please feel free to follow my blog via email updates or the follow button. Thank you.

Happy holiday shopping. Be careful out there. I’d also like to extend a belated Thanksgiving wish to my fellow  American friends. Enjoy the rest of the weekend, everyone.

      BLURB

Nora Trinity has been gone for many years, living the good life in a big city—far away from the home she couldn’t wait to leave. When she loses her job due to cutbacks, she finds her way back home to Canyon Junction, Arizona, despite a family betrayal in her past that still needs mending. Her funds are running low, and work in this little town isn’t easy to come by. An ad for an assistant at a local ranching magazine draws her attention. When she schedules an appointment with the rancher, she never dreamed a delay on the way to the interview would turn into a coincidental meeting with her destiny—

Tristan Carlson does the best he can to raise his four-year-old daughter on his own.Thankfully, his mother remains on the Double Dutch to lend a hand—giving him the ability to maintain the ranch, tend to his horses, and keep up his small-time ranching magazine. But, when his assistant quits without warning, he needs to replace her in a hurry. Not an easy feat in a small town like Canyon Junction—until he learns how chance meetings can bring unexpected gifts.

Maybe it was love at first sight…maybe fate—the way he tips his hat, or a little girl with big blue eyes. Either way, Nora Trinity finds a life she never expects in her Cowboy Boss and his Destiny.

I’m giving you seven sentences from my current release HOWDY, MA’AM, Book One in the Bull Rider Series. <Book Two coming later in 2013.>

He hired her to travel with him for a season. They both have obstacles to overcome along the way. Staying out of each others arms is only one of them.  Come along and see what happens when classy takes a trip with rowdy.

Set-up: A business lunch, a couple bottles of wine, heated kisses with thoughts of more, but in the end, they returned to separate rooms to think about what could have been…

Caulder dropped to the chaise and sat back, surrounded by the black night, twinkling stars, and a bittersweet moon. It was Velia who came to his mind. Velia with a warm body and lips as soft as butter, with breasts so exquisite he longed to squeeze and lick until she trusted him as a man. But she surely wasn’t interested in another relationship, even though he felt her guard drop when she was in his arms. Somehow he’d work through this. Somehow he’d forget the scent of her beguiling perfume.

      Howdy, Ma’am
