    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: Thanksgiving U.S.A.

      Posted at 3:02 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on November 20, 2018

What can be more inspirational than to share in giving thanks. I might not have a chance later to wish all of you who celebrate the season a happy holiday. So, I’m posting this heartfelt greeting early by saying Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

To those of you in other countries and to those of you who don’t celebrate, I’m thankful to have you here to share not only my “heartfelt” thanks for reading my posts, but to also thank you for your visits, comments, and Reblogs.

Some of you have been with me the entire eleven years of blogging on WordPress. I’m grateful for all of you, and for those of you who may pop in unexpectedly. (not the spammers) Thanks!

Love and appreciate what you have.

May you have warm words on a cool evening, a full moon on a dark night, and a smooth road all the way to your door. ~Irish Toast

#MFRWauthor 52 Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop

Week 27: The Most Beautiful Place I’ve Been

This is the twenty-seventh week. I guess this means we’re on the down-hill spiral now. It’s hard to believe half of 2017 has already gone by, but here we are again with another 52 Week Blog Challenge post. We have a whole half of year to look forward to.

About this week’s topic… Maybe Mt. Shasta isn’t the most beautiful spot I’ve ever been, but it’s up there at the top with:

      The Great Lake State:

      • Viewing a lighthouse at sunset at Ludington State Park.
      • Bluffs over Lake Michigan at Sleeping Bear Dunes.
      • Viewing Lake Superior from the top of a lighthouse in Upper Michigan (Upper Peninsula).
      • Sunrise over Lake Huron in the thumb area of Michigan while making coffee in a van at Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse near Port Hope.

      California:

      • The Golden Gate Bridge.
      • Napa Valley.

      I could choose:

      • Niagara Falls at night from the dining room in the Skylon Tower.
      • Smokey or Allegheny Mountains.
      • Horses and donkeys running free in the desert. (I’ve seen both in Arizona and Nevada.)

In other words, so far in this lifetime, I can’t choose one particular place.

But today I’m choosing a “beautiful” trip and heartfelt memory with my oldest son.

      Mt. Shasta, California.

It’s Thanksgiving weekend. On this visit to California to see my oldest son, we did a couple day trips. The ones I’ll mention today are our trips to Mt. Shasta, the mountain and the city, McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, and Shasta Dam and Lake. On a clear day you can see Mt. Lassen at Lassen Volcanic National Park. We visited Mt. Lassen on my first visit to California.

Mt. Shasta isn’t in view in this image due to the clouds.

The Three Shastas. Lake. Dam. Mountain.

It’s a steady climb all the way up. The temperature was around the mid-sixties when we left, and by time we got there, his temp gage in the truck hit around thirty-two degrees. He wanted to show me the Mt. Shasta Ski Park, but it was closed. We got as far as the gate. I’ve shown you pictures of Mt. Shasta before, but this wall hanging was a Christmas gift from him. My previous (times two moves) apartment wallpaper didn’t look that yucky color in person.

He took the picture from the Oregon side of the mountain. It’s a three-panel canvas and is almost the size of my couch. The time spent with him that long weekend is a favorite memory, and is the reason I shared Mt. Shasta as one of the most beautiful places I’ve been. I can’t wait to see what the other participating authors chose.

    • Gratitude

      Posted at 7:01 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on November 24, 2016

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, my American friends, and a happy weekend to all.

Just a note to say how thankful I am for all of you. Thanks for being here.

I thought this quote was fitting.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. ~Melody Beattie

    • Sharing Time with Family & Friends, or Not: Thanksgiving

      Posted at 1:26 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on November 25, 2015

Times change. Life moves forward. Who gets a bit sentimental during the holidays? I do.

      Thanksgiving

People always ask where I’m going, or they want to know what I’ll be doing for Thanksgiving. Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate their concern. Sometimes I get accused of being a recluse because I don’t have a problem to stay at home and do my job. Write.

It wasn’t always like this when I had my own family. Well, I still have a family, but one boy is across the country. My youngest son is in a serious relationship, and they do this holiday with her family. Yes, they have invited me to join them.

What do you think my advice is to others when I know they’ll be alone?

“Don’t stay home alone. Go and enjoy dinner with friends.”

It’s easy to give advice. Ask my oldest son in California how many years I’ve told him that.

Now, he says it to me. image_thumb.png

I remember the first Thanksgiving dinner when one of my kids wasn’t there. The oldest went to a football game with his best friend (Go Lions!), so it was different with only three of us there instead of four—five if we count my single brother-in-law. That’s when I realized the days of having our family Thanksgiving dinners together were numbered as the kids grew older.

      Allegheny River

Back in those days, my family sometimes went to our cottage in Pennsylvania in the Allegheny National Forest in the Allegheny Mountains. My husband’s entire family would be there at the family cottage across from us. We always had fun.

After my married brother-in-law got divorced, I was the only female so you know what my job was, but truly, I didn’t mind cooking for everyone. At least one brother-in-law would always come for dinner anyway. Luckily, my husband (now ex-husband) knew how to cook, and he’d always lend a hand.

      Times change. Life moves forward.

If you celebrate Thanksgiving, are you spending time with your immediate family this year? Tons of relatives? Friends? Going out? Staying home?

Whatever it is you’ll be doing, please enjoy yourself.

For the record, I am not staying home alone this year.

      Happy Thanksgiving.

      Happy Thanksgiving Wishes

In my country we are celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday, which falls on November 27, 2014 this year.
I’d like to take this time to wish everyone who celebrates, a very Happy Thanksgiving and wonderful holiday weekend.

If you don’t celebrate this holiday, I’d still like to wish you a happy rest of the week and weekend.

Enjoy yourselves in whatever it is you are doing.
      Either way, be safe.

      Mary~

    • Travel Rambling

      Posted at 2:39 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on August 10, 2009

I missed my daily blog for two days. I guess that means I don’t qualify for the badge that says I blogged daily. It made me wonder if I wanted to blog on a daily basis, but I’m starting to get in the habit of it now. So, if I write three today, will that count? I was still writing, in fact, writing a lot, but not here. So, I guess I was blogging daily! I am writing a blog post for another blog about some of my travels. I don’t know if it will be accepted. If not, I will submit it to my other writing site where I can get paid for clicks to the page. It’s not much; only a half a penny per click or something like that. But, it’s fun, and I get comments which help my writing anyway.

Traveling is something I love to do. Last November I traveled by myself to California to spend Thanksgiving with my oldest son. The flight was long, or I should say FLIGHTS. It took three different planes to get there. It made for a tiring day, but I would do it all over again if I had the chance. Traveling alone is both good and bad. The good part is you can do whatever you want, whenever you want while at the airport. If you want to get up and get a cup of coffee or something to eat, you don’t have to ask anyone else where they would like to go. You make the decision, you go. And, you don’t have to sit next to a stranger if you’re not sitting in the middle. On the flipside, one bad part I can think of is going to the bathroom. It’s not like it used to be, in that, you don’t dare leave your baggage anywhere alone. That means if you have your laptop out, you pack it back up, put it away, give up your seat, and go to the bathroom, or wherever it is you’re going. And, no matter where you sit, you’re next to a stranger.

I had my laptop bag on my shoulder, and my wheeled carry-on, plus a purse! Try carrying a cup of coffee, a bottle of water, and a bagel. It’s possible; I did it! Put your purse in your carry-on, or hang it over the handle, stick the water anywhere you can find where it will fit, and put the laptop strap across your chest instead of just on your shoulder. At least it will be secured that way. You don’t want to take the chance of it slipping off your shoulder with a cup of hot coffee in your hand. Other than not having someone to talk to on a long flight, or when you have to wait three hours like it did, I do prefer to travel alone sometimes. I’m yearning for another trip as we speak! I’ll save my trip home for another blog! Now, if we’re talking about car travel… that’s a whole new story, too!
