    • Short Snippet Saturday: Feisty!

      Posted at 11:01 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 26, 2016

Last week y’all met Velia Armano, my heroine from the Bull Rider Series, in a short blog series I named Meet the Heroines. I thought it was time to show a little of the spunk that adds to her personality. Look out, Mr. McCutchen. He might be able to handle a two-thousand pound bull, but I wonder how he’ll handle this feisty photographer. Hey, he was the one who hired her… Live and learn! *wink*

      short snippet saturday2

      Snippet:

He went to the door then right back to her with a deep breath. His hair fell into his eyes but he didn’t seem to care as he usually did. “We have a contract. I’m holding you to it, or I’ll sue for breach.”

“You’d sue me? You’d keep me from helping my cousins’ mental state?”

“Excuses!” He took another deep breath. “If I have to. I need your skills, and you signed a contract.”

“Great. If this is how you want to do it, fine. I’ll hold up my end of the bargain.” She dropped her luggage, and it landed with a thud. She moved closer to him. If ever there could be a hateful glare, she had it. “But you remember I’m continuing on this mission because you leave me no other choice.” Velia moved even closer. Her bravery increased, and she proved it with her index finger as she jabbed it into his chest. “This is only a business deal. And don’t forget it.”

Caulder picked up her bag. “Yes, ma’am.”

      “And stop calling me maa’aaaaamm.”

“Yes, ma’am. I mean, yes, Ms. Armano…ma’am.” He smirked and tried not to smile.

Velia glared right back. Go ahead, I dare you to crack a smile. She seethed as he attempted to hold it in.

Caulder set her bag down and strode to the window. Lifting both hands, he pushed his hair back from his face. “Damn, women drive me nuts sometimes.” He lowered his voice, talking more to himself than to her, “This hot-blooded, Italian spitfire does more than most.”

She grabbed her jacket and slipped her arms into the sleeves. “I do believe this hot-blooded Italian is ready then.” She gathered her purse, laptop, and carry-on bag, and went out the door ahead of him.

      Thank you for reading.

Oh, Howdy, Ma’am just happens to be on sale for a limited time in eBook format. 🙂

dreamstime_s_10837833Most of the time when I do something I do it for a reason. Let’s take this list of camera equipment. It all pertains to photography, which happens to be my hobby. Something I love almost as much as I love writing.

*Since I wrote Howdy, Ma’am and Hey, Cowboy, it’s important that you know my hobby is photography because my new heroine is a photographer. She’s a former travel photographer, settling down in her own business now. I have never been a travel photographer although I have done some traveling and took a lot of pictures.

Traveling and taking pictures doesn’t make me a travel photographer. A while ago I took two photography classes at a local community college. I do know a little bit about taking pictures.

I wanted you to know that as the writer I have some experience with photography which I believe qualifies me to create a character who is a photographer. I would love to trade my film camera body in for a digital SLR because I love the lenses I already have and can’t see giving them up. (UPDATE: I now use the Canon Rebel Digital SLR with my old lenses.) I must admit these 13 items are a lot of weight to carry around. With this being one of the reasons, I’ve since been looking at smaller digital cameras. The last time I took a flight, every piece of my camera equipment was manually checked.

Getting through Detroit Metro Airport was bad enough, but getting through security at a small airport in California to come home was worse. Every piece of my camera equipment was gone over–checked and double checked. So was I! Not to mention, I was the only one on the plane to be pulled aside. Therefore, I was the last one on the plane, a small prop job going to San Francisco. A trip to remember either way. Since I got a little off topic here, I will end this now. 🙂

    • Good Friendships Never Fade (Stream of Consciousness Sunday)

      Posted at 3:58 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on September 4, 2011

One day this week I went to the movies with one of my long time friends, whom I haven’t seen in quite some time. It’s kind of strange how you can remain friends, even without constant communication. The last time I saw her was a year ago, but before that it was probably three or four years. Since I was the one to move away, I wanted to make sure to keep in touch, although this friend and I didn’t remain in contact unless I was in town, and I’d call her so we could get together. I called her when I arrived in town for a visit last week.

We met for dinner one night a few days before the movies, and found out we both wanted to see The Help, so that’s what we went to see. When we used to work together we got along very well and became friends immediately. Maybe we won’t see each other again for quite some time, but I know our friendship will remain strong.  Do you have friends like this where you can make a phone call and pick up where you left off?  I cherish my long time friendships.

This was my 5 minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post. It’s five minutes of your time and a brain dump. Want to try it? Here are the rules…

      • Set a timer and write for 5 minutes only.
      • Write an intro to the post if you want but don’t edit the post. No proofreading or spellchecking. This is writing in the raw.
      • Publish it somewhere. Anywhere. The back door to your blog if you want. But make it accessible.
      • Add the Stream of Consciousness Sunday badge to your post.
      • Link up your post below.
      • Visit your fellow bloggers and show some love.

      Now…

      1. Grab the button

      (it’s over in the sidebar)

      2. Write your post.

I missed my daily blog for two days. I guess that means I don’t qualify for the badge that says I blogged daily. It made me wonder if I wanted to blog on a daily basis, but I’m starting to get in the habit of it now. So, if I write three today, will that count? I was still writing, in fact, writing a lot, but not here. So, I guess I was blogging daily! I am writing a blog post for another blog about some of my travels. I don’t know if it will be accepted. If not, I will submit it to my other writing site where I can get paid for clicks to the page. It’s not much; only a half a penny per click or something like that. But, it’s fun, and I get comments which help my writing anyway.

Traveling is something I love to do. Last November I traveled by myself to California to spend Thanksgiving with my oldest son. The flight was long, or I should say FLIGHTS. It took three different planes to get there. It made for a tiring day, but I would do it all over again if I had the chance. Traveling alone is both good and bad. The good part is you can do whatever you want, whenever you want while at the airport. If you want to get up and get a cup of coffee or something to eat, you don’t have to ask anyone else where they would like to go. You make the decision, you go. And, you don’t have to sit next to a stranger if you’re not sitting in the middle. On the flipside, one bad part I can think of is going to the bathroom. It’s not like it used to be, in that, you don’t dare leave your baggage anywhere alone. That means if you have your laptop out, you pack it back up, put it away, give up your seat, and go to the bathroom, or wherever it is you’re going. And, no matter where you sit, you’re next to a stranger.

I had my laptop bag on my shoulder, and my wheeled carry-on, plus a purse! Try carrying a cup of coffee, a bottle of water, and a bagel. It’s possible; I did it! Put your purse in your carry-on, or hang it over the handle, stick the water anywhere you can find where it will fit, and put the laptop strap across your chest instead of just on your shoulder. At least it will be secured that way. You don’t want to take the chance of it slipping off your shoulder with a cup of hot coffee in your hand. Other than not having someone to talk to on a long flight, or when you have to wait three hours like it did, I do prefer to travel alone sometimes. I’m yearning for another trip as we speak! I’ll save my trip home for another blog! Now, if we’re talking about car travel… that’s a whole new story, too!
