    • What If You’re Alone on Valentine’s Day?

      Posted at 10:20 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 14, 2017

Happy Valentine’s Day, dear blog readers!

      valentines day 4

For twas not into my ear you whispered
      But into my heart
Twas not my lips you kissed
      But my soul
      ~Judy Garland

I put a lot of time into a post I’d written a long time ago, and I still like that post for Valentine’s Day. It’s titled Alone on Valentine’s Day?

Why would a romance writer want to write about being alone on Valentine’s Day? I believe in Happily-Ever-After, Love at First Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romanceSight, and being Swept off my Feet, and I have been, and have experienced, each of these. I continue this in my writing…live for it, in fact.  ❤ Many are alone on Valentine’s day for many different reasons, so why not write about being alone on this day for lovers?

Many of you long time followers have read the post I’m directing you to, but many of you are new, so if you’d like to read my suggestions for being alone on Valentine’s Day, please enjoy at the following link:

      Alone on Valentine’s Day

Many of you have already read the interview I did for Valentine’s Day with the legendary cover model, C.J. Hollenback. If you’re new, you can read it yourself right HERE.

      Author note:

I’m considering asking another cover model for an interview. He’s on an upcoming book. It all depends on his time and my time, so don’t hold me to this. He’s too adorable and friendly not to be introduced. Plus, he was a great inspiration for my Randy in Lassoing the Last Dance. I hope you think so when I do a cover reveal.

      Last but certainly not least:

You have to try this cake by Suzanne at A Pug In The Kitchen Food Blog. Her recipes suzannes-cakesend my brain into a lip-licking tizzy! The photographs of her dishes alone make my mouth water. Image used with permission from Suzanne. And, you’ll see why her blog is called what it is called:

Whatever Tomorrow Brings… Their only choice is acceptance.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romanceEnjoy a surprise excerpt from Dane’s book.

      From Chapter One:

Today, Judy Carlson tried to be strong for her family’s sake, yet her vow not to cry betrayed her. Dane, her youngest, prepared for his fourth extended tour of duty. He’d be gone in a matter of hours. She folded her arms across her chest while standing at the window in her bedroom—the majestic Superstition Mountain looking back at her. Dane headed to the barn after his ride through the desert. As soon as he untacked the horse, he would barge through the back door. Judy listened. Waited. A few moments later the back door slammed as she expected.

Tapping on the bedroom door drew her attention. She inhaled a big breath and blew it out. “Just a minute,” she said, grabbing a tissue to dab at the wetness on her cheeks and tossed it into the wicker trash basket beside her desk.

      “Mom? Can I come in?”

Dane. She summoned up the strength to hold it together. “Come in.”

When he entered, he closed the door behind him. She forced a smile and walked around her queen-sized sleigh bed toward him.

He stuffed his hands into his front pockets and took a minute before making eye contact. “Can we talk?”

“Definitely.” Their eyes met, and for a moment she saw that blond-headed, blue-eyed boy asking for a cookie. She held her arms out and they hugged.

He patted her back while she patted his. “It’ll be okay, Mom. I hate leaving you guys to worry. You know I’ll be home before you realize it.” His voice came out with an unfamiliar cracking.

No, she didn’t. Every day was like a hundred piled into one while he was in combat. “I understand.” She lied. “Have you changed your mind about us coming to the base for the deployment send-off?” Send off? Like hell. Sending him off and not knowing if he’d return? It tore at her heart each time. “We can get plane tickets.” Judy wrinkled her nose at the familiar barn smells of hay and horses, on her son.

Dane stood straight, taking a minute before speaking. He nonchalantly brushed his hair back. “No, not this time.” He took a seat on her bed like he’d done as a teenager who needed answers to some big problem, like what shirt to wear on his first date. His eyes lowered. “It’s not only hard on all of you.”

It had to be hard for him to admit. “I understand.” Judy slipped her arm around his waist when she sat beside him, and leaned her head against his broad shoulder. “Why did you have to sign up again?” Oh, Lord, she shouldn’t be making it more difficult, because the choice wasn’t always his.

Dane sat sideways to face her. With seriousness in his eyes and a tilt to his head, he calmly said, “You know why—this is my job.”

Judy nodded. She knew why all right. Because he had to Ranger up. Well, she’d rather he did giddy-yup out in the Sonoran Desert instead of some desert thousands of miles away. She peered out the window to watch for a moment as the horses galloped in the pasture. An image of peacefulness. “Because this is what you do.”

Thank you for stopping by today.

    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: Reading

      Posted at 9:27 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 16, 2016

      I have a motto:

I believe that In order to be a writer, you have to be a reader…

I know some don’t agree. Maybe I should say “I believe this for myself.” Other writers have always been my inspiration and from a young age, I knew I’d have my name on books.

So what the heck do I read?

I like to read what I write. Contemporary Western Romance. Cowboys. Horses. Bull Riders. Ranchers. This doesn’t mean I won’t read historical fiction. It also doesn’t mean I don’t read other genres. I have historical fiction on my “Want to Read” shelf at Goodreads among other genres.

You should see what I have in my Kindle and iPad. What a variety! I DO read a LOT of books written by Indie Authors. My reading time has been cut short since I’m writing and revising now, but I have made it my goal to fit in time to read. So far this year, it’s working.

❤ As a teen, I read historical romance. Historical? Contemporary? ROMANCE? Yes, I see a pattern—romance. It’s my favorite genre, and why wouldn’t I read what I write? I love happy endings. I also read Nora Roberts, Grisham, Sparks, Patterson, to name a few.

I’ve mentioned in other posts that I started out reading Kathleen E. Woodiwiss and loved:

      • The Flame and the Flower
      • Ashes in the Wind
      • The Wolf and the Dove
      • A Rose in Winter, and many others.

And, Rosemary Rogers. I loved many, but specifically:

      • Sweet Savage Love
      • Wicked Loving Lies
      • The Wildest Heart

Do I have a favorite author? I know, I know, how do you pick one? Well, I can’t pick one, but the author at the top of my list is #1 New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Linda Lael Miller.

When I discovered Linda’s books a lot of years ago, I fell in love. When I discovered what kind of life she had from being an author, I fell in love all over again, and I knew I wanted to do that too. Don’t laugh—of course I’m not even close and never will be, but dreaming is not a crime.

Even though I was born a writer, she was my inspiration to put the pen to paper and write a novel. Well, my first two novels were time-travels, so Woodiwiss and Rogers had something to do with it too. It wasn’t until about 2010 that I started writing western romance, but believe me when I say—western romance happened by accident, but WOW, what a good accident!

Honestly, there are too many others to list today. If they write western romance, they’re probably on my list. 😉

What am I reading at the moment?

      On my Fiction List:

      • Big Sky Summer Book 4 by Linda Lael Miller (Almost finished.)
      • Christmas of the Red Chiefs by Linda Lael Miller
      • Disguised with the Millionaire by Debra Andrews (Every now and then I have to bring more suspense into my life by way of books.) I actually set this one aside to read Book #1, Weekend Wedding Deception. You might remember Debra from a past guest post.

      Non-Fiction:

      • Fried Twinkies, Buckle Bunnies, and Bull Riders by Josh Peter
      • The Second Collection: Thoughts and Other Writings by Robert Brault (This is a book I’ll read again and again.) I recently wrote a blog about quotes and Robert.
      • Master List for Writers, Thesaurus, Plots, Character Traits, Names, and More by Bryn Donovan
      • Numerous other books on the craft of writing.

       Recently Finished Fiction and Non-Fiction:

      • A Paris Christmas by Cynthia Gail
      • Big Sky River Book 3 by Linda Lael Miller (Somehow I read these out of order.)
      • The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide to Character Expressions by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi (This is a book to be used over and over.)

So, there you have it. Reading by way of the writer.

To see my reading list on Goodreads, including my own books, you can click the icon below. Thank you for reading today!

Do you have a favorite author, or are you like me and can’t pick only one? What are you reading now?

Thanks and have a terrific weekend. Stay warm!

    • Greeting Card Overload Equals A Lifetime Of Memories

      Posted at 12:02 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on September 7, 2015

Earlier, I had posted a blog about writing love letters. It reminded me of the greeting cards I’ve saved throughout the years. If I had love letters, trust me, they’d be saved.

As I began cleaning out ‘stuff’ to move, I came across a box with greeting cards I’ve saved over the years. I compiled them all into a box, and wrote a note on the outside to my sons who will one day have to go through that box. (*Maybe) The cards represent the many people who have loved, or cared for me, for one reason or another.

They go back as far as my early adult years—starting with wedding congratulations, high school graduation cards, and college graduation cards. (I graduated as an adult with children.)

Also included are “welcome new baby cards,” homemade/purchased birthday cards, and wedding anniversary cards. Oh, of course I have a multitude of ❤ Valentine’s Day ❤ cards. I have many from my best friend—who is still my best friend. I have funny, sad, and photo cards. Of course, you can’t live a life without sympathy cards involved, too.

This isn’t to say I’ve saved every single card I’ve ever received.

One in particular stands out. A handmade card that came straight from someone I knew in prison. The card is absolutely gorgeous, and was created by an artist who made cards for inmates—an inmate himself.

My goal has always been to make a large collage out of those cards that show me as a wife—an ex-wife once and a widow another time. Therefore, I have step-mom cards from my second marriage. Cards that show me as a mom, aunt, niece, sister, friend, teacher. Many are from people who have passed away.

I told my youngest son if I made them into a collage, he could show it at my funeral instead of making a photo board. Of course, if they do make a photo board, I’d instruct them to add all my book covers. 🙂 That’s a big part of my life so I believe it would be necessary. Do you agree?

Everyone can look at my sexy cowboys and maybe not be sad because I died. I might be off to cowboy Heaven for all I know.

This collage is a visual in my head. It might be on a big poster board, or maybe something sturdier. I’d cut out the reason for the card, be it mom, wife, etc. Then, I’d cut out who the card was from and add it beside the title of the card. I’ve loved creating photo collages for a long time, so this would be easy and fun. After the collage was finished, it could be laminated so it’d last. Depending on how it was made, it could even go into a frame. I know there are sites online where you can do Scrapbooking. Maybe I could also do a collage online instead. It isn’t like I have time to scan all those cards, though.

Why bother? The collage would be more important to me than anyone else, so after I was gone, they could trash it along with the funeral flowers if they chose.

file000695143241My youngest son and his girlfriend recently helped me get my storage tubs and smaller items moved before my movers came for the heavy load. I showed my boy’s girlfriend the box of cards. Her reaction surprised me…

Her grandmother had recently passed away and she told me that she and her family had to go through every card, letter, and pieces of old, saved mail, etc., and trash it all. “No one will want to go through that stuff,” she said. In reality, she’s right because as I said, the cards are more important to me. *Hmm, on some cold winter day, I’ll create the collage for myself. No harm in letting it hang on the wall for a time. If I get sick of looking at it, the Dumpster is right down at the end of my parking lot.

What do you do with Greeting Cards?

      • Do you save all of your greeting cards?
      • Are you choosier about the ones you do save?
      • Do you save them at all?
      • For a long time?
      • A short time?

      Is it just me?

My son says I’m weird. Does this make me “weird”?

It’d be my pleasure to have you follow my blog if anything I’ve said here is of interest to you.

If you’re interested in my novel writing at all, I also have a Mailing List. This mailing list is to be notified of new releases or important book updates. In other words, I don’t bombard your Inbox with newsletters.

    • Alone on Valentine’s Day?

      Posted at 3:28 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 12, 2012

      valentines day 4

This year when I thought about a blog for Valentine’s Day, I decided to gear it toward being alone. For whatever reason it is, I hope you find something here you can enjoy or take away with you. Maybe a special quote, or a pleasant thought.

In the meantime, I’ll still be writing romance and putting a hero and a heroine together with some infamous plot. I still believe in the “swept off your feet” kind of love. And, I believe everyone is entitled to a fairy tale romance at least once in their life.

Forget love – I’d rather fall in chocolate!  ~Attributed to Sandra J. Dykes

You probably wonder why a romance writer would write about singles on such a romantic day. I’ve had my share of special Valentine’s and tons of memories. If you’re alone on this day of romance and lovers, I hope you’re at peace, too.

Pie…it fills the cracks of the heart.  Go away, pain.  ~Kevin James, Mall Cop

      DINNER FOR ONE

Do something simple. How about Pasta with an assortment of stir-fried veggies! dinner for oneToss in some chicken or shrimp and you have everything you need. If you’re watching your weight, this should fit right in your plan. Treat yourself to your favorite wine. Throw in a slice of garlic bread, after all you don’t have to worry about garlic breath when you’re alone.

Don’t want to cook? Think of “Stouffer’s Meals for One” in the freezer section at your grocer’s. Toss up a quick salad and there you go! Men, (or ladies) you can check out Bachelor Meals at The Art of Manliness.

Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity.  ~Voltaire

Valentine’s Day is on Sunday this year. If you want to stay home and watch a movie, toss on your jammies, or grab your Snuggie then check out TV shows you’ve missed on On Demand, Netflix , etc., or a couple of those shows you have stored on your DVR.

      TV

For the girls (or guys), I’m sure you can find a movie channel hosting romantic comedies, my favorite. Or you can go to all the locals like NBC, etc. and watch a TV show. You don’t have to be alone tonight when you can be with your favorite actors. Or, maybe you’re a sports fan like I am–bull riding being at the top of my list.

Guys, (or gals), you might like FX, HBO, Discovery, National Geographic, or the History Channel. I like the History Channel. Or, watch your favorite spectator sport.

The newest Bond movie recently came out. Who can go wrong with Daniel Craig as 007? Ok, so it’s been a while. Just watch it!

For you race fans, Nascar is only weeks away so if you’re sitting at home and a race fan, go ahead and look at the Daytona 500 website to take a look at the speed week schedule. Vroom, vroom! I used to play a free Nascar Fantasy Racing Game. It’s all kinds of fun. Remember, I said free. Check it out at Collective Racing.

Will you be jealous if I tell you I have met many NASCAR, ARCA, and ASA drivers? I really did.

There isn’t a single professional sports season now that doesn’t go on at least a month too long.  Baseball starts in football weather, and football in baseball weather, and basketball overlaps them both.  ~James Reston

Put some popcorn in the air popper or microwave, but first check out the dessert recipe I included a couple paragraphs down. Yum-ilicious

Don’t feel like watching TV? This is a good time to pull out your favorite book or eReader. Hint, hint, I write romance. Yes, men read them. Cuddle up with soothing music, and escape. Or, you can play one of my favorite apps like Angry Birds or Bejeweled. Warning: Highly addictive.

If you want to get out of the house instead of being by yourself tonight:

      • Get a massage; hot stone massages are awesome.
      • Take a walk, but stay away from places where you’re likely to run into couples holding hands and hugging and kissing. Tonight’s not the night you’ll want to see that. Please be safe out alone. If you’re in this freezing weather zone like I am, you might want to light the fireplace instead.
      • Hit Starbucks with your laptop! Go to the bookstore; chances are couples won’t be hanging out, but other singles might. Bundle Up! While you’re there pick up a blank journal and start your first entry tonight. One day you can look back and recall all your memories.
      • If none of the other things appeal to you, take a hot bubble bath, (Yes, you guys, too. You know you love it.) and light some candles. Just relax. Afterward smother your skin in your favorite lotion or oil. All warm and cozy now? Time for dessert.

Anyone can catch your eye, but it takes someone special to catch your heart.  ~Author Unknown

      DESSERT

This sounds so delicious. Of course, you might not want this if you’re all relaxed and dessertready for bed–because of the caffeine, or use decaf. Better yet, just have Kahula and Baileys. Mmm, nodding.

      Mochachino

      1 part Kahlua Mocha
      1 part coffee
      1 part hot chocolate

Or try a champagne based cocktail. Trust me, my Italian heroine would drink this.  Italian Classic Bellini.

In Addition: Interview with the Legendary C.J. Hollenbach

As some of you know, in the past I had interviewed CJ Hollenbach, romance cover model and Fantasy Hunk. His interview still gets hits on my blog, so if you want to read it for yourself, you can click HERE. Trust me, he’s a real down to earth person.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, since today is a day of love, why not love your own person and body. No one knows you as well as you do, so look deep inside and show yourself some love.  image Be healthy and take care of you.

He who trims himself to suit everyone will soon whittle himself away.  ~Raymond Hull

Enjoy your Valentine’s Day no matter what you do.

      Love,

This blog post has been modified more than once from an earlier version.

I would love to hear what you’ll do on this day made for lovers. Me, I might make a special pasta dish with veggies. I’ll probably be writing with music in the background. Or, I will be watching Netflix, but I believe my evening will be like any other evening. You know, leading a hunky cowboy and feisty heroine to the end of their story.
