      #MFRWauthor Week 21: Allergies:

How to endure them without suffering overmuch?

Here we are with week twenty-one of the 52-Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop, and the perfect time to talk about allergies, er, well, if you have seasonal allergies. I wrote about allergies in a previous post similar to this one. Sorry, blog followers and friends for the similar topic, but this one asks us how we endure without suffering overmuch.

With tons of food or products to be allergic to, everyone on this earth must be allergic to something. Me? Seasonal allergies among a few others like *Kapok, a filler in comforters, pillows, and some furniture, for example. Trees, and duck feathers too.

I can control the filler and duck feather allergies by reading labels. Oh, and by staying away from ducks. bada bing

Spring and fall is an awful time for me and out of my control other than to take medication. The other day my maintenance man had to come into my apartment. He sniffled and coughed a lot. I asked if he had pneumonia again because he had it this winter. He said, “No, seasonal allergies.” We both said UGH.  I told him I used a prescription allergy nasal spray, and it worked wonders.

Years ago after allergy tests, I’d get allergy shots, but I didn’t keep them up. For the past three or four years, I’ve endured seasonal allergies by using prescription medication. I see no reason to suffer needlessly when there are medications. This, after suffering most of my life with non-prescription remedies.

However, I have a life-threatening allergy too. It’s an allergy to a contrast dye used for heart tests. Sometimes we don’t know we are allergic until a product is given to us. I thought I had died seconds after the contrast entered my body. I broke out in a rash almost immediately, beginning with intense itching all over my body. Even my tongue and inside my mouth! Try scratching the inside of your mouth with an itchy tongue.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel Blog Post 52 week blog challenge about allergies 2019, heart monitor with a decorative heart in multiple colors, pink,

I remember asking if itching was a side effect. The tech who administered the contrast, said, “No. Why?” I showed her my hands which had become one big red rash. They gave me Benadryl. Then I had an anaphylactic reaction and remember nothing from that point on. I came to, hearing the tech say ‘her blood pressure is up to 40/20.’ UP TO? The good thing is, I didn’t have a heart problem.

Since I went through this experience, I’m afraid to take a new medication. What if I’m home alone and have the same thing happen? Am I going to die from anaphylactic shock? To endure this, I try to have someone with me if I take a new drug, but it’s frightening, and I can’t always have someone with me.

The way I endure the allergy to contrast dye is by NOT using it again. This allergy is in my medical records now and in the Emergency section of my phone.

Does your phone have an Emergency Info section to list medical issues? Mine is under Contacts. My family all know, but can they help when they live thousands of miles away? (Hey, crime writers, there’s an idea for your next plot.)

Will a cop or Emergency Medical Technician look at my phone? Chances are, the first thing they’d want to do in the ER is run heart tests. My best bet is to keep my heart healthy. I don’t know what else they use this contrast for. It isn’t the same as the contrast they use for a CAT Scan because I’ve had them before.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance author, blog post #MFRWauthor Week 1 2019What about you guys and gals? How do you endure allergies without suffering too much?

Blog readers, you can find out how others endure their allergies at this LINK. We might find a new cure, but always check with your doctor before trying anything new.

2019 Week 1: Doing it for Fun, Profit, or Other.

      🎉  Happy New Year!  🎉

Look what’s back in 2019. For the heck of it, I checked the Marketing for Romance Writers 52-Week Blog Challenge page and found the first topic for this year. So, it looks like you have something to read over here on Fridays. These days I need a topic to get me going.

Here’s a look back to the first topics in 2017 and 2018. (In 2017 my first post was the fifth week of the challenge.)

Week One: Doing it for fun, profit, or other. I should make this about writing, huh? My mind went somewhere else for a moment. Ha-Ha.

#AmWriting Time is Money ~ Or Is It Something Else? #MFRWauthor

      Why not all three?

      Fun:

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance author, blog post #MFRWauthor Week 1 2019Writing is fun. When it stops being fun, I’ll quit writing. However, I don’t know if I’ll be able to set it aside if the day comes. Writing calls to me. It would hurt so much if I couldn’t write. I’ve already said in an earlier post, if I don’t see changes in the upcoming year, I will stop publishing, which doesn’t mean I’ll stop writing. Would I continue to nurture what is published? I don’t know.

All the other jobs that go hand-in-hand with writing aren’t fun, anymore.

      Profit:

If you aren’t new here, you know I also write for profit—for survival—to live the Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance author, blog post #MFRWauthor Week 1 2019simple lifestyle I choose to live on my own. Simple in the true sense of the word. Without the book income, well, it’s too scary to think about. Writing for profit is an addition to the fun part.

      Other:

      • For my readers who wait patiently for the next story.
      • Self-satisfaction.
      • Pride.
      • My love of writing. Putting pen to paper or having my fingers on the keyboard soothes my soul.
      • To quiet the voices inside. If I allowed the voices inside to be let loose without writing the ideas down, Lord only knows what might happen. My head might burst.  😱  Would you be willing to take the chance of your head exploding? Not me. This takes me back to the question about writing when it’s no longer “FUN” and the ability to stop or not. How would I fill my time if writing wasn’t a part of my life?
      • I love creating characters and their stories.
      • ❤  I choose to believe in happily-ever-after, but I have considered adding an additional genre later on.

What about you authors reading this post? Have you asked yourself why you write? For fun? For Profit? Other reasons?

Authors taking part in this 2019 52-Week Challenge blog hop have answered the question in the topic this week. Check them out here.

      Thanks for reading!

Note: I’m behind in reading last week’s blogs. I will catch up on this and last week.

      Week 52: Wedding Disaster.

To quote: How time flies when we’re having fun. Isn’t this the truth? We’re coming up on our last week of 2018 and the fifty-second week in Marketing for Romance Writers 52-Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop. #MFRWauthor. How about that! Let’s have a party and hope it doesn’t lead up to a disastrous wedding reception.

This week’s topic doesn’t much apply to me in the true sense of disaster.

My first wedding wasn’t a disaster, but it put a black cloud over our wedding day. Our only guests at the wedding ceremony, besides my close friends, were my family. That’s right. None of my in-laws came to our little church wedding except his oldest brother’s wife. She and I had become good friends in the year and a half prior to our wedding.

My family and friends sat on one side of the church.  The other side remained lonely. The reverend asked if we wanted to wait until his family arrived. I don’t know how my fiancé felt that day without them there, but his stubbornness in this matter distressed me. But hey, he wore cowboy boots to our wedding! How could I be upset with him?  ❤  Ha-Ha. (His were black.)

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance, wedding disaster blog post 52-Week Blog Challenge Post

Backing up here a little, I’ll explain and give a little history. My husband hadn’t invited his mom and dad because they had been on bad terms for a long time—especially with his mother. Without knowing me, she put me in the same category as his ex-wife, which wasn’t good in her eyes. She’d left him and kept the kids hidden from him. His mom didn’t want to see him get hurt again, which I can understand, but she judged me in advance. When I met him, his ex had already been gone two years, and I understand he had gone through hell for a lot of that time. His daughters found him over thirty years later.

His mom’s attitude added to my husband’s animosity toward her, so they didn’t receive an invitation. Before we married, we lived together, and she might’ve come over three times to bitch at him—ignoring me each time as if I wasn’t there. My father-in-law used to sneak over at night and didn’t have any problems getting to know me.

My husband left it up to his brothers to attend our wedding or not. They chose not to. However, his brothers and I had grown close over the time he and I went together prior to our wedding. I understood they didn’t want to get on their mom’s bad side, but it hurt. They did come to the “after party” at our house.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance author, 52-week blog challenge blog post, wedding disaster December 27, 2018

My cake was similar to this two-layer with an additional small top layer.  The lace on the middle layer matches the lace covering my short wedding dress. I remember seeing my dad walking into my house carrying the cake so carefully! Normally, when my dad came to visit, he’d be in and out in a rush, but at our little party, I didn’t think he’d ever leave!

Eventually my mother-in-law came around and things were great between us. She gave me her family recipes. She and my husband had reconciled not long after our wedding. I was pregnant with my second child when she passed away at the young age of fifty-seven. It shook up the whole family, and I’m glad we got to know each other and had enjoyed good years together.

Marketing for Romance Writers 52-Week Blog Challenge

      Week 47: Worth Bragging About

Wow, we’re moving right along in 2018. It’s the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S.A., and today is Black Friday! Is anyone home to read this post? This topic is similar to a topic from last November.  As much as I hate bragging about myself, topics like this force me out of my comfort zone, so I do have a few updates I might be able to boast over a little. Let’s do it!

      Book Related:

Since last November, I’ve published two books in the same series. I talked about these two as WIPs in last years post.

Now, I have two more books started. One of my WIPs is in collaboration with a lot of other authors. Joining this group is something to brag about. You’ll see later when we start talking about this new endeavor.

I started AMS Ads for three books. Yeah, I have to brag after being so terrified to try. (comfort zone)

      Home on the Range:

Oh, I searched for my big girl panties and found them and pulled up my bootstraps, then I got out of the stressful environment I had been living in. I moved to give myself peace of mind. It took a big step in moving to the new place, too, but perseverance and prayers helped. After weighing the pros and cons, I made the final, right decision–that’s my brag.

Due to health issues at the beginning of the year, I went back to walking and gave up eating things that are bad for my condition like red meat, fat, and sugar. It’s funny how easy it becomes once your life is in danger. I’ve lost thirty-two pounds, but I see other improvements besides weight loss. I’m not sure how much it has reversed my diagnosis, yet. Yeah, this is me bragging about my life-style change.

This is my eleventh year of blogging. I’m far from becoming a top-notch blogger, but hey, it’s eleven years of sticking to it.

Of course, like any mom, I am proud of what my kids have accomplished in their lives to date, but this is a brag that goes without saying.  ❤

Thanks for reading. Please check out the other authors in the Blog Hop.

    • #AmWriting Writing Advice That Doesn’t Work For Me

      Posted at 7:05 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on February 23, 2018

It seems like more than eight weeks have gone by in the year. February alone, for me, seems like it’s been at least eight weeks. It’s the shortest month! But we are in the eighth week of the Marketing for Romance Writers 52-Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop. Our #MFRWauthor topic this week is:

      Worst Writing Advice I’ve Gotten.

I modified the topic a little to suit my need.

Week 8: Worst Bad Writing Advice (for me)

Who am I to say this is bad advice?  It’s advice that doesn’t work for me. I’m NOT saying it’s bad advice for others. Or that it’s bad advice at all. We all have to write our own way. My way isn’t your way. My process can’t be compared to your process.

What’s the advice or rule I’m talking about?

      “Don’t edit as you go.”

This process works for other authors and some participants in NaNoWriMo. Me? I have to edit as I go. I have to. It kills me not to go back and rewrite. I can’t tell you how often I rewrite, rewrite, rewrite my beginning. This is how I write. I go back to edit. When I say I edit as I go, it isn’t like I type a paragraph and have to go back to edit it unless the BRAT nudges.

I’ll do this when I’m finished writing for the day or if I need a break to think something through before continuing. Sometimes, I wait until the next day or next writing session. Of course, it takes longer to finish a draft this way, but it makes the revisions much easier.

If I’m away from a manuscript, like a have been with my current WIP while revising one of my other books, I’ll go back to the beginning to reread and rewrite as I get familiar with the story again.

Writing without editing as you go works for many, many authors. There’s nothing wrong with the process, for them. At times I wish I could sit down and write a draft this way, but if I try, I am fighting with myself. There’s a little BRAT sitting on my shoulder poking at me, whispering in my ear that I missed a word back there, or I needed to fix something, and it won’t let up. It’s as simple as:

This process doesn’t work for me.

My bad advice isn’t your bad advice. Do what works for you.

We’re at Week Eight in the Blog Hop. Let’s click HERE to read what other authors have to say.

Thanks for your visit today. Enjoy your weekend.

      We’re back!

MFRW 2018, 52-Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop

      #MFRWauthor

Week 1: Favorite thing I’ve written, and why

The topic doesn’t specify a favorite book, but we’re all writers so should “book” be assumed? How could I choose one of my own when they’re all favorites? Let’s say I did choose a favorite book I’ve written. I’d be Howdy, Ma’am, but I’d choose this book more for the WHY.

However, I’m not choosing a favorite book today.

I took time to reflect on this week’s topic. Way back in time, I’d written a poem when my oldest son graduated from high school. I had been emotional for weeks leading up to the big day, and I shed many tears as I poured my heart into writing the special words chosen for him.

My first child—my little boy had grown up. I won’t post the poem here because it’s personal to my son. When I came across the poem a few months ago, joyful tears fell, now convincing me the poem was a favorite thing I’ve ever written. The title of the poem is “Shining Beam.” The original first line began as:

It was just your first birthday with cake on your face. Since then, time has been running a race…

Instead, I backed up from his first birthday to before he was born. The poem carries on through different stages of his early life and up to his high school graduation.  The title came from the last line in the poem:

Look in the crowd… That shining beam is me.

Of course, when my youngest son graduated, the emotions started all over again. My baby—my second and last child had grown up before my eyes. I wrote him a letter instead of a poem. The letter to him was the second favorite thing I’d ever written. Besides my books, of course.

Why? The poem and letter had meant more to me than it did to them at the time, but as grown men, I hope one day they’ll understand how important it was for me to open my heart to them.

Well, here we all are again. This year I can’t promise to make each week in the blog hop, but I love having a topic or direction to guide a post. Last year I met so many talented authors via Marketing for Romance Writers, in addition to authors I had previously known from the group.

Bloggers, readers, friends, I hope you continue to hang out with me in 2018. Have a blessed year.

    • Week 44 #MFRWauthor 52-Week Blog Hop Challenge

      Posted at 1:00 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on November 3, 2017

This post is late because I wasn’t sure there would be a post today. How could I not continue the roll I’ve been on with so few weeks left? OMG, it almost hurts to say “so few weeks left” in the year. I’m publishing two books this month, and I’m so busy, but no busier than most others at this time of year. So, folks, here I go…

Week 44: A Person Who Inspires Me.

This topic does not have one answer. The world inspires me. Music inspires me. Life inspires me.

You’re asking me for a person who inspires me?

      In Life:

My boys, Chris and Jim, inspire me. They are strong and have faced many obstacles in their lives. They’ve faced hurts and have known happiness. Somehow, they always find their way. They are strong. Both of them are there for me in my time of need–both positive and negative needs. Both of them tell me how proud they are when I publish a book, or when I have come through the crap life has thrown at me. They’re grown men now and face what life throws at them so they understand. I can only hope to be an inspiration to them, as well. They inspire me.

      Copyright: creativembers

      Copyright: creativembers

      In My Writing Life:

Other authors inspire me and always have from as far back as I can remember. I’d look at a book in my hands while I dwelled on the author’s name. I dreamed… I knew. One day I’d have my name on books like they did–as they do. Maybe one day, at least one person can be inspired by me as an author.

      In Friendships:

My friends inspire me. What would life be like if I didn’t have their shoulders to lean on? Their ear to listen? Their smiles and pats on the back? I’ve lost a BEST friend. I do know what it’s like. Fortunately, I have other friends. Patti and Karen are two friends who inspire me. I dedicated one of my books to them.

It’s no surprise that I colored outside of the lines with this post and didn’t stick to a person who inspires me. If I thought about it and wanted to write a longer post, I bet I could come up with more, but for now, this will do because y’all have other authors to visit, if you choose to follow me on this Marketing for Romance Writers 52-Week Challenge Blog Hop.

Marketing for Romance Writers (and many other genres) celebrated its eleventh year birthday this week. Its creator is Kayelle Allen. Many volunteers help to keep the organization running smoothly. Kayelle is an inspiration.

Marketing for Romance Writers 52 Week Challenge Blog Hop. #MFRWauthor

      Week 35.

WOW. Thirty-five weeks have gone by this year? Unbelievable. What have I done with the past thirty-five weeks? Well, for one thing, I’d have to say I’ve been writing about two sexy cowboys. One book went to the editor yesterday while I continue writing the next in the series. Unfortunately, I haven’t been writing here on my blog. I hope you’ll forgive me for being so absent. It’s important for me to do as many posts as I can for #MFRWauthor. Moving on…

Today’s topic is: My Bad Habits.

Do I want to tell the world my bad habits? I guess I’m about to. I might keep a few hidden to remain mysterious.

Mary J McCoy-DresselLet’s start with one: I know I drive my youngest son crazy by doing this, but when he comes over, which isn’t often enough to suit me, I run my mouth like I haven’t talked to anyone in months. I tell him things I’ve already told him. It’s obvious this frustrates him.

I didn’t realize this until a few visits ago when I mentioned how frustrated I am with a neighbor, and that I hope this person moves. I’ve been mentioning this for eleven months now. M’Bad! My son sits up and says, “I can’t wait for her to move, either!” Oops, Mom’s bad habit of repeating things came out again. I apologized and I haven’t done it since.

Bad habit number two: Biting my nails. I do this mostly while stressed. I catch myself doing this while watching bull riding of all things. Huh? I love bull riding, and I get so excited watching it. I stopped biting my nails for a long time, but before I knew it, the bad habit began again.

Here’s number three: I eat too late. It seems from the time I finish dinner, I want to snack the rest of the night. Ugh. Sometimes I snack on Reduced-fat sour cream Pringles or popcorn. I passed up buying Pringles® at my last shopping trip, and I haven’t purchased popcorn in ages, so I’m getting better, but I still look for something before reminding myself I don’t want to SNACK late.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel

Number four: Well, darn, I sit far too long at a time. Since physical therapy began, I’m more aware of how much I sit without getting up. I’m getting better at it now that I am in an exercise routine for my back. I graduated from physical therapy yesterday. My back and sciatica are better but not cured yet. Being pain-free is a good incentive. This is where I’m stopping. You all don’t need to know every bad habit.

Happy Holidays ~ from my home to yours.

      Merry Christmas2

“It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes or bags!… Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! “Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas… perhaps… means a little bit more!”

~Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!  🙂

      Have a spectacular day!
