      Posted at 10:56 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on June 2, 2018

It’s been a while since I’ve hosted Velia Armano from the Bull Rider Series for a Short Snippet Saturday post. This one comes from Howdy, Ma’am.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance, Blog Post Short Snippet Saturday

Set-up: A couple days before this snippet, Velia’s father and two of his men had flown in from Chicago to accompany her to court in Tucson, Arizona. While in court the day before this snippet, her ex had threatened her. Her dad sent one of his, ahem, men home with Velia in case Justin followed her back to where she rented an upstairs apartment from an elderly couple. It also happened to be the first night Velia had invited Caulder to dinner. Caulder had arrived right after a horrific incident to find Velia passed out on the floor. This snippet takes place the next morning.

      Bull Rider Series 1

Revised from the original to avoid spoilers.

Ric and Lidia Armano arrived at the door the next day. Roy promptly followed his boss to the car where they met Nero. They stood talking for some time.

Later, she walked back and forth from her window to the door, debating on going out. Her mother sat on the bed, watching her pace across the room. Velia’s head pain had eased, but her bruises had worsened. When her mom saw them, she cried, and when her dad saw them, he’d probably send for his lawyer to take care of Justin in court…or otherwise.

      Justin.

Why couldn’t he leave well enough alone? What would he have done if Roy hadn’t been here? Would he have hurt Alice and Edward? Would she be alive today?

She wrapped her arms around herself to ward off the chill from the horrible thoughts. Lidia hugged her and Velia cried. Her mother’s familiar, loving arms comforted her, and she let it all out as her mom smoothed her hair and cuddled her like a child.

“Your father will be in soon. You can’t hide from him forever.” She handed Velia a scented lace handkerchief like she’d done when she was small. She inhaled the perfume that spoke madre. Velia wiped her eyes then went to the bathroom to hold a wet washcloth over them and reapplied makeup to the non-swollen eye.

She headed downstairs when Edward let her father inside. Her dad wrapped his arms around her. His eyes misted when he saw the bruises. “He has done this before. I do not understand why you didn’t tell me. You’re a strong woman. Why did you put up with this, Velia?”

Velia wanted to think up a lie, but she had done enough lying while living with Justin.

“Why did you not tell me?”

She whispered, “I know what would’ve happened.”

“Sì, and then…” He pointed to her face. “This would not have happened.”

“I’m sorry.” Velia lowered her voice. “I couldn’t allow something to happen to him.”

“So you sacrificed yourself?” His voice grew louder.

“I suppose. What’s going to happen to Justin now?”

Ric shook his head. “Our lawyer will encourage the prosecutor to ask for time in jail for assault and breaking and entering.”

“But he didn’t break in, padre.”

“Yes, he did. Did he not break in, Roy?” her father asked.

“Yes, sir,” Roy replied. “He nearly broke the door down.”

Velia glanced at Roy. She knew it had to be this way. “He’s a crazy fool. Do you think he’ll get out on bail? I have to leave for my tour with Caulder soon, and I don’t want to worry about Justin following us.”

Ric placed his hand on her shoulder. “I can’t say for sure, but Lauren will do what he can to keep him in jail.”

“If he gets out, I won’t go with Caulder. I’ll be putting him and who knows who else in danger.”

“I understand this, angel, but Justin will never hurt you again.” Ric lowered his voice and embraced her. “You’ll be safe, even if I have to send Roy on tour with you. Si?”

Velia knew if her dad said it, it would be true, but she’d never allow Roy to babysit her on the road. She didn’t want to know what else her dad had planned concerning Justin.

    • #MFRWauthor Blog Hop ~They Keep Calling My Name

      Posted at 1:25 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on June 30, 2017

#MFRWauthor 52 Week Blog Challenge Blog Hop.

I wasn’t in the mood to do this post this week, but I’m trying to keep up with the 52 Week Challenge, though I have missed posting some weeks and I’ll probably miss again. This topic is important to me. WHY I WRITE.

I jotted down a few thoughts during the week, and decided I had a post. I’m still nearly incapacitated from a hip/back injury, but luckily sitting is not too bad, and I’m trying to rest it to see if it improves. It’s been a week with no improvement. Life still has to go on. My dog still has to be fed and be taken out. I’m doing the best I can.

Topic for Week 26: Why I write

This should be easy for me because I’ve been doing it for so long, but I had to sit and really think about it. There are many reasons I write. I’ll list them in no particular order.

I can’t NOT write. That’s right. If I’m not writing, I feel like something is missing. I’ve been like this for as long as I remember, but when I began writing full time, it became a habit I don’t want to break. Maybe I’m obsessed now, but I’m having fun. Yes, writing is fun!  🙂

Stories and characters live in my head. I write to get the stories out of my head. Oher writers understand. If you’re a reader, think of the book you’re reading now—or one you love to read over and over as if you are living it. Are those characters in your mind calling you back to finish the story? Do you picture the setting? Think of what happens next? While you’re busy during the day, do you wish you could get back to it?

Then you finish the book and move on to the next one!  ❤

Well, imagine you are the person who created that story and have lived with that setting and those characters day in and day out, hour after hour, to guide them on their journey for sometimes a year or more. Not to mention these characters don’t sleep much.

This one is an important reason for me—I write for the readers waiting for the next book and for the readers who tell me to keep writing. Believe me, readers, I wish I could write faster for you.

I write because I like to spend time with my characters and the settings I’ve created. It’s true! I miss my characters after I’ve published the book.

Self-satisfaction. Sure, I hire editors, a formatter, and a cover designer, but I get self-satisfaction from having the power over creating a complete book.

I write to survive financially. This is true. Without my book royalties, I wouldn’t be able to survive on my own, and there is no one I have to live with. In fact, my rent will jump thirty dollars in August. Ouch. Good thing I write because I can’t not write.

Thanks for reading another post for the Blog Hop. Jump on over to see why the other authors write. Are there similarities between us? For some reason I can no longer paste the whole list into my blog. Please CLICK HERE. Thanks!

    • #NewRelease ~Western Romance~ Lassoing the Last Dance is Live!

      Posted at 11:23 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on April 27, 2017

It’s been a tough week and even more so as the week goes on, but it’s time to let you all know of a new book release. It’s already been doing well in my categories on Amazon and Amazon UK and not too bad at other retailer sites, so thank you to those of you who purchased early.

A post similar to this appeared in my newsletter.

I’m Proud to Present to you:

      Double Dutch Ranch Series:
      Love at First Sight #4

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western romance, series romance

      About the Book

Savvy horse trainer Randy Drake believed he’d met the woman of his dreams the day Roxanne strolled down to the barn and into his life. When she left town and broke off communication with him well over a year later, he was devastated. Now she’s moved back to Canyon Junction without telling him, proof she’s not interested. But his stubborn heart can’t seem to let go.

Professional dancer Roxanne Connor has a good reason for not letting Randy know she is coming home. Struggling to pick up the pieces of her life, she swears their mutual friends to secrecy about an accident that nearly destroyed her. She chooses to live in a self-appointed exile, if she can ignore the craving for his touch and the memory of his kisses.

But secrets in a small town are never truly safe. When Randy learns the reason Roxanne cold-shouldered him, he’s willing to give their love another try, but someone else is determined to keep them apart. Will their rekindled love be strong enough to withstand the obstacles mounting against them, or will the embers that glowed in their past grow cold under the pressure?

      Sensual Contemporary Western Romance.

    • My Secondary Book Characters Evolve From One Book To The Next In A Series

      Posted at 1:12 pm by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 7, 2017

Last week I didn’t write a Short Snippet Saturday Post. Instead, I’m giving you a little information about my hero and heroine in my next book—Lassoing the Last Dance—Randy Drake and Roxanne Connor. You will also find details about secondary characters in the Double Dutch Ranch and Canyon Junction: Hearts in Love Series.

Readers of the series met these people in previous books. Upcoming hero Randy has been around since book one. So has Roxanne who appeared in Cowboy Boss and his Destiny where she came face to face with Randy and wow did sparks fly.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance, Lassoing the Last Dance

      Our Hero:

Randy Drake started out in a small role as one of Tristan’s ranch hands, but as the series evolved, so did Randy. Readers, you might remember he appeared at Judy’s Thanksgiving dinner in Cowboy Boss and his Destiny. Since I knew he’d have his own book one day, I made sure to mention his name, or to have him make an appearance in each book in the series. He has a non-working ranch bordering the Double Dutch—the Circle D Ranch. Many ranchers around the area depend on him to train their horses. The Carlson’s have a lot of respect for him, and he says, “If I didn’t see my birth certificate, I’d swear I was a Carlson.”

His buddy calls him a horse whisperer. I wouldn’t go that far, but if Zach Bryson wants to brag on him, fine. They’re best friend and former soldiers. You’ll meet Zach in Lassoing the Last Dance, but he has his own book in Finding Kimber, Canyon Junction: Hearts in Love Series #2, the spin off to the Double Dutch Ranch Series. (I hope y’all are reading the new series.)

      Secondary Characters With Big Roles:

mary j mccoy-dressel, western series romanceAnother secondary character in my series is Rob Adams. Rob appears in each and every book, and he has already evolved. He’s a bartender in Canyon Junction, and an MC who does parties, weddings, and proms. What is his future in the series? I’m not sure yet.

Regular series readers love to see how the characters have grown from one book to the next and to find out what is new in their lives, for example: Are there babies? Are they still happy? What’s new in their lives? I like to keep them updated about the heroes and heroines from previous books and also the secondary characters. Sure, this gives away details about previous books, but I realize that readers don’t always read in order. I can’t hold back what needs to be told in the book I’m working on.

In Whispers of Forever, Wade Emory is an important secondary character. His name was first mentioned in Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord as Dane Carlson’s best friend. No one knew he worked for Jake Lawton at the JL Ranch until Whispers of Forever came out. Will Wade get his own book? Shrugging. I can’t tell all my secrets.

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance

Sheriff Leon Thompson is another secondary character who appears in each book. Don’t count on him getting a book of his own. He’s happy doing exactly what he’s doing. Feel free to check out Visit Canyon Junction for a bit more on the town. The page is a work in progress.

And then we have Davy, a ranch hand who gets around to most of the books, if not all of them. Nowadays you won’t find Davy without Chloe, the former teen brat. Anyone remember Lacy, or Beth’s best friend, Lily? I would say they’re minor characters but were necessary in the book they were in. My character profile sheet has grown.

I love when I create a character, or they create themselves, and their personality and character grow in my mind. Sometimes readers contact me to say they want to see so-and-so get their own book. Oh, so much to write and so little time. I want to please y’all, but I can only write so fast. As it is, friends and family yell at me to get off my computer and to get a life. If they only knew the joy I get from writing.

Sometimes Randy calls her Foxy Rox.  😉

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western romance, series romance

      #4

      On to Our Heroine:

Roxanne Conner is Nora Trinity’s best friend. They’ve been friends since childhood, but like Nora, Roxanne moved away from Canyon Junction when she completed high school. Regardless, home is home, and eventually, they both returned. She is first introduced in Cowboy Boss and his Destiny and Nora explains how Roxanne and her dad once helped Nora out of a bad situation. I planned on Roxanne and Randy being a hero and heroine of book four way back in Cowboy Boss and his Destiny.

Book #5 is coming in Spring 2020. Series to date:

    • Short Snippet Saturday: Jerking, Bumping & Grinding

      Posted at 6:51 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on October 1, 2016

I’m reposting this today using my iPad, which means I don’t have my computer. So many things have gone wrong this week, so please enjoy an older Short Snippet.

Welcome to another Short Snippet Saturday Post. I woke up this morning thinking it couldn’t be another Saturday already, so I almost didn’t do a post today. Time flies by too fast sometimes. Am I the only one who thinks so?

About this snippet from Howdy, Ma’am: Velia is having dinner with her landlords, AKA self-appointed grandma and grandpa. She mentions a job offer she had received earlier in the day. (Modified a bit for this post.) By the way, the print version of Howdy, Ma’am is retired for now.

Edward fast forwarded through the recording and stopped at the first picture of Caulder as they introduced him. “That him?”

She gulped and tried not to drool. He was one hot guy for sure. Talk about being the envy of all the women around the circuit, if she took the job. The things she’d see. She pressed her teeth against her bottom lip, not sure how to react when he rode in slow motion mode. No doubt, to her, there was something provocative about the way he moved atop the bull. She licked her lips. He stayed on the bull for eight seconds before the buzzer rang. Eight seconds didn’t bull rider resized w effectsseem like a lot, but with all the jerking, bumping, and grinding, it must’ve seemed like an eternity for the rider. It’s so sexy the way he moves on the bull. Warmth spread over her body, and she liked it. “How much of this do you have recorded?” she asked in almost a daze.

“I got almost the whole season.” He laughed. “I suppose you want to watch it?”

“Of course! If I’m going to photograph this guy I should at least know about bull riding…”

Whew, Velia’s reaction could or could not have been my reaction when I watched my favorite bull rider. 🙂 And maybe or maybe not still is when I see him ride. Update: My fav is retired after many years on the pro circuit. 😒

Bull Rider Series #3 is now available. ❤️

      Have a great weekend.

    • Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse: Quote 3

      Posted at 7:05 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on April 5, 2016

      Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books

Waving! It sure has been a busy week in my world with writing book four in the Double Dutch Ranch Series, getting together images for a new cover, approving a new cover, editing Christmas at Love House before it goes to the editor, putting up a new blog post for my Meet Our Heroines mini blog series, and many other jobs that go along with being an author. Oh, and a pleasant breakfast out with friends who make me leave my laptop home. 🙂

Isn’t it supposed to be spring in my area of the world? It snowed this weekend and the temperatures plummeted to the low 20s F. One of my cousins who lives “Up North” had eight inches of new snow. I had a dusting but more stayed on my car than on the ground. But, I did get a brand new heating/ AC unit in my apartment. Just in time for the cold to come back! Funny how that works.

By the way, while we’re all here, I’ll take this time to say “Thanks” to those of you who voted for Of the Cowboy’s Own Accord in The Romance Reviews Readers’ Choice Awards. Unfortunately, I didn’t receive enough nominations to move to the final round, and it does feel bad when you’re so close. Maybe next year, I tell myself. I probably won’t do it again, ask that is, but if I do, please don’t hold it against me.

So, a little inspiration for the muse sounds like a good idea today because my muse and I need to get a book finished. Let’s get with the program then, right? You’ll find this quote on my About Page. It’s been there forever, and has been posted as far back as my old website. That means I really love it. (And I agree with it, too.)

Maybe your muse will like it too. Enjoy this short but sweet quote.

Perhaps imagination is only intelligence having fun. ~George Scialabba

Thanks for stopping by on my Tuesday Inspiration for the Muse Day. Have a fabulous week.

    • Short Snippet Saturday: Feisty!

      Posted at 11:01 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 26, 2016

Last week y’all met Velia Armano, my heroine from the Bull Rider Series, in a short blog series I named Meet the Heroines. I thought it was time to show a little of the spunk that adds to her personality. Look out, Mr. McCutchen. He might be able to handle a two-thousand pound bull, but I wonder how he’ll handle this feisty photographer. Hey, he was the one who hired her… Live and learn! *wink*

      short snippet saturday2

      Snippet:

He went to the door then right back to her with a deep breath. His hair fell into his eyes but he didn’t seem to care as he usually did. “We have a contract. I’m holding you to it, or I’ll sue for breach.”

“You’d sue me? You’d keep me from helping my cousins’ mental state?”

“Excuses!” He took another deep breath. “If I have to. I need your skills, and you signed a contract.”

“Great. If this is how you want to do it, fine. I’ll hold up my end of the bargain.” She dropped her luggage, and it landed with a thud. She moved closer to him. If ever there could be a hateful glare, she had it. “But you remember I’m continuing on this mission because you leave me no other choice.” Velia moved even closer. Her bravery increased, and she proved it with her index finger as she jabbed it into his chest. “This is only a business deal. And don’t forget it.”

Western Romance, Mary J McCoy-Dressel Books

Caulder picked up her bag. “Yes, ma’am.”

      “And stop calling me maa’aaaaamm.”

“Yes, ma’am. I mean, yes, Ms. Armano…ma’am.” He smirked and tried not to smile.

Velia glared right back. Go ahead, I dare you to crack a smile. She seethed as he attempted to hold it in.

Caulder set her bag down and strode to the window. Lifting both hands, he pushed his hair back from his face. “Damn, women drive me nuts sometimes.” He lowered his voice, talking more to himself than to her, “This hot-blooded, Italian spitfire does more than most.”

She grabbed her jacket and slipped her arms into the sleeves. “I do believe this hot-blooded Italian is ready then.” She gathered her purse, laptop, and carry-on bag, and went out the door ahead of him.

      Thank you for reading.

Oh, Howdy, Ma’am just happens to be on sale for a limited time in eBook format. 🙂

    • Meet the Heroine: Velia

      Posted at 11:15 am by Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, on March 18, 2016

It seems I talk about my heroes more than I do my heroines. Maybe because I write some books with a hero focus POV, and I admit, they’re doggone hot. The heroines make the guys who they are as you see them. I love my heroines like daughters or a best friend.

sunset sky, silhouette of cowgirl sitting, knee up, arm leaning over knee, Mary J McCoy-Dressel, western romance Blog post Meet the Heroine series

I have decided to do a small series featuring my lady stars. 🙂 Part of my tagline reads …And the Proud Women Who Stand by Their Side. Their side? Yes. Those gentleman cowboys have just a touch of bad.

      Howdy, Ma'am, Bull Rider Series

Let’s begin with Velia Armano from the Bull Rider Series. She was my first heroine in the most recent years. She’s a thirty-two year old photographer when the series begins. One day, a bull rider strutted into her shop catching her…and her heart, off guard.

She had been living in a self-appointed exile for the past six months, but those sexy flame-blue eyes drew her in as he said, “Howdy, ma’am…”

I love Velia for her confidence, strength, and determination. She had recently gone through a rough time and no longer takes any “bull” from anyone. This didn’t come easy because she had hurdles to overcome.

I had to ask myself– What kind of heroine would a bull rider want? Caulder wasn’t a one-night-stand kind of guy. Hey, he could use some extra publicity after being away from the circuit for a while! Bingo. In walked Velia, but in this case, in walked the cowboy. A reviewer pictured the character of Velia in a movie played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. I couldn’t agree more.

      Velia has many faces.

      • Former travel photographer. Now, travels the circuit photographing bull riders.
      • She became a business owner in Tucson, Arizona.
      • She’s the only daughter in a close-knit Italian family.
      • A sister to two siblings.
      • She’s a cousin to a younger set of cousins.
      • She’s downright sexy without even trying. When she gets sexy on purpose–

        Image: Romance Novel Covers.

        Yahoo, look out bull rider.

      • If you’re a guest in her home, expect to be catered to and waited on.
      • Cooking is something she’s always done and loves doing it.
      • There is a lot more to Velia, but it’s best I don’t give away too much about her. She wouldn’t like that and she carries a concealed weapon. It runs in the family.

Do any of you have a question for Velia?

See how Velia got her name in this post.

Her feelings were still a little raw, but she granted me an Interview here.

Meet the other heroines at the link for Meet Our Heroines.

I’d love if you followed my blog or signed up for my mailing list. I only send out an occasional newsletter to announce a new release, or news about an important book update.

If you don’t, who will? Sounds easy to see two little words scribbled out on a banner, huh? It is easier to say than to do. For many human beings, trust is only a word. The phrase “Trust Yourself” has a deeper meaning.

      Trust 2

To trust myself? How do I prove trust to myself? If you could see the inside of my mind and body when I prepare to put my written words–a novel–out into the public, those words disappear from my vocabulary…momentarily. Okay, in truth, for many minutes, hours, days… They are replaced with the word Fear.

Mary J McCoy-Dressel, Western Romance, cowboys

In reality, I need to have an inner trust knowing that every day I’m exposed to the public–the world, which is exactly what I’m doing this minute. But, as I said above, if I don’t who will? It doesn’t take much for that trust within myself to waver, but when writing chose me to spill out those ideas my muse throws at me, I force myself to shove fear/panic aside so I can trust myself. Trust yourself. Right. Easier said than done. Trust yourself anyway.

Am I proud of admitting how “fear” can take over sometimes and blur that inner trust? No, of course not, but I’m only human. Am I the only one with that panic button lurking inside when it comes to exposing oneself?

Update: This book is now available. Whispers of Forever: Mending Christmas, Canyon Junction: Hearts in Love Series, Book #1.

New Release, Mary J. McCoy-Dressel, western romance, small town romance, first love. second chancesA Double Dutch Ranch Series Spin Off Novel.

Readers of my Double Dutch Ranch Series know my setting is a fictitious town called Canyon Junction in Arizona, though I’ve mentioned real surrounding towns in my books. Well, doggone! Guess what? Other people live in this town, so why not give them a book?

In previous DD Ranch books, some of these characters have been mentioned briefly as friends of our ranchers–Tristan, Jase, and Dane Carlson. Some townspeople slated for future books will be new.

I love my fictitious little town that sits at the base of the real Superstition Mountains, so needless to say, I can’t part with Canyon Junction and the people who live there.

Here are the series books to date:
